    yo dagger dudes and ladydudes. Here's my study from this morning after hastily assembling a shadow box from a cardboard box.

    I mentioned the shadow box since I started doing a study like this yesterday with my desk lamp as the primary light source, but the sun had already risen and I was getting ambient light through the curtains. More complicated than I would have wanted it.

    Does anybody have experience with shadow boxes? I wonder if I should paint the inside black.

    It's been a long time since I've done still life work and I've never done them digitally, so I'm looking forward to doing more as the weeks come. It's still super rough (after about an hour) and I would have liked to do more but I needed to get to work. Something is better than nothing though.

    I was having trouble seeing cool shadows on the fruit and the cup (maybe because the cardboard box brown was reflecting back onto those surfaces). I'll experiment with a black box or a cool tone piece of paper behind the objects.

    Undeadartist - when doing glass studies I'd recommend placing the glass objects near other things to reflect off of. Glass on its own is difficult to render, but if you have a colorful piece of fruit nearby with a good light source the reflected color will help give the glass forms for you to observe.

    The idea of involving different surfaces in a still life (glass, ceramic, metal, organic) is they all reflect light off of each other in interesting ways.

    Yo daggers, I'm a bit late to the party and sadly my mac partition had an :oops" a while back. So here's the images from the studies not that I had time and that the partition recovered.

    I think I'll imitate Lowkey and list some things I noticed / learned during the process. I think someone can always soaked up some information:

    (1) Reflection inside a Reflection (the ball reflected the point of light that reflected on the edge of the plate);
    (2)Light and color bouncing everywhere (have not noticed how it happens for real);
    (3) I still feel difficulty in finishing within the borders;
    (4) Problems to put flaws (notches, holes) on the surfaces that is already rendered;

    Well, the interesting thing is that if I keep doing one of these studies a week, I will definitely improve. That is a fact. Keep going Daggers!

    Yeah nothing is really straight black. 100% opacity set to pen pressure or turn off pressure for blocking in or flats. Sometimes it is a good exercise to use full opacity and try to find the correct tones without blending or building it up.

    Do people have all the brushes they need? I have a few folders of everyone's collections I have found over the last year if anybody wants to try new ones.

    Attempting a more complicated scene, going to work more on it tomorrow. Refractions in the glass change even with just a few millimeters of head movement, very annoying! But it helps me know where I should keep my head positioned so that's good I guess.

    Also, awesome work guys! I think I'm improving already, hope you are too!

    I decided to take my drawing know-how from earlier and incorporate it into some characters for my Schoolism assignment. Here is one:

    I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I felt I incorporated a lot of what I learned.

    Unfortunately, even though usually I don't have as much problems with the female form, my girl came out like a wonky mess:

    I can't wait to do some girl studies with the CRIMSON DAGGERS! I might do some tomorrow morning before taking another crack at this female character.

    As I promised (myself): another still-life.
    At the beginning I tried to work faster than the other time. But I failed. I did'nt draw any forms before painting this time - all I wanted was painting shapes like the citron. But then I got lost again in painting details (the cup)... and then I started painting details on the tea pot. And now it's 0.00 a.m. and I stopped.

    I realized that I tend to choose colours which are to low saturated and bright. In a still-life this isn't a big problem because I can correct my choice: in comparison with the reality I can see my false estimation. But when I draw from memory, there is no real colour reference. Maybe I should do still-lifes from memory to avoid this danger?

    PS: I work in painter and I use mainly the gouache, the airbrush and the mixing tool. Most brushes are for photoshop, aren't they?

    Hey guysss sorry I'm so late posting this. Still have one from yesterday on the other comp to post.

    I didn't finish this cause I had to go to an art lecture straight after, and then dad came home and I needed to clear off his desk for a bit. SAI paint tool, about 1 1/2 hours.
    Meh. Some amythest and an ammonite that I got in Weymouth. Something different.

    Sorry for the crappy jpg file, this computer seems to save everything funny. I'd rather upload something than nothing but this really looks terrible. I'll replace it with a nicer version at some point I guess. Hmm. I'll upload some other stuff from my own comp later or tomorrow.
