    ROUND #178:: CHOW/IDW CROSSOVER :: 2706 AD Jousting

    DESCRIPTION

    CHOW/IDW CROSSOVER!

    2706 AD Jousting

The year is 2706 AD and the most popular sport in the solar system (and near by extra-solar outposts) is a bizarre revived form of jousting. The rules? Participants ride STEEDs, an invention of Hastilidium Inc, to mimic (and improve) horseback riding in zero and near-zero gravity. They later created the 'earthSTEED' that could be adjusted to any planetary body's gravity, but the zero-gravity version of the game is still the most popular one. On the back of their STEEDs they ride across a long narrow strip called the 'plane' which can be any surface, or indeed no surface at all, as long as the borders and middle line are clearly marked. They ride towards each other with lances (newly redesigned for maximum efficiency and awesome-looking-ness) and attempt to knock one another off their STEEDs. Injuries are uncommon, but do happen.

Participating in the games is very expensive but the pay off is often much greater than the investment. Jousters are the most famous faces in the solar system, more recognizable than politicians or any other form of entertainment, and often make a side-income by doing advertisements or lobbying for particular candidates for government. Jousters have even been known to join government themselves, and are often very successful, whether or not they are actually any good at their job.

Usually Jousters are either individuals with large fortunes or that come from rich families, or charismatic and talented young people that are 'sponsored' by a corporation. Every entrant wears a 'shield', complete with heraldry, and it is here that the sponsoring companies incorporate their logos in order to advertise. (Only one company per jouster.)

    CHOW REQUIREMENTS.

    - Design a Jouster, including armour and heraldry
    - You may, but are not require, to design the Lance and the STEED

    IDW REQUIREMENTS
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...02#post2507202

    - Design the STEED and the Lance for a particular participant
    - you may also include the Jouster

    NOTE

As you can see by the requirements, as long as you include the jouster, heraldry, STEED and Lance, you may submit one image to both contests.

Some links to help you :

    ------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?

    --------------------

    SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
    3: Use the Standard format (Below);

PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:

    Chow##_Nickname

2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
    3: Good luck to all.

Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

    ON GETTING TO POLL
    -------------------------
    NEW ROUND RULE: WIPS PLEASE!
    -------------------------
    SUBMISSION FORMAT REMINDER

PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!

    ---

Quick Check: Have You Submitted Your Chow Properly?

    - is it named correctly? (ie, "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg")
    - has it been uploaded using the attachment editor?
    - have you also uploaded or linked to your wips?
    - have you followed the brief?

    Good luck!

Here's my final effort, and some more wips. There's a bit of background in the other thread, am pretty happy with how it turned out despite grappling with trying to include the shield without hiding a lot of the character. I'm pleased with the compromise. I won't labour over the processes or choices I made, just to say it was driven by my interest in cyborg tech. Oh, and an unhealthy obssession with Pamela that's been going for 20years or so.

Had fun during the process, but kind of bummed at the lack of feedback (which I need to improve).

    Oh well, next time.

As a daughter of Minister of Martian Affairs Marcus Thompson, Sam has always had easy access to experimental military tech. Developed by former lightbulbs, kitchen-gear and televisions producing company Philips's experimental Philips Nano division, Sam's suit is a prime example of some skilled engineering.
Her suit fits like normal racing outfit, only slightly thicker than normal cloth. It hardens on kinetic impact (like Batman's cape does while being electrified) which protects her from harm while keeping her extremely mobile and able to dodge most attacks with ease.
It's still vulnerable to cutting or stabbing weaponry (that's why the army uses a thicker but less mobile variant of the suit) but Jousts have had their points dulled since the incident of 2681...

so this is it... my first chow entry.

I decided to keep a kind of "medievalness" in the way the armor is looking.
Although I didn´t use any refs for the picture playing "Hellgate London" a few
years ago was quite a nice inspiration for my entry.

first time doing a chow. lots of fun was had

Target wasn't doing too well with their sponsored jousters, mainly because of their logo. They couldn't justify doing something as drastic as a logo change after almost 1,000 years of existence simply because they couldn't place top 10 in the tournaments. Their prayers were answered when one of their talent scouts found a big Mongolian dude named Larry Meeker working as a bouncer in one of the seedier watering holes. The talent scout was being rowdy so Larry tossed him out on his ass. The scout was in a rather foul mood so he hurried to his car and floored it towards Larry. Unbelievably the car crumpled in and Larry was left standing with only a minor bruise on his thigh. Now he is one of the most successful jousters of all, even though he has the highest percentage of being hit in the league. He received the honors of knighthood in 2704 and now goes by Sir Larry the Large.

ran out of time so I left the character in B&W.

The KFC branding was only going to be temporary but again I left myself to little time.

It was a fun chow to do though. I'll colour the character in my sketchbook later on.

I went for something post-apocaliptic. This Jouster is from a team called "Four Horseman", he is called "Death". (the other 3 are famine, war and pestilence)

He is bio-engineered, not an undead.

The word ‘anarchy’ comes from the ancient Greek αναρχία in which αν meant ‘without’ and αρχία meant first a military ‘leader’ and then ‘ruler’. Anarchist society is one ‘without rulers’: a classless, non-hierarchical society.

my GE-sponsored jouster. i was trying for something austere.

also, i also got lazy and skipped the steed altogether. i might include one in the harem round to make up for it.

Antares, the finest zero-gravity jouster to ever live. He was adopted by the State at an early age and has been training under the sponsorship of REDstar, the system's primary fusion energy corporation. His origins (and real name) are unknown, but the State and REDstar have given him opportunities most other orphans never know. All he needs to do is win one last match and his contract is up. 2706 will be his defining year.

    Heinrich Kaiser

Born amidst the chaos and violence of the underslums of New Berlin, Heinrich Kaiser rose to fame first as a null-gravity pit gladiator and later as a mercenary in the Colony Wars of Io.

Now as the "Black Knight" of BitterBräu Beer, Heinrich boasts an impressive professional jousting record and seeks the fame and fortune that only a champion can achieve.

BiiterBräu Beer, the beer of true champions!!!

Here's mine. I was hoping to get a character portrait in as well, sorta like a spot-light window on television with statistics next to it, but something came up and I couldn't put in the extra hours.

Dean "Basher" Kelly from Taree New South Wales, the oldest jouster in the league. Not known for any fanciful display of strategy or dexterous manoeuvring, no, only an uncanny ability to endure physical punishment and taste for dishing it out. This unsavoury champion usually rides dangerously close to the Jousting Federations rules, so it comes as no surprise that he is also the jouster with the most cumulated yellow cards.

Basher has only lost one bout in his 28 year career. One loss against Johnny Brady who moved on to win the champion's title that season. The following year Brady faced the "Basher" once more, but this duel came to a tragic end : as Dean's lance scored a hit, Johnny's thoracic cage was pulverised, sending his head flying off into deep space. The incident was written off as an accident since a malfunctioning graviton motivator was later discovered in Basher's lance. Everyone was happy in the end as Johnny's sponsors were well compensated for their loss.
