dude you are burning this thread up---> subscribing. way to go... we're going to be doing the CATL thing really soon! can't wait to see what you're up to this schoool year! what will we do without Special-K around?!?
j
gugg-the K-man will be back next quarter, he will be missed till then...
been moving into my dorms and school, so i havent had access to a scanner etc. etc. wont let this keep me down this year though. i should be posting normally again soon.....
heres a digi i have been playing around with on my friends comp, i would love some crits for it. i dont know how far i am going to take it, but theres still alot to be done.....
later.
Stars FTW.
retep:
hell yeah man--> looking good! here are a few crits on the awesome dino/reptilian dragon thing:
a couple of minor compositional things:
- seems like the trees that frame the composition are a little bit predictable and stylized.... Potentially they could give you a really nice art nouveau kind of framing effect, but right now that they're mirrored is really, really distracting to me.
- the dragon aspet..looks great compositionally. I'd say leave it as is and continue to rock it.
- the middle ground with the robe wearing guys i dunno... i wish the eye level were closer to the groiund... maybe at head level with the snakes or SLIGHTLY above... not as much perspective.
- tuft of leaves in the lower right??? seems like a haphazard compositional element.
k... hope that helps. thanks for the info about HHH, i wanted to call him but last time i kinda woke him up or something![]()
looks good mang--> somehow we gotta get together for some drawring. will be calllin you up.
gugg
hey gugg,
thanks for the crit man! i should be working on the piece again soon. i was actually thinking about bringing the lizard guys up to eye level a little more. yeah, those foreground leaves were really bothering me. the lizard gu up front should be enough, but i might just take him out as well. dunno.
im in the process of getting a new number for my cell, ill give you a call as soon as i get it.
later.

cool man... it's just, the lizard hunchback guys have so much potential i think. really if you played them up it would intensify the overall impact of that gigantic a$$ dragon in the background. also... i was thinking that a change of perspective on that burning cauldron would help things immensely... what if in looking into this scene we could see burning embers lighting out into the congregated reptilian group? that would cast some ed wood style b-movie shadow upward lighting onto the visage of the dragon, which would be a little difficult to execute, but would be so impressive to see done right![]()
Yeah... give me a call. actually tonight while i was driving i called your old number and some dude answered, that didn't sound like you:
"hey, ahh, is retep there?"
"uhh... ok. He doesn't have this number anymore."
"ahh... alrighty. thanks!"
click.
hehe
gugg
This is great stuff mate!
Why no stars?edit:nevermind about the stars hehe
http://www.spatsart.com/ - blog
I'm jealous of your stars.
Nice work. Good, various study. Keep widening it.
Retep still doesn't have a cell because he is a gigantic choad-monger.
Reactions to dragon composition: The lines of sight are all pointing to that fire, plus it's the only warm element in the comp so it becomes the focal point, but I would assume that dragon they seem to be worshipping should be the focus. Get rid of the symetrical trees and leaf that's supposed to balance the guy on the left, put another guy there instead. The guy's head peaking out at the bottom doesn't seem to be doing anything either. Do some studies of churches and temples, laying on the steps doesn't seem fitting for a dragon god. Light between trees should be toned down.
Sketchbook
"Beliefs are rules for action"
"Knowledge is proven in action."
"It's use is it's meaning."
guggenmaneuve- thanks for the crit. i havent really done anything with the dragon image, but i did throw another version together focusing on the lizards. ill post it soon.
Spats- thanks

