I find it useful to sometimes get out of my seat and take a good close look at the object. Sometimes litterly put my hands on it to understand the shape more and values you really just gonna have ti try and analyse where the light is coming from and how the material responds with reflection.
I find still lifes very difficult as well but i think yours is looking really good so far
But yeah, just like everything else practise makes perfect i guess keep up the great work!

studies are really paying off already, nice updates!
I hope you can keep yourself motivated because i personally think your work has a lot of potential, you just need to grow in it and get to the point where you're comfortable with your own skills

    Hey, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! you asked me if i do a lot of landscape painting;

No, not at all. As a matter of a fact i should probably do more. I've only painted directly from a landscape, "plein air painting" once or twice. Almost everything i do as practice is pretty much just out of my head, or with photoref on the side. Even then i rarely like drawing directly from a photo. I like to get an idea of what i want to do like "something jungle-esque..." then just rough something out, and then start looking at reference if i need it (which is almost always at some point in most paintings). But i'll usually use the reference for lighting, texture, or just how something looks like treeroots, water, etc. But yeah, i mostly like practicing by painting from imagination.

By the way you have a really nice sketchbook going here. I especially like your line drawings, you've got pretty clean linework. The only crit i can say is that i think in some sketches or on some of the characters in here i wish the linework would be taken a bit further. I like to take my rough sketches, and put them on a layer, fade the layer back, then draw over the transparent lines and add details, clothing, anatomy, etc. It would be awesome of some of your characters were cleaned up and blown up big, then painted after the lines were super clean. It almost looks like you may have done something similar in your last post. But yeah it might yield some killer results.

    Anyway, cheers! keep it up!

i'm wondering, what is the effect you want to get when you paint skin? Is it something necro/morbid-like? I have no problem with that and in that case your colours work really well, but it would be more interesting if you add light sources with different colour and etc, like you did with the nose in your last paint, it makes the character look even more interesting so i would recommend you experimenting with it

    more stuff...

I actualy never really thought about it that much Lav. I guess that is something I should think more about sometimes. I was honestly playing around and not thinking about the color as much. I guess I was just experimenting.

    Thanks raminafshari.

I did a still life while I was bored at work today. It was actually a nice change of pace than what I've been doing. I'll try to do more of these. I'm not always into painting but for some reason this seemed fun and made me more relaxed.

Also for hw from my anatomy workshop, I had to pick a cartoon character and draw the skeleton of it. I chose spiderman because he is my favorite character. This was actually tough because of the foreshortened angle and figuring out some of the bone structure was a bit difficult. I think I managed to get it even though I simplified some of the skeleton structure such as the rib cage but I'm overall happy with how it came out. I'll see how it goes at the workshop tonight.

    Enjoy!

    Yo bro

Some good work in here.. your figures do feeling a bit scrawny though imho.. you may want to consider being a bit more dynamic with them.. my draw isn't much better but maybe it will help you..

    a painting

Today I decided to tackle on painting my coat. It's hard because there are a lot of shapes to look at. I had to move my coat so unfortunately, I couldn't finish it.

a new illustration I'm working on...

This is a new illustration I started. Right now I guess I'm focused on getting the animals down correctly. The drawing should hopefully be finished soon but it's taking me longer than I thought. It's hard to draw animals in action.

Heya, the doodles are pretty cool, the coat study looks great too. One or two more values for the back and middle parts of the coat could help I think. Good luck with your next study.

    More progress....

Here is more progress on the illustration I'm working on. I'm realizing that this is going to take a lot longer than I thought. I'm nowhere near done with it. I also realized how much I suck at drawing things from different points of view and from different action poses. I was getting a little better at it but by doing this illustration, it's really forcing me to draw these animals in ways I probably wouldn't do normally. I guess my point is that it's taking me out of my comfort zone which is a good thing. I need to do this more often. I still didn't draw the person on the horse.

More progress to come. I still need to scan some drawings to but I haven't had a chance yet.

    work in progress

Thanks batcustard and Aquaticdog for the comments. Even though I'm taking baby steps I feel like I am venturing into different territory that I wouldn't normally do.

Here is a work in progress. I started drawing this character as a doodle and decided to work on it and add a background. I'm basically experimenting more with brushes and want to start using more texture.

    More work coming soon.

I love the volumes in her face. Keep contrast in mind tho for your environment, trees that are further away from the eye will have less colour and fade out into grey, the ones closer to the eye are darker. Are you making the brushes yourself?

    more progress....

Thanks Lav. I actually have been collecting brushes either from online or from tutorials I've downloaded from this site. I have made some brushes before but they never seem to turn out right. It takes a lot of experimenting and trial and error to get the right effect you want from a brush you make yourself. I thought it would be a good idea to test out the brushes I have.

    Anyway, here is more progress.
