    Icon IDW #120: Goggles!

    Topic: Goggles!

Background: Uhm...not much background needed here I think. The topic this week is a little more open: goggles!

Feel free to attach hats, helmets or masks to it if you want but make sure you emphasize the goggle part in this round!

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw a pair of goggles!
    2. That's it... now draw!

    Deadline: Wednesday, March 10

Initial idea. I feel that the cyclops species have had a raw deal in modern times, they never made the leap to sci-fi and rarely appear in fantasy anymore. So ive decided to take the matter into my own hands. I was thinking that a fantasy/steampunk look would be better, but felt like doing something different. Like cyclops covert ops night vision goggles . Technically its a goggle as supposed to a pair of goggles.

Obviously still a WIP, but would like to know what people think of the idea.

That's a cool idea man; looking good so far. I'm still thinking about my concept but I'll probably stay away from high-tech stuff this time

Just a question:goggles are like safety glasses, nvg, etc, so I suppose ordinary glasses do not fit the topic, right ?

Kosta: I think ordinary glasses might be a little too far from the brief yeh, though if you manage to combine that with something that's actually a bit uhm, goggly, I will allow it

UPDATE - changed the shape, whatever I did with the round goggles it kept reminding me of that guy that wears the fake eye in the harry potter movies. Also tried to make it darker and textured, to make it more covert-ish looking. Im also quite happy with how my shading and texturing have come out in this one. definately alot more like what was in my head compared to last weeks effort.

Of course, I welcome all comments, good or bad

P.S I wanna see more WIP from other people!

I've been having trouble finding inspiration ... I was going for a steampunk style but it' hard to come up with something original because there is already so much 'steampunk goggles' stuff around. I have a pencil sketch of some military ballistic goggles that maybe I'll try to develop.

By the way, good job Danbot386; I'll post something when I decide what to do

Maybe try something biomechanical/gieger style? Or maybe go along the lines of a steampunk VR headset?

ScribbleHEAD, I was looking at your blog and your work is really impressive man (that Nomad truck is awesome). Do you use the 'kemp remillard's technique' to make such beautiful detailed vehicles ?

    reference

Here's some internet reference for those who don't feel like googling goggles.

Not sure if I'll do anything for this one, but goggles using organic materials could be fun -- wooden goggles, leather, animal bones etc...

I tend to yea, if its technical i do use sketchup to model the rough design after i choose a thumbnail to go with...but i don't know if my work flow is exactly like his...but the basic premise is the same.

Hehe and thanks for the kind comments much appreciated!

Ive tried using blender and 3DS, but its not easy to self teach on those programs. Though tbh, I havnt really tried that hard to learn them. But I did manage to create a truck tire with treads on blender, only problem was it took me best part of 2 days to finish! Havnt tried sketchup yet, is it easier to use?

P.S sorry for taking the thread off topic

P.P.S could someone try the link in my sig and tell me if its working ok? I get a message about file sizes being too big, but it still displays. Just want to know if other people can see whats on there.

Goggles, goggles .... nothing good comes to my mind. Tried a military helmet+goggles+mask thing yesterday but it turned out like an hellgast soldier ...

Danbot386, I've never tried blender but sketchup is quite easy to use. Your site seems to be working right, at least I can see your Junk Golem there

Thanks dude, Ive got 6 pics up on there and they all display but 3 of them give me a admin error or something.

Anyway, I think the problem that people are having with this project is that is it very open. Its a good way to get lots of different results, but its easy to stumble without a solid genre to stick to or expected result. Best thing I can suggest is to sorta write youre own brief while still sticking to this one. And maybe stick slightly to youre comfort zone a little. This one does seem to require alot of youre own initiative to get started.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to do a final, but I'd thought I'd just pop a bit of a sketchie in here. It's great to see some new(er) faces in here.

I'm here since 2006 but never had the balls to post. Now that I found these IDW's I'm determined to join in the fun. I'm just a hobby artist so please forgive my amateurishnes.

These are some of the ideas I had, i think i'll go with the more steampunk/modernish look.

I give you the man-periscope! haha.

i am not entirely sure if this qualifies as goggles, but here is my take on it. near future, more of just a hodge podge together of current stuff. hopefully i can get some color on it and prep for the vote-

    crits welcome.

John McKenna: keep pushing those forms my friend.

Pixie trick don't worry about getting to the finals , just have fun and put out the best you can.

    Kylexitron. got some interesting shapes.

hodoca got some cool thumbs there

Joe dodgeon that's one hell of a goggle.

CarlosNCT wow really really nice, makes me wanna make sure I bring my A game. but my designs seems moer on the spy ware, assasin than your with reminds me of one of the first principles I learned 5 years ago when I was studying industrial design. Form follows function. there is nothing your googles can't do is there.

Lord Venom I like your thumbs.

Abediah I like the cut of you jip.

here are my thumbs. Decided to post them
was thinkg military but then though I'd rather go more spy/ ninja assassin see your enemy approaching from anywhee sensors that track eyeball movent and the whole chip in brain to enable mental control of all camera's thing. note camer'a are shamall hemispheres and are all over teh bands aswell. sort of dragonflt vision. you'll see moe in the final design presentation.. googles with virtually 360 degrees of vision. working on layout board and final renderings, wanna present this more old fashion design way and make it a definate addition to my folio. So let's see where it goes
