Hey Andy those barriers look good, especially the textures. I'm a bit of a 3D modeling fan, did a bit of 3DS Max myself once so it will be great to see where you go with this.

It's pretty criminal that i never posted anything in this thread, so let me correct that. I've been coming here a while and i have to say i've been enjoying things so far. Not much to crit really, your pencils and digitals all look pretty solid. Show some more finished stuff please!

Walnut Feels good man, my thread starts to feel a little more complete with people like you complementing me. Love your work and thanks for the encouragement... does painted characters count as finished... read on.

Kostas Thanks bro, the blogs still got some tweaking to do but its coming along nicely. Cheers!

Marian Yes me too, I was very surprised at how nicely you can get things to come out with a little bit of rendering and textures. Was cool and VERY gratifying. Hopefully Ill be doing some more of it soon, finally after about 8 years of me thinking about doing it, touching it gently then never coming back.

Im gonna copy this from my blog because Im lazy.
tldr; Im working on a little indy game.

"I cant remember why, but a little while ago I heard about a project about these guys making an open world zombie game full of RPGness, inventories, crafting and barricading and whatnot. They were looking for the usual suspects, one of them being concept guys. So here I am. I think were being pretty open about the whole design process so I guess Ill be able to post up a lot of the work.

Anyways, they are looking for potentially more concept guys, but more importantly modelers, animators, texture guys and environment dudes. So if that is you, got to the website!
So far its been fun and they are some cool dudes, so we'll see how this turns out."

But seriously. if anyone wants something cool to work on. And are VERY passionate and dedicated to doing it. Then PM me.
The website is basically empty, but thats cus its only just beginning!

    Oh and the pictures:
    Early stuff that Im just messing around with. Nothing indicative of anything really;

Mactire Thats actually much of the main concept for it. Only normal people getting turned into zombies. So all the usual city people are gonna be zombies. Hopefully it should be interesting. Thanks as always too

Some more bits and pieces. Ive been busy with 2 freelance projects at the moment. So not much time for sketching but I have been doing it. Lots of faces and stuff (I STILL SUCK AT THEM) - so because there was about 6 pages worth of bad stuff - this is a collection of the nicer things.
Hopefully gonna get into doing a page a day of sketches, and scan em in - Im at home atm though, so no Photoshop, which Im dying to use atm. I have lots of ideas I want to try out.

The first of the latest is very nice - beautiful shapes.

& I could probably help out with one piece or so depending on what you need - probably not this week though (if I want to do the ChoW anyway).

I love this last sketch andy - great style there and some of your influences come together nicely. I've been crap lately for posting on CA (down to a snail's pace) but good to be able to stop here and get some inspiration

Dan and Tom, thanks as always.

As long you can tell I'm at a snails pace too. But thats because my freelance is going good! I have a regular project to work on each day so I do that and I sort of forget about doing some more painting/drawing.

But I want that to change, really gotta keep up my personal stuff. So I did this one tonight. I'm experimenting with using line a little bit in my work. Its OK, but I'm guessing I'd like the lines to be much more integrated so, I'm gonna paint it thoroughly with lines and see how I like it. Oh and then some other shitty bits and pieces after the painting.

quite liking the inclusion of lines in this last paint andy - it does give it a nice solid feel. No crits as I know its a bit of an exploration in style, so looking forward to seeing where it goes

That's one cute orc, but there's strange things going on with his ankles. And i'm not sure about the wrists. For the record, i don't think you suck at faces at all. Nice to hear you're getting gigs, keep working hard!

Walnut - Thanks man! Ankles maybe a bit better? And wrists I kinda did on purpose, I like the big chunky, wide at bottom arms. Looks OK I think? cheers.

Snobby - Go draw then! Dont be like me and doing something easier and lazy. Like games. DRAW!!!

Finally doing work that I feel could go in my Portfolio.
I really wanna pick up the pace of doing personal work that really rounds out my portfolio. Hopefully the first of many.

nice character andy - nothing to crit really, other than (for the sake of consistency) he has a different number (5 and 4) of plates below his shoulder pads. I know its not a major thing, but I thought I'd let you know in case you hadn't yet

Looks very nice now - are those markers? Still not entirely sold on the ankles, they don't stick out that far with the legs in that angle. I did this really meddling paintover to show you what i mean (It's real detail crit though):

Nicky Awesome! Thank you very much.
Ariel Yeh it might look quite nice big. Id have to add some more detail into it though, would be very white!
Tom Its wierd, I dont think I ever would of noticed that ever. But now I feel like I should have. Fuck! Will be changing that for my portfolio.
Walnut Same to you bro, thanks very much for those little changes. Looks much better, will change em for my portfolio. Thanks as always too.

And some little stuff I managed to squeeze out.... well actually I squeezed out my real work so I could do this. But I feel like I learned a chunk. I'm feeling that a strong composition goes hand in hand with lighting, and many of pieces dont have strong lighting so I need to work on that.

Some of these are OK, some suck. I might work up the good ones. Or look at why they work and try doing some more that are good. I got the feeling I didnt spend enough time thinking about the lighting. I just starting doing it and then the mistakes came rolling in.

    hey man!
i' haven't written here in a bit but i always check out your updates.Kudos on getting a proper blog/site up and running, and on the freelance work! Really curious to see what kind of stuff you're working on!

Really really enjoyed those vehicle studies (tank/plane etc) studies in the previous page, neat and clean as usual and they look really useful. The zombie work is looking pretty cool too!
The blue horned dude thing look good but i think its a bit weaker than some other of your character work.
I personally think when trying to do a character design piece, unless you're going for costume design (in that case showing lots of different options for the same "concept" clothes/armor is the best thing) its always better to work on the "character" as well as his costume/armor/gadgets.Any kind of pose, even static but that shows some/any kind of attitude that defines the personality of the character automatically makes it a stronger example of what you can do character design-wise, istead of just showing you can paint/design armor. Not that i manage to do that frequently, but since you called it a portfolio piece i thought i'd share my 2 cents.

Really nice work on those small enviro thumbs, i personally dig the lighting and composition, would be cool to see how you progress on those!

    keep up the great work!

    Aveh Thanks buddy
    Nickey Thanks too!

Gnoll - sup bro! Yeh freelance is good, not tonnes. But I have one consistant project which is fun. Hopefull ill have a tonne of stuff to show within the next few months when its gets a proper release. Its all Alpha/beta stage stuff atm.

Yeh this is a fucking good crit. Its one of those things, I thought about a little bit, and was like 'maybe' Ill do that. But now I didnt.. I look dumb as hell! Im thinking I might redraw the character in a new pose or something like suggestion. Maybe a full illustration of him or something. It was meant to be a portfolio piece, but like you mentioned, I wasnt really thinking enough about what they means.
Thanks though, dude. I appreciate frank advice like this a lot. I was being dumb not to think about it from the beginning. Thanks.

That shitty mech I did a while ago - I've been slowly turning it into a painting. But I feel like im flogging a dead horse now. The mech is super boring/generic, and I just never settled on an atmosphere/colour scheme. NEED TO ENGAGE BRAIN MORE.
I really wanna start my 'portfolio piece a week' thing. Need to get into the groove!
