    Applecheeks' rosy Sketchbook

    Hiya! I'm Nana and have been around for a while but figured it's time to start one of these.

    I started drawing because of manga but found my passion for art dwindling after a few years when I stopped improving. For the last few years it has been re-fuelled by an increased awareness and appreciation of all kinds of great art...
    At the moment I'm collaborating on a comic with a writer which hopefully will have some sketches show up in this thread.

    My goals are just to learn how to draw, paint and think and hopefully discover what I really want to do with my art in the process.

    The stuff that's tagged Ghost Hunter was done for a concept art course held by Leo Sandberg at the University of Gotland this summer. Leo's a great guy and he shared some great stuff on that course. It helped me get a better idea of what being a concept artist really entails... and how far I've got to go.

    @DesignNoob: Cheers! The colour studies still don't compare to the actual movie... hitting the right colours is hard. X/

    Caricature done for Bobby Chiu's contest held in conjunction with his interview with artist caricature Jason Seiler tomorrow. More info for those who don't know what this is about.
    Have been thinking about earning some extra cash over Christmas by doing caricatures on the street but probably not confident/quick enough for that yet.

    PS: the best way to get quicker and more confident is by doing, right? I say go for it. What's the worst that can happen if you go to slow and it would be great practice. <.< but that's just my thoughts on it.

    I just wanted to say that your black and white contour drawing of the girl on all fours (Leeds thought bubble?) is a really strong pose and you should illustrate or finish something with that one.

    I also like the little swirls of lines instead of hatching... I should try that.

    They all look fantastic. But, on the very first picture of the manga girl, her eyelashes are a bit ridiculous, in that they really look like eyebrows. Fix that, because it just doesn't look right. Everything else is absolutely golden.

    Thanks for the comments!

    @GETBUCK: Haha thanks!

    @DHTenshi: Thanks!

    @SmoteyMote: I love drawing dynamic gestures. Been inspired by Disney on that.

    @ColorExcursion: Cheers!

    @MoKhi: Very true! A good way to try it out without having to feel performance anxiety might be to do it for free first... Hmm one of these days.

    @witcrack: Thank you!

    @DesignNoob: Cheers mate!

    @JinzouTamashii: Haha thanks for the kick in the bum! I need to get into the habit of using this thing more often.

    @gabs: I use a Pilot rollerball ink pen for my sketchbook. It forces you to be more decisive with your strokes which is good when you're out and about since you don't always have a lot of time to finish a sketch.

    @OmertA: Haha glad you like!

    @splintercannon: Yay!

    @andres333: Thanks!

    @Nrx: I was there for the Thoughtbubble festival in November. No I'm not a student at Anglia Ruskin. I did go to one of their open days, but they seem to suffer the same lack of substance that you see in most art courses today.

    @FightingSeraph: Yeah!

    @Fein: Thanks! Unfortunately it's already been printed... but I think you're right. I will watch out for that in the future.

    @poetry man: Lol hope that's not necessarily a bad thing. XD

    @Traveler: Thanks man!

    Sorry for the long hiatus, I'm not used to using this thing just yet. I'm really excited about The Art Department and just bought a pass to the Discovery program. Really can't wait to see that happening!

    A few tentative painting practices.
    I've long been very unsure about how to approach colour. Yesterday I tried a different approach than normal and blocked in some dark shapes. Working from dark to light instead of the other way around and gave a surprisingly good effect (the head sketch).
    Today I decided to take the same approach but on a whole figure. I had to do a line drawing to work out the anatomical problems but after that it was pretty much the same process as the first sketch. I just tried to think about what surfaces the light was striking and the body started taking shape.
    I'm really quite confused about where to go from here though... every step up to this point has been a go-by-feel approach and sometimes I'm not sure if I'm making things better or worse. I don't know until I look back and compare with the previous step. Very confusing...
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    The first one is a drawing I did for a guy who wants to make an online LOTR RPG. It's my first time tackling Tolkien and Gandalf. Seeing as he's a traveller I imagined him sitting down for a rest on a tree stump somewhere on one of his long journeys.
    The second one is a self portrait drawn with a 5B graphite pencil.
