    Hey guys,

Thanks Martin for the nomination. That first sketch group you organised those years ago put me on this path.

A little more about me: I'm from Melbourne Australia, and been working as a Maya rigger in 3d for the past couple of years. The company I was at went under, and I took my savings and put it all into following a more creative field; concept art. Being self taught is frustrating, I'm not going to lie. There is a lot of trial, error and bad bad drawings. But when you hit on a gem of knowledge; like a Loomis book or a MB download, you get as much out of it as you can.

I've spent the last 2 years teaching myself line & value in between working as a freelance 3d animator/rigger. Colour studies are the current challenge with the end goal being able to forge nature and consistently draw convincing images. Thanks for the opportunity to partake in this sweet, sweet program.

Please click through to check out my sketchbook. Feel free to point and laugh at my earlier work. I know I do.

    Hey all

Big Thanks to ma Bro Jovian M for the nomination

    So a little intro.

Im Michael Berube, I live in Ottawa, Canada. i am 18 years of age. I have type 1 diabetes. Ive been drawin forever. I found conceptart about 3 years ago. Since then ive been pushing myself to learn everything i can and still have fun. These forums and the artists here a big influence and inspiration to me and have shown me a whole different world.

i dont have any art related work experience. I was lucky enough to have a fine art education. I went to a local artist for lessons for 6 years and now i do my own thing : D. Im really excited to see what else there is to learn out there.

    Hello CA !
My name is Danny Kundzinsh I live in Bakersfield California, and I have been in love with art since day one and always been drawing as a hobby, though life has taken me to a different path not the most artistic one, but ever since I discovered conceptart.org my life has changed 180 degrees.

since the moment I saw the sketchbooks around here and some very inspiring artists I knew what I want to do with my life, I want to become a concept artist and work in the entertainment industry and I'm willing to work my butt off to get there. I never believed money is the most important thing in life but unfortunately it is when you got a wife and a daughter that you have to support and some how find the time to study art.

If there is any one out there that really needs this scholarship that would be definitely me.
my friend Icecold told me today that an opportunity comes once in a life time and he was right.

Thank you and good luck to the rest!!

    Scholarship to TAD

I discovered my interest in drawing when I was in primary three. I still remember each time after watching a cartoon movie; my friend and I would redesign the characters of the story and made up our own. I also like to draw and design characters and combined them into storybooks during my spare time. When I was told in class to write an essay about what I would like to be when I grew up, the term ‘artist’ was the first thing that came to my mind, and during those days, the important of art was not emphasized therefore I had no ideas that I can advance my study in this area. A turning point came when I discovered this website when I was in secondary school. This website has a great impact on me and it helps me to learn more about the art design industry. Through the website I truly realize what my passion is and what I want to become, which is involving myself in game industry as a concept artist. My ultimate goal is to be a successful concept artist who can inspire, motivate, and share my experiences with other young artists like me in the future, yet I understand that the game industry today is more complex and I need to work diligently and get more exposure from abroad as I can hardly obtain this specific education in Malaysia. Therefore I am applying for the TAD Scholarship in Entertainment Art. I have been waiting for this opportunity for a very long time and if given a chance, this will be a huge step forward and a life changing experience for me.

Below are the works submitted to TAD

My name is Shiraz and I live in Israel.

I came across conceptart.org about two and a half years ago, while searching for information on how to become a concept artist. Living in a small country with about zero education opportunities in this field, I knew I had to look for the answer abroad- that is the USA. Unfortunately, I soon realized, like many of you I believe, I just could not afford such education due to the enormous tuition for such art schools.

Despite the disappointment, I decided not to give up. I promised myself to pursue my dream and do whatever I can in order to make it come true. I've decided to take whatever life do give me and proceed with whatever means I have- which are the internet (and CA of course!), books, local art classes and some common sense.

I've put a lot of effort and energy in order to get to the point I'm at today, and I'm willing to continue to work hard and do whatever it takes. I hope I get fortune enough to win a scholarship, and learn from those who have the knowledge and experience to guide me along my journey.

I wish us all good luck and strong faith :-) Thank you.

My goal is the same as most artists I think. I just want to get what I see in my head down onto the paper. I’ve come to learn that the best artists are also those who spend the most time practicing and working. I’ve also learned that there is very little outside of art that I can or want to do. I still live as a normal person of course, but everything always comes back to art in some way.

