Updated the phalanx piece. I made a lot of much needed adjustments to the piece based one the feedback I received from the WIP section. Thanks to everyone who chimed in!
Sketchbook update: this stuff hardly feels like it's worth posting some times. But, it's probably a good idea to keep in the habit of posting as often as I can. It's anatomy week for me, so it's lots of back and forth between Vilppu, Bridgeman, and Rubins. Hopefully I will have some better looking and more improved studies to post before the week is out.
A couple human form studies. My anatomy is way off, but I am seeing the planes pretty well. I've also transitioned over to a mechanical pencil which I am LOVING. Such smooth rendering, and better control of my lines. Though, I do miss the messy and free feel of my carpenter pencil...I may return to it from time to time.
More anatomy stuff.
More anatomy.
Another anatomy/rendering study.
50 figures for the Spartan drawing group, plus some other mindless doodling. All of the figures are from imagination. They turned out pretty well (for me, anyways, haha...), especially when you compare them to any of my past gestural drawings (which were done from reference!).
Updated "The Citadel". I am not sure which of these 3 color schemes I like best...I really want the piece to "glow", and make the eyes physically feel the presence of whatever that glowing liquid may be.
New piece: Medivh's Observatory
Hi Nice stuff you have going on in here.

Here's a recent update. Reworked the Phalanx piece a bit more. I also worked my ass off these last few months to save up for a Cintiq 24HD. The thing is pretty much a dream to work on...not much else to add to that.
I'm incredibly focused right now on my drawing/painting; I'm in a really good frame of mind right now.
I'll also be getting out and doing some much anticipated Plein Air painting this next month.
Forgot to upload my pictures of the 24HD. I've zoomed in on the gamepad that I've velcroed to the Cintiq. My workflow is dependent on having a lot of keybinds/macros at the tips of my fingers, and the limited arrangement of buttons that were included with the Cintiq just weren't cutting it.
The gamepad is a Belkin Nostromos n52te. The thing works like a charm and I can't envision working without one anymore. Same goes for the Cintiq![]()
i am finished with The Citadel.
Here's a new magic card concept I was working on for a friend. He prints these out to make "alt art" magic cards that he plays with! It's pretty cool how he does it and makes it look legit; mostly only mana cards and token cards.
This one is for 3/3 green beast tokens. It's humanoid I know, but I still think he looks pretty beastly
Also, his anatomy is off in places (lol, face...), mostly the arms/shoulder area.
Spartan gestures and other random stuff.
random thoughts I had looking at your stuff..
You do a lot of form studies and thumbnails – that is good practice, keep it up!
You have a nice drawing ability, good at form & value.
Some of your work is really strong - #185 arabian guy is really nice. You don’t over-render stuff but are efficient, very good
Is that a signed Jim Carrey photo on your wall? Love him v.much.
I think the eyes & noses in #195/96 are excellent.
I like your citadel painting, its nice. I like the sketch better than the painting for the green magic card (like your sketching technique v.much)
How do you like the cintiq? I’ve wanted one for a long time, like everybody lol..
Nice sb! (thanks for leaving me feedback too, appreciate it!)
"Coastal Raiders"
A magic card I am working on.
Another update.
Some silhouettes from imagination.
Silhouettes and tree studies.
Something I'd suggest for your tree studies is to use a more cylindrical approach, or add some cross contours to show the form. When it's just the outer contours, it's easier to forget the forms of the tree. I was never a big fan of the cylinder approach, but it is helpful for a lot of people to use cylinders to shape the trees.
You've got a lot of great work here, I particularly love your compositional sketches. I think your silhouettes are suffering a little from lack of some squash-and-stretch. They're very angular, which can be cool, but they're lacking a push and pull between the shapes.
If you have the time, please stop by my sketchbook, Chock Full o'Nuts.
I would appreciate any advice or critiques.
DKHutcheson: thanks for the feedback!
I've got a TON of pencil sketches that I need to upload. In the meantime, here's a Sargent value study I did today in Photoshop.![]()
Big update. I finished out all the pages in my sketchbook. Time to get a new one.
Some good stuff in here, and some not so good stuff. Also, I don't have a scanner, so I have to take these with a camera; and I don't have time to really adjust any of the images one by one...so, some are sideways and uncropped. Oh well, more important things to be done.
Small sketch.
pencil stuff is looking sick! i think your colors are lacking some saturation so watch out for that anyways nice updates!
kevin_: thanks for checking back! I'll pay attention to my colors. I think James Gurney scared my "color senses" in his defense of using greys and of avoiding the "Fruit salad" look with over-saturated colorsI'll try to be a bit more bold.
Here's another floating orb light value study thingie.
Gesture/figure drawings. Most recent at the top, to the later ones at the bottom. I definitely see improvement from the old to the new.
Some gesture/anatomy studying.
