Randomn's Sketchbook! I am desperate to improve! I THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE!!

Hello everyone, I'm a beginning artist who just started drawing around 7 months ago. I came here to learn and get some much needed feedback on my work. Most of what I draw are studies and I'm trying to absorb as much as I can!

I would love to improve so any advice you have for me will be well received!

Bridgman is awesome! At first I was intimidated by his book, but once I actually read through it, he really explains everything so well!

trying to figure out how to use custom brushes to make environments. Used another painting as a reference. Wish I could recall the artist's name though to give him credit.

Wow great sketchbook. Good to see so many studies. Keep pushing them further, and apply them in your imaginative stuff!

Do more gesture/anatomy studies too! I think you have an eye for values/color, but structure is also important.

I agree with Yih, I love your ability to use value to depict form. Looking great. And I also appreciate your studies with Bridgman. Carry on, good sir.

These are nice. How long do you spend on each study? Have you considered spending a little more time on some pieces to really "get" them? I'm seeing you improve and it's nice. I like your Rembrandt-as-a-saint piece especially.

Work on tightening up those forms, the smiley face guy is missing a chin and those thick lines flatten everything like paper mario. the cliffs study is a good start but needs more time put into it, same goes for the volcano thing which I believe is by whit brachna - texture brushes are no substitute for form, they help you to rough out ideas quickly, or add a unique finish to things - emphasis on rough. keep working on them

r y a n o i r: Sadly I have not drawn from life much but I am trying to rectify that now and start painting some still life. I would love to attend a life drawing class, hard to find one that fits my schedule though! Thanks for the encouragement

I must say! Your copies of masters are AMAZING! I know sometimes getting the colors right is a pain in the rear end! But your colors seem so fresh. Its really easy to get muddy. Your figures in the master paintings are so fluid too!
The other figures (i think your drawing them from photo reference?) I think they need some work. The poses are a little stiff. I think it helps ding timed sketches from photos and life. You should try and draw some figures from life too. Figure drawing classes are fun and some times art museums have free figure drawing nights (i know the MFA in Boston does- although the figures arn't nude- its still incredibly helpful). Or even drawing friends or family sitting around doing normal things when you hang out with thing. Or even people in school or Barns and Nobles (hahaha). They'll think your a creep though and tell you to stop, but who cares your an artist and that's what your suppose to do!

But keep it up! I loooooove you master copies... I must say again!

really good studies man! I like that your looking at guys like whistler and Rembrandt because they're the best guys to study, I suggest researching their composition techniques because they where both really good at it. anywho Cheers

Mondar: Thanks! Your post inspired me to do another master copy haha. Love learning from people who know their craft well. Definitely need to follow your advice and bring a sketchbook to a barnes and noble or something haha.

darknight: Ahhh composition! I forgot about that important aspect. I definitely need to look into them further in that regard.

Here's an update! Did a Alex Kanevsky study! Love that guy's art and tried to imitate his messy style a bit. Great practice...my hand kind of hurts now though...