Once it got switched on I haven’t been able to shut it off even when I wanted to. Everything inspires, color is everywhere, value is everywhere, everything real or imagined has a form and structure that I can’t escape, and I finally came to realize that it’s in me and I’m in it. So now there’s nowhere to go but further into it. A chance to train under and alongside the best eyes and hands in our little slice of art history is all I could hope for.

    Good luck to everyone!

    Hey folks,
    I'm Sagi from Tel-aviv, Israel.

I've have been holding a pencil, or some sort of stick shaped media, pretty much since I was born. My talent was encouraged throughout my upbringing, and the disney cartoons provided the motivation to keep fantasizing and drawing.

But you know how it is, when you grow up, they tell you you need to get a "real" profession. So, I followed my parents' footsteps and went to study Architecture. This was certainly a less creative subject than I hopped, but fortunately creative enough for me to get exposed to interesting subjects like design, perspective and composition. I quickly noticed how I enjoy the conceptual thinking process and the presentational work much more then the planning and detailing phases. It was also around the time that I discovered this community and the tons of inspiration it provides. It still took me five years of Architecture studies to dare and make a move towards a career as a concept artist.
To make a long story short, for the last two years I've been working my butt off, mostly at nights after work, to become a better artist and designer.
I think that I've progressed nicely and my motivation is up, but, I can't tell how strongly I feel the lack of basic knowledge and professional guidance. There's not much to do about it in israel, so TAD seems like a terrific opportunity. You can get far with talent and tons of hard work but you can't compare it to the tools offered to us at TAD.
I would really like to get this scholarship simply because it will help me improve in what I enjoy doing.

Here's some of my work. Best of luck to all.

    Hello

My name is Hannes. I'm currently 21 years old and live in Leipzig, Germany. I registered here on CA two years in a difficult phase of my life, when I was struggling to find orientation. Drawing and painting happened to be the thing I was interested in, and so with the help of this great community I started just... working on my stuff, and practicing every day. I always felt like I was at a disadvantage because I really just started drawing... well... at that time... haha... But I realized that it's really not at all about talent or being born with a pencil in hand, but about putting in the effort and just working and doing it...
Two years later and I've found some amazing friends, learned tons of things about life and art and most of all, managed to escape what would have been a terrible life... I even got into an artschool here, only to drop out again after a few weeks, because it's such a joke... I got kicked out of class for... drawing in class, can you believe it? This is why I want to go to TAD, because I know there's no bullshit there, just dudes who are awesome and good at what they do. I really want to go as far as I possibly can, and I now realized that there's no limit to what you can achieve. I've only just been getting warmed up!

    applying for scholarship

My name is Ester Wilson, I've been drawing since I can remember - through school, on weekends, after the day job. I hope to develop a higher level of skill in drawing and painting, and also build the confidence and portfolio necessary to make a living from my work. I applied to take the Drawing/Painting courses at the Art Department because the traditional methods of creating is important to me. My focus has mainly been on figure and portrait work, but I definitely want to expand my portfolio to create work that bridges the space between a timeless classic and today's response to life.

This is such a huge opportunity that I am grateful to be part of. Everyone here deserves the chance at this and a chance at their dream. I have to be honest and say that I want that full scholarship. Growing up I was always a person to make others happy especially my family so even though I grew up drawing I didn't think to follow that. My eyes were finally opened. Against the opinions of some, I made the choice to go after my talent and passion so I moved out of state and went to art school. Well, it was more like animation school in the end. My eyes were opened again, and I knew I wanted to be a Concept Artist but not everyone (faculty here and there) was a fan of that idea. Rather than get into the details, I'll move forward-I graduated. Before graduation till now I have been teaching myself about concept art which leads me to now. I want to learn from the best first hand, this is the next big step to my ultimate goal.

