I'll agree with pretty much everyone here that your plein air work is great - stunning work there.

Unfortunately, your sci-fi fantasy images aren't up to that same level. Your characters are very stiff and lifeless and most with anatomical issues while your design elements such as the mech and the dragons are a little boring and uninspired. The environments in those paintings doesn't compare to your other work either until the last couple of images.

Good amount of work though and no one can fault you for at least trying to challenge yourself with something different.

Yeah I agree about the rocks and creature; might be a bit too much in the water though. I'll play with it some more.

Beautiful sense of light, and I love the texture the linen gives it too. Great work!

Hey thanks, I was worried the linen might be too distracting since most people working in illustration tend to paint on much smoother surfaces.

Man, gotta subscribe to this thread, I'm getting myself back into oils from a loooong digital break, such inspirational stuff on here!

The way you capture light and colours remind me of Edward Hopper (nearly put Dennis there, lol) and you've inspired me to try alla prima, though english weather doesn't usually allow it, it looks like the best way to train yourself to capture a moment thanks for sharing your skills too, will check out your blog.

    Hi Dpaint

I have looked at this many, many times and love the use of colour and light in them, My favourite is still the first one with the light bringing out the green in the waves hitting the rocky shore, having said that they are all good and well worth the effort of seeking them out.

thank you very much for posting

Just finished teaching a three day workshop and this was one of the demos I did for the class. I demo everyday in my workshops this one was an hour with a little touch up when I got home in the evening. I wasn't able to take process shots this time. I can talk and paint or I can talk and take photos while I paint, but it seems I can't talk and paint and take photos at the same time.

"Call of Cthulhu" is fantastic - I love the "venus flytrap" interpretation of the tentacle reaching out! Buffalo Soldier and the demo piece are great too.

Yeah man, Cthulu is sick. I like the "buffalo soldier", personally. All of your "fine art" is just fantastic man.

It's always good to see someone be a little looser. Thanks for sharing Dpaint!

EDIT: I'd personally like to see some of the Princess of Mars progress. How do you get those edges?

    Great Work!

I just checked out your landscape paintings from life... Don't beat yourself up! I think the struggle to accomplish what you want in a 4 hour sitting is part of what gives your images such life. You have to work fast and intuitively so it probably prevents your analytical mind from getting in the way and overworking the image. I love how you've captured the otherworldly nature of water... the ripply reflectivity and transparency and distortions of light that happen within it. It's something that I've always been fascinated by.

I like your fantasy pictures too... but the Princess of Mars one doesn't look as professional as your others. Something awkward about the human figures... maybe overworked, but also awkward posture on the princess. The setting looks underworked in comparison... the texture or detail... so there's a strange disconnect between the detailed figures and the fuzzy ground they stand on.

Just finished up some concept paintings for Zynga's Cityville. These were painted in photoshop from loose pencil roughs and provided to the modellers as templates.
