Hi everybody I've decided to round up all my efforts in this one thread and keep updating it.

My aim is become a pro sculptor and document my journey here.
I have learned so much from the community here on CA, Thankyou for having me.

So I haven't posted work up for a while here's why....

The following is a cool project I, and my good friends Judite Brandao and Aaron Wood have been working on.
It is hopefully to appear in the Halo fan film 'Operation Chastity'. You can follow the project here; http://operationchastity.com/

We are working on a prop gun know as the Covenant Carbine.
We are now onto the casting stage but I'd like to share the progress with you..

I'm a big fan of using the Uni-Thread, mainly because i dont post enough and forget how to. (and its a good way of looking back over my own progress and remembering tips and tricks I've learned)

Technical and futuristic sculpts are another element i'll be looking to add to my list of sculpting styles to try, so looking forward to your updates.

What is the flow coat? Does it go straight onto the damp day?

Hi Dunefish,
Yeah you can paint flowcoat straight onto damp clay.
When the flowcoat/resin is dry the clay can be picked out and washed off. Leaving you with a plastic like shell.

Heres the way I lay my fibreglass, it works out pretty cheap and is really strong. Ideal for support jackets that need to last a long time. Hope it make sense!


Also the following is a product description from my supplier:

An Isophthalic Flowcoat for brush application. It has been carefully formulated to give excellent brushing properties. The thixotropy has been adjusted to minimise sag on inclined and vertical surfaces.
Approved by Lloyd’s register of shipping for use in construction of reinforced plastic craft under their survey, and is widely used in the marine and construction industry's.
Wax is added for a tack free surface, commonly used on Boats, Roofs, and other outside surfaces.
Condition Flowcoat at 18 - 20 degress C prior to use, this will ensure a good coverage, if you want to lower the viscosity of the mix to help elimate brush marks add a little resin, but by doing this you may change the shade if you have ordered a colour and you will also effect the properties of the Flowcoat.

Really? Really??! - not heard of Flowcoat before. I've always sealed the clay with vinyl of some sort and gone on with gelcoat. but of course then, there is a risk (been ok so far... touchwood) that it'll inhibit and all go horribly wrong

Flowcoat is pretty easy going but I forgot to mention it doesn't like the cold -big time!
You can get like 1/2kg trial tub to have a go. As I understand it's pretty much the same as gel coat but with added wax.
Ps. Your model work is incredible Mike!

I have one question though, why the color difference?
You say you used a colour to help visibility for lay up ,how so?

Yes my bad, the colour diffrence is for the lay up. We used the same clay to make the 'dividing wall/bed' as we used for the sculpture. Seeing the sculpt clearly meant we could get really neat/close lines and produce a tighter mould.

Awesome job! thanks for sharing the process too, I've made lots of notes in my mental margins. So, you hooked on the larger scale stuff now? should we expect a 1:1 scale jabba the hutt, or are you going smaller scale for your next creation?...