    For your consideration

My name is Glen Ostrander. I'm 36 years old and I live in Rhode Island. I graduated college with a BFA in Illustration in 1997 from CCAD, and since then haven't felt I have been able to reach my full potential as an artist. Not because I feel my college provided a poor curriculum, but because of the path I took so soon after. Since graduating, I've had to take any job I could to support my family and this lead me into product design. I continued to try and grow my illustration skills on the side and all the while trying to do my family right and bring home the money. I worked as a product designer for 8 years until finally the company I worked for abruptly folded and left me without a backup plan. Because of the continuing poor job market I haven't been able to find another job in product design, and to be honest, don't care to. My heart isn't in it. At the moment I've taken a temporary job as a hand painter for Hasbro, Inc. to make ends meet. And although this is a great opportunity to work for a fine toy company, this soon will end in early June and I will once again be at square one. I received an email earlier today from conceptart.org, which I have been a part of since 2003, providing information about TAD. So, I'm looking to do something about it and I thought that the time was now to refocus and invest in myself and follow my true dream. With that, I'd like to thank Nick Miller for providing a thoughtful nomination for me and look forward to whatever the future holds. Good luck to all the other nominees.
    Thank you for your consideration,
    Glen

My name is Wanchana Intrasombat, I'm 23 and I'm Thai. I'm really interested in painting. I hope to develop a higher level of skill in drawing, painting, and illustration and some animation. I really need the opportunity to study everything about the world of computer graphic. I have finished the bachelor's degree in fine art after I finished I had just know about the 2D (digital painting) and very love that. So this opportunity is very huge for me and I think everbody. Thank you very much Art Department.

Here are some of my works.

    <----Vote fer this one :D

First and foremost: Thank you endless war for the nomination and thank you Jason Manley and everyone at conceptart.org for this opportunity.

OK well the long and short of my bio is: I'm a 25 year old artist living in a town with very few other artists that has never had the opportunity to continue my education. My community college offered vid production as the closest thing to what I wanted then told me that they wouldn't give me financial aide til I turned 24 (I was 18 at the time). Art is something I've always wanted to make my career but after years of all my teachers telling me that you cant make a career out of art and not being part of a supportive art community I was left wondering what I was going to do with my life. One day I got an email from CA.org about portfolio reviews and I almost cried I was so surprised. Since then I have been hooked, taking any class here that I can afford to take yet still cannot afford to pay for college on my own. Hopefully you voters out there will see potential, imagination, and a strong message in my work and consider me for the full ride scholarship so I can continue chasing my dream.

All the work done here is by hand and a high school education, I think with a wacom and a college education I can do a lot more

I feel like I would make a strong candidate for scholarship consideration for reasons that may not be readily evident in my artwork. If you were to facilitate my attending TAD’s Kansas City Pod through scholarship, I believe I would prove to be an incredibly strong member of the class because of my skills, training and experience outside of picture making. I feel that even though my technical skill has much room for improvement, I have a unique and point of view shaped by my wide breadth of artistic interest. I am a trained improvisational actor, having completed the course and performed at Imrov Olympic in Chicago. I am a musician and have not only self-released several albums, but have been featured on a compilation of “nerdcore rap” along side Andy Samberg’s group, Incredibad and Kool Kieth. I am a working graphic designer and as such have a strong grasp on not only visual problem solving, but working with clients and on a deadline. I am also an avid student of art history and understand that knowing where your art fits in today’s world means knowing the art world of the past. I’d love to bring these divergent interests and talent to the studio at TAD. I have been a member of this community for more than 2 years now and have tried to be helpful, positive and honest with my critiques. This is something I will continue to be here, on CA when attending TAD. I’d also simply like to restate my enthusiasm and drive. Discovery was the kick-in-the-pants that lead me finally to the realization that now is the time I need to really work to make my life the life I want to lead.

I wish you all the best of luck, I'd love to have you all as classmates!

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity,
    Andy Brinkman

Hello, ConceptArt.org! My name is Cory Trego-Erdner. I'm an artist, student, science and science fiction geek, surfer, and very casual musician from California. I've been fascinated by dinosaurs, animals, creatures, monsters, and all manner of fantastic things since I can remember. I spent my childhood imagining creatures in the shapes of clouds and trees and inventing my own worlds and stories. One day, in Barnes and Nobles, I found a book called The Art of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi. It was a revelation. People actually did what I did for fun, for a living! From that moment on, I knew what I wanted to be. Ever since, I have worked towards that goal. Through my childhood and high school years I worked my imagination to the bone, turning out thousands of pages of robots and aliens and characters. When I went to college I discovered the value of observational drawing, and developed a fascination with the human form and its construction.