wow peter, some really impressive stuff you are dropping here! So i put on my 3D glasses and this really jumped off of the page at me. yeah, the digital camera isn't ideal, but at least you are posting stuff.
def the self portrait is the so-calledGLEAMING ZENITH
of this update. seems like the face is dead on, and the rendering is nice and thorough. one crit i'd like to make is that...maybe the background should flatten out a little more. right now the marks that you are making that circle your head are somewhat evident, which ruins the foreground + background depth thing slightly. "ruins slightly" i guess is kind of an oxymoron
, i hope it's not too confounding of a criticism.
AND --> I guess you probably got my email about the CATL Sketch Group trip to fernbank to see the imperial rome exhibit on saturday the 28th--> lemme know if you (maybe even "you guys") are down and i could stop by and pick yall up if you are sans-automobile. Should be a lot of fun, it looks like a lot of new people will be showing up, so we may even break the 20 ARTISTS mark with any luck. Then we'll start a gang and go flip some automobiles at a shopping center, just to get good under-the-car reference views. Lemme know if you're down, k? it promises to be an entire day filled with UNSANE sketching debauchery. maybe even that blue-kollared-rake-brushed-emo-haired-freak from macon will make it up. which... actually he's going to be in town this saturday and several of us are getting together... hopefully we'll all be able to draw together for a little bit
"uhh... are you guys in some kind of class together?"
"I knew someone who drew once"
guggpld:
thanks for the support gugg. i see what you mean about the foreground + background relationship, its really bothering me now. when i geTIT back ill flatten it out so its all one value, or have it a bit darker by my shoulders and fade out.
im really disapointed i didnt get to go to any CATL meetings. this last quarter really kicked my ass, next quarter i will hopefully be more prepared and have more extra time. how did that 24-hour sketchbook hoopla go down??
heres an illustration project, human animal mix... didnt have a scanner when i had it so i had to settle with another shyty pic.
close up...
i threw this website together for a project. the first website ive ever made. hopefully i can get a real portfolio site planned out and built over break. some crits would be great.
http://studentpages.scad.edu/~prusse20/
later.
Neat idea having the figure on the left in your portfolio...I might put a head and legs on it so that it reads instantly.
As for other crits...depends what you want to do as an artist! Show us the best of what YOU want to do. You could put a few life drawing pieces in there to show your traditional knowledge as well.

smash- i never got any of those creature designs, still waiting for them...
matsign-thanks
craig- i checked out your lobster giraffe, its awesome. i can't believe thats your first digital piece.
so heres a pitiful update from my toned sketchbook. i have to pick and choose from alot of images(there's honestly not much good to choose from). there will be tons more to come now that i have scanner access again (i have an entire sketchbook i finished since last time i posted). chronology from sketchbook to sketchbook is going to be all out of whack since i work in all of them simultaneously, but as long as i am getting it posted im happy.
begin...
i was looking at way too much Gary baseman
unfortunately one of the only real concept drawings i've done lately
concept for a painting i never completed
working on narrative
fabric study
went to a figure drawing session the other night, i hadn't been in ages. my hands feel like they have rusted over.
thats all from my toned sketchbook.
i will try to update the rest asap.
finish.

Here are some drawings from a very small sketchbook i have, i wanted to experiment alot with different styles and ideas. Again i am picking and choosing from many pages, and i still have more to update from it.
I was looking at too much Renaissance imagery
...more updates coming soon...
heres some more finishing up the small sketchbook...
never finished this one. there was supposed to be balls of legs in the background, and i was planning on making a larger one.
i posted this color study because it was one of the original color studies that got me playing with color alot more.
painting on sandpaper
more updates as promised, coming soon.
awesome work man!!!
i love the new style! fresh!!!
ill see if i can post some of my new sketchs soon
aight man
miss you
gay.
craiggy
craig-thanks man, i'm looking forward to an update!
heres just a couple more...
this one has two layers, the image of the three figures is behind this one. the circle in his chest is the cut out.
blah blah
All of these images are from an entirely new and completed sketchbook. i am not scanning the majority of it, actually, the first image i scanned is almost halfway through the sketchbook.
here are a bunch of Don Quixote studies i did, trying to make an illustration...
i decided to make a larger version of this one, which i will post soon.
more from this sketchbook soon...
i swear it gets better.
Last edited by RETEP; January 31st, 2009 at 11:52 AM.
