    Trevor Stephen's Sketchbook

    Hi everyone.
My name is Trevor I am an artist working from the UK. I have been working in 3d for the past decade but this year decided to turn away from pushing polys and get back to drawing and painting which is where I began.
I would like to start my sketchbook with a few older pieces by way of introduction with the last three being from this year.

Very nicely drawn and illustrated dragons, and you're creatures kick ass. As far as critiques go, I'd say maybe focus a bit more on values. Keep it up.

Hi Trevor, very nice start to a sketchbook, the dragons are really cool. Also really like the frog study and a very cute daughter. Nice speedpaints, can you describe the new techniques you are trying?

    Thankyou jskotte.

To answer your question about technique I am basicly creating random shapes with custom brushes and multiple layers, then going in and picking out shapes and compositions from the chaos.

I worked on my previous sketch a little more.

A new character. The first is a charcoal sketch, I saw something I liked so I took a photo and brought it into photoshop to work on.

    Awsome for sure...

These are awsome pieces Trevor, not much usually catches my interests as much as these did, and after having seen them, it really opens the door to a lot of possibilities, especially with fantasy work. Thanks alot... I'll be looking for any new work you post to help my own model pieces I'm working on.

Graphite rendering of a creature concept. A work in progress which I plan to continue in photoshop.

A couple of new character concepts.
First is a photoshop painting, the second is a Lightwave, zbrush, photoshop workflow.

You have some nice dragons there! However, I feel that your paintings are a bit stiff. I love the first spaceship speedpaint (post #6) because it has a looseness in that is missing from the rest.

Hey, I like your sketchbook. My only contribution is a mini critique. I notice that you obviously paint better in color than I do, and I generally like your choice of colors you use.

I won't comment so much on the older paintings, but the newest one could improve with better lighting. The bright highlights on their helmets tell my eyes the harshest lights come from the top left of the image. However, alot of their chainmail and cloth is showing some strangely high amount of reflected light from somewhere else in the scene. Its really diffuse too, so the entire surface is evenly lit and flat. Theres also alot of missing dark halftone in the image and the cast shadow at the feet could be alot darker.

This is my first criticism of somebody's wip. I apologize if i've overstepped myself in this post. Otherwise, I like your work. Please keep it up!

Thankyou for your comments everyone, very much appreciated.

I have taken on a big project just today which will keep me in work untill the end of this year. Unfortunaltley I will be working under nda so I won't be able to post work on that, and probably won't have much time to work my own projects. But I will post when I can.

This is just a study I very much enjoyed doing, because I love the subject matter so much
Good luck with all your ventures.

    Heavy work-load

Awsome work still, but whatever you do, try not to let excessive tasks withdraw you from the "moment" of each creation. Pace yourself when things need to be completed, and of course, continue to put your heart into each piece. I know that everyone's a critic, however, I try not to judge regardless. I'll be looking for your return, and some new artwork...

P.S. - Congrats on the 6-month contract... that in itself is alot more then I could ever hope for.
