    Sketchy Things

As a forewarning, all pages are quite image intensive, unlike my later pages.

    - - -

    Hello and this is my Sketchbook! I hope that all I post in here can be considered sketches and all that good nonsense. ^^;

Just an FYI, I marked it "NSFW" for any future *cough* additions to this thread that it may apply to.

( You can totally ignore the following paragraphs if you want. XD )

I have been lurking around for several months, a bit decimated by how everyone is great in their own way while I have yet to realize even the possibility that I might have potential. But, I am in my senior year now and will soon face the hardships of adulthood. (Wow, do I sound cheesy now.) I've decided, after acquiring some new-found confidence recently, to put myself out in the open so I can achieve great new heights. So, a part of my master plan is to integrate into the ConceptArt community.

I hope that being a part of this serious website will help me mature into becoming more serious, motivated and, of course, better at art. I hope to become more open and comfortable too in the art community and myself. Last, but certainly not least, I hope that making ConceptArt as part of my life commitments will keep me focused what I want to accomplish. So, I guess, bear with me and wish me luck?

(The next two posts were for the first four images of my second post.)

Good to hear that you've finally started your sketchbook, not much critique I can give you on your figures and faces, since I'm a beginner myself, though I'd suggest studying and referencing from anatomy books like Bridgman, Hogarth, Vanderpoel, etc.

    Good luck on your journey!
    Exon needs your critique!

I agree with Exon-Iron, study anatomy and faces. Although it´s hard it will help you a lot to improve your own drawing.
And keep it up, here are a lot of ohter artist who are dealing with the same problems and aims to become better!

Ah, okay. ^_^ Thank you for the information/comment. And out of all the authors which do you recommend?

Long time no post. xP But now school is over, I have time to post stuff up. I'm gonna spend the next few posts to fill in the missing time. I took Intro to Digital Media over the summer, 3-D Design during Fall, and, as of today, was taking Drawing and Composition I for Spring.

Summer and Fall 2010, with a little of Winter Break and the beginning of the Spring 2011 semester:

Here are more recent works from my Draw-Comp class, up to mid-April:

    And that's that for now. Will upload more and then more recent stuff. ^^;

Some works in my sketchbook for Draw-Comp. Planar, cross-contour, gesture, portraits. Oh, and the first one is a copy of some drawing I was given. My professor assigned it.

Some sketches from my notebook. Tried to play with contrapposto for some of them. These were done in... what? Late April to early May, I think.

... And I removed the other works I was going to put up because I'm confused to whether I should put them in the Fine Arts forum or if it is okay for me to do so.

    Hi!

I can already see some improvement in your faces. Keep it up!

Theres one advice I can give you: perhaps you shouldn't draw every single line to define a form. When I look at your drawn eyes, I see a complete outline - which doesn't even vary in size and blackness. So - leave some (light) areas blank, make others darker instead, ...
When you draw lips it is a good advice to draw the upper lip darker (... when the light source is above the head, because this area would lie in the shadows then...)

Do you learn stuff from anatomy books? Loomis, Bammes, Bridgman, Vanderpoel, etc etc etc ........ ?
BTW: There are free Bridgman-PDFs on the internet, cause his works are really old and so its freeeee

Hope to see some more studies of you soon!

Thank you for your considerate response! I couldn't agree with you more.

I'll remember to make the upper lip darker and vary my line thickness as well as pay more attention to light. (I have been avoiding it, actually... )

I've learned anatomy mostly from my stupid observations and tutorials I find online than anything else. So, lol, I know I'm doing something wrong there. xD But I welcome any criticism on that front.

However, I own several anatomy books, even a Bridgman, and hopefully I'll crack them open soon.

o.o And I didn't know about his work becoming public domain (is that the correct term?). I guess I'll just go hunt him down soon then...

AND FUCK IT I AM GOING TO POST MY FINE ART STUFF HERE SINCE I'M TOO FUCKING SCARED OF POSTING THIS IN THE FINE ART FORUM. So sick and tired of uploading it just to remove it... so much work... All 18x24 inches and for my Draw-Comp class. And chronologically out of order... Everything, except the ink portrait, were still life drawings to varying degrees.

nice form studies, for your portrait drawings you should also make core and cast shadows so the form of the face is readable, kinda like that head planes study you made.

Cool studies! If you don't mind my asking, who is your professor? From the looks of it, he teaches much the same material as mine. I wonder if he was a student of my prof. (The ellipses inside of the bottles and pitchers are almost a dead giveaway).

Here are works from my personal sketchbooks. After the first one, I got into the groove and I think I drew more better stuff. God, I feel so proud of these, even though I know they suck. XD

And that's all of the sketchbook sketches.

(Note to self: always clean the scanner before you scan. I mean seriously. WTF with that black dot?!?!?)

Hey, good work so far. The key piece of advice i can give to anyone at this stage is to forget about detail. Hard outlines and exact shapes are only going to hold you back, so rather put emphasis on creating forms, shapes and shaded mass in your drawings. Figure out the volume of what you're drawing and don't worry about screwing up a drawing. Start a new one, paper's cheap. So if something's not working, rather start a new one. And get rid of your eraser. At least for the time being, but if things go the right way, you'll never need one again!

    Good luck and keep posting!

Lol, sorry for the late formal thank you. Your post means a lot to me. I find that when I do draw while considering the responses I've been given, I would fall back into my habit. It makes me curious... Is there some exercise that could break me of this hard outline habit? I'm guessing I should work more with larger surfaces and play with the mass gesture technique.

Anyhoo, here is what was supposed to be a quick warm-up that turned out to be a 4-hour sketch.

I... I don't know why the horizontal lines turned out crooked, especially when I was very meticulous...

And these are the more recent stuff.

I tried implementing the comments I've been getting from here on out. This is the only one in this bunch, but I do have more... shaded drawings in my sketchbook.

Oh hi there, sketchbook. Long time no post. ^^;;; Did these two while I was tutoring my cousin. I was supposed to draw images that embodies the given vocabulary, and he was supposed to guess what word matched each image.

You're doing a lot of work, which is good.

This piece shows you drawing/thinking volumetrically, which is a good start.

Try to think that way when doing pieces like this later piece. Remember the lessons of the Asaro (Planar) head that you drew. Think about those facial planes.

    Keep going!