I joined ConceptArt.org in 2006, after my first year in college, and it was another revelation. Before, becoming a concept artist was a powerful yet vague dream. Finding this place gave me concrete information about just what it meant to be a concept artist and what it took to become one. The people and activities here contributed immeasurably to my artistic growth, and in turn I tried to give back by giving detailed and honest critiques and sharing my knowledge in my mentoring thread. Just look here, at my CA sketchbook, or here, at my mentoring thread, to see how I've grown and how I've tried to give back.

I don't so much want a scholarship for TAD as need one. Like many of the others who have already posted, I am poor. I cannot afford to pay $500 bucks a month, though I do strongly appreciate the efforts Jason Manley and everyone at TAD have made to make the program significantly less expensive than the traditional art schools. I don't even know if a half-ride scholarship will make things financially feasible in my current situation.

So, ConceptArt.org, here's what I ask. You have helped me so much in the past 3 1/2 years, and I've tried to help back. Now, I'm asking you, if you think my work merits it, to give me the biggest help of all, a full ride to The Art Department.

If you don't think I deserve it, or if you think someone else deserves it more, then I'll just be seeing you around the forums, because TAD will have to wait. Either way, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, everyone.

(Note: The fourth image down is an unpublished magazine illustration which I was given permission to release for the purpose of applying for TAD and scholarships only. I'll be taking it down as soon as the voting's done.)
(Another note: I finished my application, but I'm having some complications submitting it. I emailed TAD for help. I sure hope that doesn't affect my candidacy.)

    Hey dude,
just doing a study of it for own, non-commercial, educational purposes is obviously what you call Fair Use.
And if I couldn't tell something that's painted from something that's "edited and posted as your own", I wouldn't go around accusing people.

I completely agree with you algenpfleger. Anyone can see from your body of work that wasn't a paint-over, and it was clearly labelled as a study.

Hell half the stuff in my folio is from ref in some way... especially the caricatures.

All the best with the TAD course. Hope to be able to study with you.

Hey Jason, just making sure that I'm also on the list for the women's scholarships that are our there and anything else I may qualify for. If I've missed a step please let me know. Thanks!!

Also, I'm pretty sure the deadline for this scholarship is up so where does it explain how and where people vote? I'm probably being premature and you're probably working on it as I'm typing this....

    Michael Noel's Submission

Hey, just wanted to thank you guys for the opportunity to enter this. There is a ton of talent on this website, and if they make it multiple choice, I'm voting for all of you!

My name is Michael Noel, and I've been interested in art since I drew a lumpy potato man with mismatched eyes before I went to kindergarten. Fortunately, I've come a long way since then! Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, I was never able to attend college (convinced that hard work and practice would get me there), but I'm starting to regret the lack of schooling in my art career. It was dumb of me to think that I could make it without any help, and so I'm humbly asking for the chance to work with professionals who have already been in each of our shoes and made it.

A career in art, combining our passion with our work, is an ideal life, and something nobody should not pursue if at all possible. I am constantly admiring the artists that shape the things I love, that bring form to the visions of creators everywhere, and I would love nothing more than to someday be one of them.

But the bridge between a kid with a pen, pencil, and a terrible working knowledge of digital art and a working, professional artist with a clear knowledge of the mediums they use is a longer bridge than I could have imagined. I work a steady job and pursue art when I get the chance. To wake up in the morning and dive into my art headfirst, knowing that the thing I love doing is also paying my bills seems like a fantasy, but I know it's possible, so I keep taking steps towards that goal. Hopefully I'll be able to further my goals here in this class, and if not, I'll continue working hard.

But hopefully I can learn from the best, and make that bridge a little easier to traverse.

Anyways, thanks for checking out my work, I hope to work with you guys soon, whether it's in this class, or after we've all crossed that bridge into professional territory.

    Thanks for your time, Michael

Thanks to Janae for the lovely nomination!

My name is Jska Priebe, I'm a self-taught artist currently residing in Las Vegas, NV. I've been interested in art my entire life, and have always enjoyed sharing my images with others. From a young age I learned that creating artwork was a wonderful way to connect with people. Acquiring a quality art education has always been a dream of mine, however I was never able to afford the kind of education I desired. After an unfulfilling experience with an art program after high school, I decided that I would have to take my education into my own hands. It wasn't until after discovering ConceptArt in 2004, and consequently attending my first ConceptArt workshop in 2006, that I started to take the idea of having an art career seriously. Since then, I've made gradual changes and sacrifices to change my life from the ground up in the efforts to better myself as an artist and as a communicator. In 2007, I quit my job in art retail management and took the leap into freelance illustration and fine art, and have been going ever since. I have done everything I've been able to get my hands on - graphic design, web design, sculpture, illustration, gallery shows, and live art events. Through everything, I've always tried to keep a sense of myself in my imagery while learning new media, technique, and theory. It's been an amazing journey so far and I feel that it is just beginning!

