Wow, your pencil renderings are really fantastic! The horned fella is looking really good, got nothing to critique on there. But on the warhammer dudes, the anatomy is a bit wonky. You seem to make the legs a bit short and not thick enough considering they're wearing armour-plating.

And keep those female figure studies up!

I was starting to wonder if you were still posting! You might want to check the SB link in your signature, it ain't working right.
Nice start to the new SB, the figure drawings are looking good. Keep up the anatomy studies and everything will start coming together.
I also think you could re-visit the colour scheme on the cultists, you can do better than that.

Reply time! Thanks to all for bombing my new sketchbook. And apologies for the lack of drawings in this post; I've been academic today (books without pictures).

shumizu - Thanks. I will indeed keep going!

    r y a n o i r - Haha, thanks Ryan. Remember though, not all things can be taught.

LORD M - Thanks for the kind words! As for the Chaos Cultists, all anatomical tinkering was conscious. I made their legs slightly shorter in an attempt to make them appear squat. I also increased the breadth of their shoulders... think human anatomy crossed with a gorilla. If you're familiar with the background of Warhammer 40'000, then you'll know why I tinkered!

Ivan Turcin - Thanks. Keeping an eye on anatomy is an obvious must!

    Raffix - Thanks!

AlstonInk - Haha, yeah man, it's been a while since I was last active on here; I even received an automated email asking me to come back! Thanks for the heads-up on the sig, it's all fixed now. As for anatomy, yep, it's a given, especially around here where it's part of the creed The cultists though, or the one with colour... I don't understand what's wrong...

Okay, so I felt kind of bad making a post without any new pics, so I aimlessly slapped this one together. It's a "copper golem"

I'm not saying anything's wrong. It might just come down to personal preference but I thought the colours in the first pic in post #2 detracted from the piece as a whole. I thought they were bland and a little muddy, making the image hard to read.
I think you've got a very unique and decisive rendering style with the pencils and I wouldn't mind seeing that part of you somehow translated into the way you apply colour

AlstonInk - Ah, now I see. A tad muddy it is, but that's the way I wanted it. That particular cultist, as a character in the WH40k universe, is a typical foot slogger type in an army of millions, serving the extra-galactic Chaos god of pestilence, Nurgle (quite evil). The reasoning behind it was that he spends his life in the trenches. It’s only a sketch too! Anyway, thanks for the compliments on my rendering style! It’s not fantastic in my eyes and I’ve tried translating it across to the painting side of things a few times but I’m yet to make it look half-decent.

    And here's my next wip...

    Icedearth15876 + Loathsome + r y a n o i r - Collective thanks

Today's update includes a detail shot of the now old WiP of my hobgoblin character as well as a totally new beginning of the pic.

In short, after spending an hour or two on the previous incarnation of the hobgoblin, I was (still) pissed off that I could not get my painting to the next level. So, I spent most of the weekend hunting, downloading and reading the various resources needed to pack my head with new knowledge. The result is an entirely new approach as can be seen in the new hobgoblin. There are still some parts of the old pic that I want to bring across though, but haven't yet, such as his facial expression. Design-wise, I'm also still working things out.

Erudite, constructive critiques very much appreciated

    Hey there!
Thanks for helping me out with my illustration, your comment really helped!
Really good start of your 3rd sketchbook,I love your rendering style!
One crit:in your hobgoblin concept, the first sketch(the blue one)had a much more dramatic lightning, and it looked much better that way IMO.
Real nice work so far, keep it up!

Dsmith – No worries man! And thanks for the crit; I wholeheartedly agree!

    HolyMane – Thanks!

    Update is… no update.

However, I did get two new art books in the mail recently: Out of the Forests: The Art of Paul Bonner and Henry Yan’s Figure Drawing: Techniques and Tips. I highly recommend them both!

Paul Bonner, for those of you who don’t know of him yet, is a fucking amazing artist who creates more than just eye candy. You can tell this guy injects real, actual love into his work, and as a result it is distinctly his own. I think the main thing about his work is the story, drama and emotion he creates his works to be, or simply the life present in his work. I feel, especially after looking at Bonner’s work at length, that this life is lacking in a lot of the stuff produced today. For example, everyone seems to only bother mastering the expressionless face, the typical comic book guy shouting face and a couple of others and sod all else. All technique, no soul. Bonner however, can tell you a story in a single picture. He can show the dour look of a dwarf resigned to his fate as he stands prepared to die by the claws of a horrifying demon so that his companions can escape to safety! You can look at his work for hours. So buy his book! It’s not expensive either; about the same price, shipping and all, as one of those crappy ImagineFX magazines.

Henry Yan’s book is great, packed with sumptuously realized drawings and yet comparatively minimal instruction… he is that concise, that erudite, that he doesn’t need to say much. He’s going to make my figures look a whole lot better. Buy his book too.

To finish off, there’s a new book by James Gurney, master creator ninja of the luscious Dinotopia books, out this November for those who don't know yet called Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter, which should be great for all. And I will be out of action in the coming weeks doing a royal pile of academic assignments for Uni… anyone know how the effect of resilient Hellenistic notions affected the outcome of first century Gnositcism? Haha

    And below… tempted?

I'm loving the render/detail on the cultist breast and stomach armour, also the helmet/face mask. You've really stepped it up a notch, great work man.
Now all you have to do is give the hobgoblin the same treatment.
