shiNIN Replied to your sketchbook. Thanks dude ^_^

Not so much stuff for these last days.

Wonderful piece. The main thing i want to archive with this study are the colors.
I want to test my "limit" with oil paints.

    Got a question.
Should i redraw the linework with ink that the turpentine doesn't wash it away in one time?

    Greetings,
    Valoo

PS: Missing my old sketchbook ;_; Changed my avatar and sketchbook icon to the lovely old one. All very confusing for YOU i think, but please be sorry ;>

but! you are doing great and i wish you luck on the frazetta study looks like it will be lots of fun. go on...

EDIT: LOL BACK TO SILWYNAR NOW?? D: i'm confused

lookin good in here. I don't know if you already did, but, it might've been useful to have used a small grid, even if it was a overlay, on that frazetta, so you could keep the same proportions. Keep pushin bro. Go for the gold.

teapo Haha! Great to see that you're still alive dude.
Impersenator? I loled out loud! Great entertainment dude!
Because i just started missing my old name and sketchbook i asked a mod / admin to change all this again. And here i am back in my old style.
Old sketchbook and old name. ^_^
    Thanks my friend!

agelaos Thanks. Sounds kinda great but i used a ruler to check the proprotions this time. But the woman is fucked up anyway x_x
Perhaps next time i will use something like a grid.
    Thanks!

    --------------------------------------------

As i already mentioned in teapo's reply i changed my nickname back to Silwynar.
It was just because i noticed a lot of people were already knowing Silwynar, others found Silwynar sounding more fantasy not as Valoo and beside of that little things i JUST missed my old name

Apart from that the mod / admin was also so nice to merge my (old) new sketchbook into this old one again.
So i can keep up my complete journey in this one again.
    I am kinda happy ^.^

Today i just went on with my frazetta piece where i added the first layer of oil.
I used (lighter) ochre with a lot of turpentin.
Ochre didn't look like i expected from my color chart, but it is okay.
    It' just an underlay color.

And here a 2 hour female figure study.
It looks so right BECAUSE i used in photoshop the lineal function and then used the lineal also for checking the distances between arm and breast, ...
To the point. I used a lineal! x_x
I know, not really good for learning, but i think i learned anyway some things out of this study.

Glad to see you diving in head first. It's sometimes good to get the underpainting done in one colour first before adding other colours. I used to do them in burnt umber or ultramarine. The great thing with oils as opposed to the acrylics I'm using is that it's a lot easier to match your colours when you've run out of a tone. Ink is an odd choice for the line work.

Good luck with doing still lives. They can get addictive, but you will learn so much.

that's a nice long study of the female pose in #472 i think you will benefit more if you do a lot more gestures and a few refined anatomy studies and follow it with some imaginary characters or just poses to etch it into your brain. regarding alla prima-- not sure if it can be done appropriately with digital painting but usually it's when you try to knock in a painting in one sitting. perhaps having all your colors mixed before applying onto the canvas and so forth. try *google* too

but anyway, you have some nice hue variation going on in the metal of the pocket knife and it seems to capture what metal seems to reflect (?)

    keep working hard sil!

teapo Thanks dude. Alla Prima is a word most times used in combination with oil paints. And yeah, you were right. Doing an oil painting in one run
Metal seems to reflect. Hmm. Perhaps?

i definitely understand what you're going through as you mentioned here. and you're right, it's either because you don't know how to continue painting because lacking knowledge of said material. more studies will help you overcome that problem i get stuck a lot sometimes when sketching a character because i don't know how to convey a certain pose i want and i end up switching to some 'generic' posture/stance (meaning i should probably study more poses?) XD.

anyway, studies are looking good. keep drawing :3

Your ink compared to the Franklin Booth one you posted on the previous page is that he left a lot out. That will come with practice.

Drawing figures from the imagination is tough. You need to understand the structure before playing with it. I'm busy addressing this in my own work. There are many ways to go about it - doing Loomis, Bridgeman, Reilly etc. Find out which one you find works best for you - I prefer the Reilly method more, but that's just me.

Hi there, nice sketchbook. Keep up the good work.

I made an attempt at fixing one of your studies below:

    Name: 1.jpg
Views: 530
Size: 223.9 KB

Sorry if I have butchered your drawing but I wanted to emphasize a couple of structural flows in the upper body. The red cross shows the hints you should have followed according to me. I am not a great artist so it may still have flows but I think that's a step in the right direction.

Constructive criticism should be constructive .

    My 2 cents,

    Take care.

Edit: I also wanted to mention that structure is more important than proportions. You can have the most accurate proportions in the world and yet the drawing feels completely wrong. Structural flows are not forgiving.

teapo Thanks dude. Great to know that i was right with my thinkin that i haven't the knowledge for this painting yet. ;>
And yeah, i did keep drawing!

Black Spot Thanks Black Spot. The Reilly method seems best for me, but i find it sometimes kinda hard to use this method. So for me, it's right know Gottfried Bammes and a few other books mixed together

Creusa Naaaah! I should definitely work again on that piece. But at the moment i just don't get the motivation to start working again :/ Soon dude, soon!

Zelrik I don't really get what your overpaint wants to show me, sorry dude I am doing the red line for the angle of shoulders and pelvic everytime if you meant that ? ;o
I also have to disagree with your proportion opinion.
In MY opinion proportions are more important than the structure.
    But that's just my 2 cents ^^
    Thanks for commenting!

strangedawn Thanks. Glad you like my work. I think that i could be ways better for my age. I have to train more

Keep up the bone studies. They look really fun to do. And good luck to your Frank Frazetta master study.

One thing I want to add about your Franklin Booth ink study is that you need to pay attention to the form of things. The clouds, buildings, and landscape would look more recognizable if the hatching followed the forms. Do you see how the hatchings curved on the clouds from the ink piece on the last page?

@Silwynar. My point with that red line is that you have drawn the vertical part of it in your sketch but didn't use it, in other words, you didn't draw the horizontal part of it which would have been useful to understand why the arms looked broken.

Structure is more important than proportions, if you are shooting for realism that is. Caricatures are 'living' proofs of that fact. If you don't care about realism, I can't argue with that .

I used to care about proportions a lot more than I should have. The only way for me to progress now it to understand anatomy and perspective better.

Edit: Your last gestures look nice by the way ^_^

Hey there! Great studies so far! I'm really digging the gestures and the bone studies. Your anatomy studies are coming along nicely as well. With the ink study you did earlier on, I have trouble figuring out the forms. For example, the clouds shouldn't have straight lines, but more curved lines. I hope that made sense. Keep it up!

Comparing your latest quick gesture sketches to ones from a month ago, there's LOADS of improvement! Good use of ellipses for foreshortening too. Frazetta study looks like a good start, looking forward to seeing its progress. As a minor nitpick, some of your figures lack some sense of weight like this one and this one, remember to rotate the hips when most of the weight's on one leg. I really admire your diligence, keep it up!

Take it easy with those studies Silwynar my friend,
you are overheating the hyper extended refrigerator.
You tend to elongate some of your characters.
Keep up with the magical pace.
George Clooney will be jealous pretty soon.

The structured figures are coming on nicely. You could always take a couple of them and mess about with them digitally for fun. Study, fun, study, fun - much better way not to burn out when studying, and you might learn something from having fun.
