    Description

While creating a new piece, a lot of trained artists already have a precise idea of what they are after. The picture they want to create is like a set destination, and they work rigorously until this destination is reached. While technique and academic training are necessary in the creation of any piece of artwork, some artists feel they are sometimes trapped by these and feel a need to free themselves. This often manifests with an artist being bored by his own work, feeling that he lacks imagination.

One can reasonably ask themselves if for such artists, these academic methods discriminate against the most unconventional ideas. And yet, these are the ideas I want to embrace and develop.

Rather than working with a set destination in mind, I like my personal works to take me wherever they want to go. Thus the destination is never set, it evolves during the making of the picture. This is the way I feel the most free, and this is the way that I feel my ideas won't curb themselves to a limited space. To achieve this, I use a work flow based on spontaneity and instinctive feeling. Of course, a basic idea of what I want to do is necessary, or else it would be like closing my eyes and wiggling my hand at the canvas aimlessly. That starting idea can be anything, but I will use it as a starting point rather than as a goal. I won't use construction lines. What I want is to explore the canvas in a more unpredictable way, and the key to that is to take advantage of accidents.

While my work can be described as being figurative, the path that leads me to that is a more abstract one. I feel that the more free I am, the more free the observer will be to interpret my works. Of course, such a free approach makes more sense in the context of more intimate, personal works.

I stumbled over her artwork a few moths ago, loved it then, I love it still. I will buy this video end of the month. When the paycheck comes
I guess all my hard work will pay off to something awesome!

Vlc is a media player. In my opinion it is the best. Plays most files without any hassle. There you go to "video > subtitle track > open file" and there you go.

I am actually watching the video as we speak. Will comment about it as soon as I finish. (aye... I didn´t wait till the end of the month... )

Ok here are my two cents:

First off I would like to say that MassiveDVD REALLY did a good job in the description here on the top of this thread. I personally love getting extra info like this, even if we already know most of it, so thumbs up for that.

Now before I start about the vid itself, I think the subtitle part should get a head start seeing I believe this is the first subtitled vid that MB has produced.
Now, I myself have always used subtitles, even when I don't need them I often find myself putting them on... don't know why, habit, though not a must. Infact it is the way I learned Norwegian (I live in Norway now).

ANYWAYS! -At first I was a little shocked how big the subtitle writing was. To start with it gave me trouble to keep up the reading and at the same time watch the artist do her magic. -which is actually a first timer for me, seeing I use subtitles often..
But what really helped is stepping a little away from the pc/mac screen. made it so much easier! Though, still didn't really like the subtitle size. -but I'll test it out on my tv via PS3 tomorrow.
The speed of the subtitles seems just a bit faster in the drawing video than the painting one, but I think it is because of the amount of things she is explaining -wasn't toooo fond that you guys didn't type up the parts she repeated. Even though it doesn't ruin anything, I don't feel it was necessary. Maybe it is just me.

    Now for the visual part!
Wow. I really enjoyed this video. Her art is amazing, and seeing it get created is wonderful. The drawing was nice, but the painting was more breathtaking. Just those colours... Her process actually reminded me a lot about Andrew Jones. Where using colour and random strokes, and a clear mind, to create beauty.

Seriously, if you guys look at her portfolio and see anything you like, then buy this video. Enough said! Sorry for my long post... to sum things up:

    Description:
    -clean
    -precise
    -thumbs up

    Subtitles:
    -could perhaps be to big
-helps placing yourself a bit away from screen, easier to read and follow vid
-fast in certain areas, and some who aren't good, or use to reading English might have to watch over several times
-will check on regular tv via ps3 tomorrow to see if it is better than on pc/mac screen

    Video:
    -worth the money
    -worth the money
    -worth the money

Seriously, if you guys look at her portfolio and see anything you like, then buy this video. Enough said!

Hey thanks for the great feedback, Hive_minD. I'll go ahead and try and change the subtitles today... see if I can't make them a bit smaller.

Also, Veronique's friend Romain aka Ninomojo actually wrote the description of the video. Can't take credit for that.

Glad you liked the video.. Cheers!

Hive-minD > hello, thanks for your feedback !
Good to know because I'm french and unfortunately not bilingual ; I didn't imagine how that could be for english people. Especially about the subtitles, it was difficult to anticipate the duration of reading. I've done the most of the drawing part (Aaron made then a lot of changes on it, by correcting the turn of phrases and vocabulary), even if I tried to condensed as many as I could, it was hard to judge.. it's my fault
Glad you like the videos anyway !

Don´t worry, it wasn´t meant as critisism. Just giving everyone a heads up Actually it REALLY helps sitting a bit away from the screen to get a better overview.
But the video was amazing! Really! Hope too see more from you soon!

In VLC preferences you can change the font, the font size, and the background!* I tried it and it works.

    http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch03.html

*You have to stop the video and reload the subtitle file in order for it to work.

Soooo... there's no way to access the subtitles via Quicktime, only VLC? VLC crashes when I try to open any of the files, for some reason. Can someone post a step-by-step on how this exactly works?

First off, are you using mac or pc?

I have tried to get it to work via quicktime, and still struggling. Another reason I use VLC, I find it to be a better program all together. Anyways:

Open movie file in vlc, either by right-clicking>open with > vlc or drag to your vlc icon. Movie should play instantly. Then click video > subtitle track > find the correct .srt-file and it should play instantly.

What I usually do is put the .srt files (subtitle file) in the same folder as the movie files. Then change the file names so that they are identical, ergo in this example I now have:

    Veronique_Drawing.mp4
    Veronique_Drawing.srt

Usually when you play the movie file in vlc the subtitle will kick in automatically. If not (though it should) follow the instructions above.

Let me know if that helps
    Chris

It's a MAC, and I figured out that it was necessary to do the file name change to get it to work... though with VLC. No luck in Quicktime... but thanks for the response regardless!!

Glad it is working. I guess it comes to what you are use to. I have used vlc for a loooong time. Would chose it before quicktime anytime (even though I bought the pro).

But so you know, I have still been trying to figure out how to get subtitles to work in QT. I have tried several suggestions which I have found on the web without luck.

This one has a killer ending.

Ace job on the painting and video editing. The subtitles/pacing worked great
    Thanks for doing this

I used multiple subtitle packages and followed the directions on Apple's website but I continued to get errors when I loaded the files into Quicktime. Other video players (like VLC) are far more supportive of different subtitle formats so we just went with that instead.

If anyone can figure out how to convert the .SRT into a format that Quicktime will read I'll make it worth your while. I'm trying to get other videos produced so I had to stop fiddling with it after awhile.

If anyone can figure out how to convert the .SRT into a format that Quicktime will read I'll make it worth your while. I'm trying to get other videos produced so I had to stop fiddling with it after awhile.
I have done the same. I think I´ve spent around 2-3 hours on it just tonight. Gotta give it a rest now. School and work tomorrow, so I´ll try again after that. I believe the problem is Quicktime X, it just doesn´t work (I am using Mac). But tomorrow I´ll go on my windows laptop and try it on Quicktime 7. It might work there actually. I´ll let you guys know.

btw MassiveDVD, great job on these videos. Looking forward to the next ones.
