No color is applied!?

I've run into this issue several times in Painter and photoshop. Never really figured out why nor have I found a solution (or at least a reason) when searching.

The issue is that at times when I lay a stroke of dark color over another color that's darker about a tone or so, the stroke above won't get painted. Now, if I use an lighter color or a brighter color (less neutral) there is no problem, the color below is covered by my new stroke.

This usually happens with the more subdued, dark and neutralised colors.

Any way to 'fix' this, or at least is there a reason and logic behind this so I can understand the nature of it and work around it and know when to suspect it might happen.

I need more data, cause if you have same problem in both programs, all points out to be a problem of the tablet.


Whjat tablet are you using?, did you had an old tablet installed?, whats are your drivers? are they the new ones?

What painter do you have?

Ok I am using a 12x12 intuos 3, latest drivers. Painter is version X. Photoshop is also 10.0 (CS3). I don't see how the tablet can affect the way the software applies color. If I have say, two bands of color, one light and one dark, and I draw a third one across the two, if the color is like I mentioned before, it will apply color on the light color but not on the darker one. It behaves as if the darker color is masked.

This doesn't always happen. As I said it happens when two diffused, dark tones colors are interacting. Oh and by the way, it happens regardless of which one of the two is already on the canvas, if I am trying to paint the darker color over the slightly lighter one, it won't get painted.
