The Kansas City POD Sign-in and Hang-out Thread

We are making a thread so those of you who are comfortable sharing which PODs you are attending can get to know one another better. This is your hang-out. Check in, talk with John English, Brent Watkinson or Trey Bryan and just say hello to each other.

This is not mandatory...just a way for those of you who want a Kansas City info area to connect. Also a way for non-POD folks to get to know the students who are in the PODs. Looking forward to it!

In KC, the pod will be located in the Bottoms, Kansas City's old part of town!
huge brick buildings, badass spaces especially for comic work of urban based pictures. As Francis calls it, the Downs. Ha ha

    KC Pod!

If you are interested in a Illustration or Painting major or just want to really focus on foundations, the KC Pod will be a great place to focus. Myself, Brent Watkinson, Trey Bryan, Mark English and Jane Radstrom will all be involved. Drawing the figure will be awesome!

Here are a few shots of part of our space (less equipment), the other half is still being finished (next few weeks). There are two restrooms, oversized sink, lounge area with fridge and microwave. The building is in the West Bottoms which is an old industrial area with the lowest crime rate in the city. This is a perfect spot for a studio, it offers great space and a lot of visual stimulus.

    Hey John,

    It looks great.

I actually have a question. Will the pod students have a dedicated workspace that is reserved. The reason I ask is because I need to know if I have to budget a workspace into my apartment, or whether I can skip having a workspace in my apartment because I have one in the studio.

Also, will we have 24hr access? or will the studio have hours of operation?

    John,

The only thing better than the space that you've found in Kansas City is the team that you are assembling there. Kansas City is the original home of the Illustration Academy, and everything that has happened with the Illustration Academy, and The Art Department can be traced back to its inception there. It's good to know that The Academy and The Art Department is heading home.

Trey and Jane are both pure inspiration, as well. Looking forward to visiting you all in April.

    Pods!

    Evan-

    Thanks for the questions!

The students attending the Pods will have their own studio space and 24 hour access to the Pods. The Pods will have proper lighting, wireless and print capabilities. Each student will have a drawing table, chair and taboret They will also have optional equipment such as drawing horses and easels to work in different mediums.

We do not want anyone working outside of the studio, true immersion is what we are after. Hopefully students can find very basic apartments with other Pod students. These threads were started to introduce the Pods, faculty and students. I hope they will also introduce the students to other students and help facilitate apartment and roommate searches.

Thanks for the interest and questions!

    John

    Great Choice!

    Brinkman-

Glad to have you join us, I assure you that you are about to receive the best education concerning illustration and picture-making that exists!

I will gather some information concerning apartments this coming week. I already have someone looking into this for me, so it should not take long.

    Can't wait!

    Your correct!

    Brinkman-

Yes, there will be all types of opportunity for students to spend time with the visiting artist. I have been really focused on getting details complete for this summer (TIA and TAD) and I can't wait to get into the studio with the students.

    Looking forward to the kick-off!

    Kansas?

Kansas? Wizard of Oz? There's No place like home? Is that the theme?
Is the TAD all traditional school lecture school? Are there digital lecture class

Can somebody post or PM me the street address of the POD studio? I'm doing a whirlwind apartment tour of KC tomorrow and would love to scope out the building/neighborhood. I know it's in the West Bottoms and I'm pretty sure I found a craigslist posting for the same building... is it the one on 12th between Hickory and Mulberry?

I wish I had time meet some of you KC people early, but I'm driving there and back to Minneapolis in one day! (I'm nuts, I know.)

The very first pod student to arrive!

I had to show this photo of Brinkman in front of the KC Pod (1212 West 8th Street in Kansas City, MO 64101).

He is just a couple of months early!

    Kudos Brinkman!

anyone searching for housing in KC for the summer Illustration academy? I know the academy has housing set up through rockhurst college...and it's a very fair deal...though I'm looking to free up as much cash as possible for some art supplies. So far It looks like I may be staying at the extended stay america right next to the airport (about 600 for the month). If anyone is interested in splitting a room just let me know.Only downside , its about 1 hour by bus 22mins by car. For those of you who need a bus pass for the month be sure and purchase them now as they will need to physically mail it to you...here's a link http://www.kcata.org/

Oh and the bus pass is around 50 bucks for the month.

I wanted to drop in and say hi to everyone that is attending the Kansas City POD. Looking forward to meeting everyone in person soon.
The Art Department's instructors list is absolutely amazing and I can not wait to learn from everyone online and at the workshops. John, Mark, Brent and Trey I am very excited to start learning with such a great set of professionals in Kansas City.

I am working very hard to claim my POD spot this coming January. I Hope to see you all soon!