I feel privileged to be included amongst other potential students with such drive and determination. I feel that not only can we all benefit from one another, but obviously from the amazing quality of knowledge being graciously shared with us. Good luck to my fellow nominees!

Although I am highly confused about why some of the people. (above) need to to be nomanated they would most likely get a scholarship just by applying...some of are clearly freelance\proffessional....anywho...

My name is Jesse Sanchez, i am 30 i currently wash dishes, and spend most of my free time Drunk on this website. Not really by chioce...more a habit now than anything. ive been drawing since sixteen. Ive alway's had sketchbooks and ambitions of making my own comics....i took my first art class three years ago. Showed more promise than most..working with charcoal and pencil....took an acrylic painting class a year later...suprisingly i'm better with paint than pencil....
i'v been digitaly painting on this website for almost 2 1\2 years. I participate regularly in threads such as, Daily Sketchgroup, Panels of the week and The offical draw from what everyong else looks like thread.
WHY T.A.D? Why not. altough online things baffle me. maybe if i could go to the pod in SF and train with el coro and whit bracna they could teach me the way's of the digtal JEDI!

    Thanks for nomination

I know I have lots to learn yet, but I've been studying really hard in the past three years in order to improve my art skills. I only can do it at evenings and weekends, but I still going and drawing. Some time ago I realized how much time I have wasted, and now I feel I must to get this time back. As Concept Art is what I love to do, and as I have a degree in industrial design, this is the perfect fit for me.

We don't have any sort of entertainment School here in Brazi. That's why I want to get this scolarship that much! I want to get this amazing training so I can share and help many others I know to improve themselves. I wish I can get it. That is my dream.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

Seriously, wasn't the deadline "prior to March 1st"? Meaning Feb 28th? Seems like I rushed for no reason :/

EEP! I didn't realize I'd been nominated until an hour ago... so, here goes, hope it isn't too late.

My name is Jessica, and I am 26. I'm currently living in Dallas, Texas but I went to school at VCU in Richmond, Virginia graduating with a BFA in Communication Arts in 2007. After school I found ConceptArt.org and spent about 9 months participating in challenges, getting brutal critique and trying to work my way into the game industry. I attended Revelations in Seattle where I met my fiance and made amazing connections and friends. A month later, in February of 2008, I landed a job with Pi Studios in Houston, Texas and worked there for 2 years as a concept and production artist. The economy got the better of me though, and I was laid off. I'm now looking to take the next leap, and really better myself as an artist (and be more competitive in this even more unforgiving economic climate) I want to learn and level up as long as I live, and I think this could be an awesome next step.

(Thanks a ton for the nomination, Hyskoa)

    Zach Oldenkamp

Hey, it's a big honor to be nominated!

My name is Zach Oldenkamp and i'm currently 21 years old. I moved from a small town of 48 in Iowa to San Francisco fresh out of high school when i was 18 and have been pursuing art ever since. I currently attend the conceptart.org atelier and am constantly striving to be a better artist through hard work, observation, and dedication. I do my best to study different aspects of art, from abstraction to naturalism. All of which fall under the same basic principles of drawing, painting, and design. I hope to gain a scholarship so that i can attend the drawing and painting program from TAD and do my best to pursue all three and push myself to become a successful artist. The images below represent some of my studies and small personal paintings done in graphite and oil paint. I hope you enjoy them!

    Hi Jason,
I'm a bit confused about the scholarship. You said:"This is where the artists who have been nominated and applied for the community scholarship will submit their works in preparation for the community choice voting". Does that means I have to apply for the program in the Art Department so that I can apply to the scholarship? Or the scholarship is available to anybody who is talented in art? Where to apply and how to be nominated for the community scholarship?
    Thank you for your patient.

Sagir is right, although technically it's been too late to submit your work since monday. We'll see what the TAD folk say when they come back here.

I imagine there will be some balance needing to be struck between not disappointing those who rushed to get their portfolios in on time and not disappointing those who didn't but posted anyway since there was no official word that the submission period was over (in this thread, at least).
