    Icon IDW #125: Pirate Dirigible

    Topic: Pirate Dirigible

Background: Yarr! The title of this weeks' topic is pretty self-explenatory I think. There's no restrictions in terms of time-frame or Fantasty/Sci-fi for this one, either.

A couple of things you might want to think about though is how the pirate's ship is kept in the air and how it actually attacks other airships/castles -punching balloons only means their precious cargo ends up in a big crater on the ground after all. Also, you might want to give your dirigible some personality to fit that of its captain!

For those that are not sure what a dirigible is: Dirigible - Wikipedia

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw Pirate Dirigible!
    2. That's it... now draw!

    Deadline: Saturday, April 24
Rounds are usually closed around noon on Sunday (GMT +2 - Amsterdam time)

Awesome topic! reminds me of the pirate airship from the Studio Ghibli film, Laputa. And a lot of the other Ghibli airships, for that matter.

I'm gonna give this a shot.

The "Czarnian", also known as Shadow of Doom to ground people float the skies of the old lands extorting larger cities for huge ransoms. Refusal to pay leads to a bombardment of the city lasting for days or weeks from safe height. When the citydeffence is taken out an enourmous fortress/aka anchor are lowered filled with pirates to search the ruined city for gold, supplies and to murder survivors. Behind the ship a long rag made out of a thousand defeated cities flags hang to witness of the Czarnians ruthlessness.

The upper "ballon" part also works as a launching pad for smaller gliders and ballons to encounter similiar pirate armadas or the Emperial Airship Patrol.

Gona try and add an armada of smaller vessels to give it some scale, its supposed to be huge (notice the ordinary sized cannon windows besides the three large ones). Some perspective issues to sort out aswell.

Ragnj: Great entry! Dig your style and creativity - very playful. I would increase the size of the top element (I assume it's where the gas is, to make the ship fly). The size is too close to the bottom part (the ship). But you probably are already aware of this. Cool piece in any case.

Thanks dragon4lunch, I have inscreased it some since that scan but its still pretty small, running out of paper (damn traditional) tho so might do the top part digitally, or I just go with the look a smaller top part creates, might be magic warm air in there!

I love the idea of the Dirigible body in the center of the "ship".
I think it is pretty awesome looking, and maybe even practical as far as defense from attack goes.

    AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

the shell of the collossal ubermantium beetle, lightweight and cannon proof, combined with the supertough swim bladder of the enormous gourdwhal makes an impressive combination, pirate ingenuity at its finest, furnace engines provide the heat and propulsion and fuelled by anything that will burn, wood, coal, people......

    double dirigible

Here's my sketch so far, still need to add more weapons and some smaller propellers. Going to have harpoons as the main weapons so they can shoot and reel-in their victims.

j.k.dillenger: i really like the fact that u used a creature shell as the thing that makes it float!

SoloDolo: one crit would be that you could make it look more pirate-ish, right now it doesn't look really dangerous

Ok, i just picked one of the thumbnails and went with it, this is where im at right now:

Thanks for your advice. This is my final version, I'm happy with that, although it still lacks something and as I'm braindead right now, I couldn't come up with something better

Have to go out of town tomorrow so this isn't likely getting finished before the deadline, but I'll see what I can do tonight...

I blame Starcraft II beta >_<

edit: This is as far as I can take this piece before having to sleep and get ready for the flight, so I guess this is final. Had fun painting this. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished entries!
