J.D. Kutzer is a graphite addict (nudity)

Hello CA, as you may notice i joined this remarkable .org awhile ago, only to muster up enough courage to start posting this very evening. This website has inspired a lot of hard work and I've decided to start working even harder, thus i begin the commitment to regular updates of my studies and attempts to apply them. It goes without saying that crits are welcome and very much appreciated.

unfortunately i don't have access to a good scanner so i used my camera, sorry for the crappy quality

Some of my older stuff (late '09)

This ones from a long time ago the summer of '08, but i found it again and i like it

and here's some more recent stuff

    alright one more for now

some more background. I haven't been painting for more than a semester (because i was afraid of it until some one taught me) and i know jack shit about digital painting (although i'm gonna start doing regular studies tomorrow morning). when i was a kid of 8 years i took art classes at the Art Association of Harrisburg in Harrisburg, PA. I was moved into high school level classes after one course, however me and my ADHD personality found video games and T.V more agreeable than art and alas i didn't get back into it until age 21 (not a day goes by where i don't think, "FUCK ME!) but that's in the past and i should move on!) So now i find myself obsessed making amends for easily the biggest mistake of my life. No excuses, no half assing, no delusions of grandeur, an exodus from a paradigm of mediocrity and incompetence.

    any way......

as i promised some paintings. an N.C Wyeth study and the second acrylic i've ever done and some watercolor photo studies (3 out of 8 of my first attempt at the media) shitty photo quality again so sorry about that again.

    36x23 inches

all of these are 4x7 inches

eeesh that photo shop didn't go so well so i'm gonna keep it to myself....

so here's some multi limbs i've been doing over the past couple of days (in my "spare" time). the idea was inspired by janaschi, as well as a random sketch of a girl reading a book, and lastly a quick (less than 10 minutes) sketch of anime-ish faces after looking at leJeanx3's SB. i got my hands on a scanner, but i couldn't get it to work (damn my life) so this will be the last time i apologize for poor photo quality.

i just realized i drew the nose of the girl on the right as if it were almost straight on, whereas it should be 3/4 like the rest of her face

some stuff from Crimson Daggers, and a a couple crappy cross contour drawings of torsos. I'm definitely going to do more of these, slower, more carefully, in other words better. I've been busy with school stuff, one project i restarted and i need to bust my butt to get it on schedule, and a painting due on friday morning. i'd like to spend more time drawing full figure stuff w/out reference, maybe i'll squeeze in a multi limb thing or something tomorrow. Who knows, thanks for looking.

Awesome awesome awesome stuff in here, and especially the graphite studies.

To put in a thumbnail for your thread you edit you first post.
Then you use the "attachment manager" and upload the file you want. You can do this for all of your post as it may seem easier than using an alternate image hosting site. The thumbnail will only count for your first post though.
    Hopefully i explained that okay.

    Keep up the good work!

I love the figures and paints man, they look great. And cheers for the comment on my SB. I never really did 3d/Photoshop in college much. Mostly learned through video tutorials. If you can learn somewhere decent though, give it a go. It's something I'd love to do meself. It'd go really well with illustration too I'd say

sketchii-mop: thanks for telling how to put up the thumbnail (now i just need to make a good one), and of course thanks for the kind words.

Gyzmotnik: thanks, I feel like that combination would be killer if i get really good at both.

Blizzard5291: thanks, i'm pretty confident that it was my drawing ability that allowed me to pick it up quickly, but i'm still trying to master traditional media, and i imagine it'll take me some time.

gnilrE: looks can be deceiving, i've got a some more studying to do before my understanding of anatomy is "rock solid". Thanks for the kind words.

sarbro: the paintings are done with winsor & newton artist water color on 300lb cold press (i like hot press better but it's trickier) all with a kalinsky sable #8 brush (pretty pricey but a great water color brush). And yes all those drawings are done in graphite 2H, H, HB and HB mechanical, i'd like to use charcoal again, but i think i will wait until i have time to breath (i should be painting right now) and i think by "normal" pencil you mean a #2 which is also an HB, and no i try to use top quality media only, the graphite isn't as good in a writing pencil. Oh yes and thank you

DeeStar: thank you. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so my pencil work drives me crazy, but i love it and i love getting better and broader in style. I hope my paintings and digital work will one day surpass my graphite

OKAY soooo, i have a LOT of work to do, but i really wanted to draw today and here's what i did. first one is from imagination and the second was a quick study. Also a still life for CD that didn't got so well...

    decent stuff, kutz.
my main crits are the following:
-avoid unnecessary rendering (something i fuck up constantly)
    -careful of proportions in anatomy
-experiments with brushes when doing digitals. I know youre new to tablet work, but finding brushes that lay in color and blend better will save lots of time.

    my last crit:

dont take ill2 too seriously. i made that mistake and it cost me 4 months.

Jamie a.k.a OmertA: thank you, looking forward to making more to post!

Henchman 21: thanks for the crits Dan, and especially for elaborating on the unnecessary rendering. As soon as I got the syllabus for Ill. 2 my ambitions for a 4.0 semester went down the toilet, we have a hand full of assignments that employ annoying gimmicks, like the "playbook" assignment that i'm cranking out for thursday and the joker/citizen kane thing up next. I feel like i want to do a good job none the less, but i really wish i could spend the time rendering environments and drawing character sheets, or even some story boarding. I get really discouraged when my biggest self criticisms are instead praised by James.

Sarbo: i feel like i didn't detail it enough, try looking up thirsty brush, wet on wet painting, and wet on dry. I'd go into detail put i'm falling asleep and i still need to get more done tonight. you know what i'll elaborate on your SB next time i post.

Exon-Ion: Thanks, why i didn't start earlier? it took me awhile to realize that it's ok to admit your not pro quality out of inexperience, and i think i was a little afraid i'd flop and not commit to my SB, but here i am and i'm glad i didn't get here any later, especially with crimson Daggers, Dave Rapozza is a really good motivator and joining a study group has helped me stay on task.

Nuno:thanks, now if i could draw as well with out reference... well that's time and hard work so we'll see.

    *sigh*

Been busy, and I'm a little lazy 'cause of the after effects of sleep deprivation. Trying to keep sketching and doing digital studies on the side while i do cumbersome assignments for school. It's not that i don't like the concepts behind the assignments, or that i can't handle the work, it's the fact that i'm paying as opposed to being paid to have some one give me a fake job, that doesn't really relate to what i want to do as a career. What can you do... get depressed and think about dropping out? yes... feel like shit and second guess yourself? yup... deal with it and look forward to the summer where you can make a much bigger dent in the learning process? sounds like the one!

Any way, enough complaining. random imagination sketch and some gesture studies focusing on the three masses. gonna do two pages of guys next. lastly i tried the light bulb again, key word: tried

gonna start up on master studies, when i come back to still lifes i'll set up a better background than a water color pad on my drafting table.

OKAY, another less than great update but any way...

I've been sick this last week, as well as busy painting a lot for school. went to the MFA on Friday with my class. I did some sculpture sketches and i want to go back and do better ones. Some Posemaniacs and a crappy sketchbook drawing.

And i tried a digital master study and it was baaaaad. so i'm gonna start over and i'll post it when it looks at least a little bit good.

great studies! the different perspectives are awesome! suck at that though.

And about the last drawing. her right arm seems to be off. It gives the feeling that the soulder is where the drapery ends, but could also be because auf the perspective. Love her design. Is it supposed to be similar to the Mayas or Aztec?
Can´t wait to see the digital study, so keep it up!
