I'm a freelance 3d artist/concept artist located in germany. the last years i spent a lot on learning know how and technic for doing animated features.. but i've always had a fable for drawing and paintin' .

i would love to get some serious and honest CC about my stuff, and perhaps some tips to improve, or anything.

Help me improve!

hey thanks guys,

the problem i currently have is, that my first sketches for those poses look pretty ugly. I need time and layers to work out overlapping and correct foreshortning.. if i try this on paper.. i can't get it to work like the upper drawings. dunno, if to go more for fast sketches.. or just learn and work out poses to digg everything and the rest will eventually come, even on paper?

to better show, what i mean and how i work..

heres a WIP layed out. i'm currently struggeling with a lean back postion, viewn from a bit deep under..which i thought should be easy, well hmm , this is just 5 minutes stuff.. i draw alot of this , but most time it directly goes to the dump, but i'm sure if i'll work more on this it'll get better..

had to do some other stuff last week.. did some doodles on friday but turned out terribly..

today and yesterday i switched back to painting and studied some photos for better understanding of light, shadow and color...

the landscape i did today is from a foto reference, and done in about 3-4 hours.. the horse is some 2 weeks old, a painting for a girlfriend.. took about 20 hours..

Burned up my scanning device begining of the week, the anatomy studies from bridgman, are all on paper. Maybe I can scan stuff later, when I'm going to my girl friends home. So heres just small digital things i did the last weeks .. I've been more onto speed things also.. but should also do some longer and not as fast "sketches" to really understand.. dunno...

The only drawing thing studied on this following is the small thor marvel picture.. the Rest is from head.. as always.. until now :p

The color stuff is all photo referenced. done in 40 minutes on timer

to learn color better.

Hi

I really like your traditional and digital stuff, its seldom you find someone who is at the same level with both.
Some nitpicks for you to learn form:
On the last one a lot more red of the sky should reflect in the guys armor and try adding more drama with a cape perhaps?
I love the armor study. I should do one of those.
I really like your enviros, but I would suggest adding subtle unusal colurs you wouldn't think about first. That will add a lot to the realism. Try studying form fotos on the internet.

oh big thx janos.. i showed this thing to a friend today and he told me that I'd really need to go more into photo studies again. Do 100s and then try and come back to painting color from imagination.

Then I'd have a problem less and could focus more on lighting and compostion. Well guess he's right. As for today I struggled long time, how i'd form out the Armor. But whats the deal, when the whole coloring isn't fitting in the end end else..

Sure, It isn't bad.. but i want to get good

but i don't know yet if i want to got for drawing or painting i like both. And I'm attracted by creating characters... which i did only 3d the last years with some 2-3 hour sketching before

Zeus & Jonas: I think i could struggle through this warrior thing, but as I got told, stop and study .. then come back.. will follow this..

kay back to colors, and the last for today.. 20 minutes just focusing on color..

also figure my samsung 226bw is very bad for painting,.. viewing angle is a horror .. have to tilt up and down with the head to percieve and guess every color from the picture.. and than the face looks completly different..

should get some money and buy a new one...

Its nice to see a study as soon as now. I like how you are coming along, though because your subject is a very shopped modelfoto I fear it is even harder to achieve a nice realistic finish.
I would try searching for pictures were the lightsource is directional and clear, so that you can study how colour reacts to light.
I myslef chose modelpics over everyday pictures and I should also change that, so how about we both try to study a "normal" foto?
I suggest you still finish this one up a little at least. The lips esp but also the skin need to be warmer, so try adding more yellows and oranges.

hm girlfriend had some trouble with her car today.. didn't get the whole day, but some studies at least..

what i find interesing is, that when using no opacity and quirks like brush dynamics, i get the colors faster.. could blend afterwards like i did with the indian or pacistani..

but for my own images that would be a strange workflow, i think.. but blending at same time always makes me focus on blending and other stuff , but not on colors..

the model face pics, which have all soft and bright colors is a pain to have it look lively..

need more mileage

Aha more studies, thats good!
I like how you are coming along. One major point though is that your eyes look dead, which is basically due to the lack of details in them. If you only want to learn the colours you might forget about it, but I wouldn't. Try copying them as exact as possible. For insatance you are missing the little red dot at the inner eye-corner in all of them.
In the last one, the lips could be warmer.

hehe, thx Janos! Yeah it was all about color.. But I did a face study for about 3-4 hours on thursday, which I will upload tomorrow, where i focused more on all "details", and the eyes also. Still not perfect, but with this last study I understood colors of the face and blending stuff alot better. And its a bit more lifely.

My biggest problem at the moment is my TFT, it has a TN panel and a real bad vertical viewpoint. In most of the stuff imo, I have problems telling which exact saturation and or color something has, as it always changes, hehe. Nevertheless practice is practice.

On Friday i watched some color theory DVDs and had only time for 2 more studies of streets. I'll keep all of this going

May I ask to which universities you applied in germany and what you put in your portfolio? I am about to finish my civil service and would like to start art school in winter, but I "steh total auf'm Schlauch" when it comes to which Unis might be right for me and how to put together my portfolio.

I'm looking forward to seeing your detailed study!

so here it comes, the longer face study. Only face and half of the beard is done.. Hair on top is a mess, ear 's missing.. Eyes look still dead and theres a lot of red an' brown missing in the face.. don't know how to blend that yet.. Still painting on only one layer, should use more "manipulation" to get what i want...

but.. one after another.. searching for new photos now.. but stopping with faces for the moment

hm, this time i managed to have it free and "flowing", that was a least my feeling while drawing.. but look at the front arm, the torso and the right leg..
spine broken hrhr... muaha and the hand *ashamed*

everything seems odd.. primary example how i get stuck on ideas and then leave it cause i can't handle the anatomy... while rolling with the flow.. other case around when constructing, i don't have a feeling of flow really

I try to do the 20 min a day thing too, but my sketches never seem to look that good.. or the time goes at 20 min and I'm not done yet!

Doing both structured anatomy and flowing sketches is a real pain in the ass, maybe blending both methods in your own personal way could unlock something interesting.

yeah, this is what i'm aiming for mokuu, both combined, practice will hopefully bring that..

joyproject: its actually more than 20 minutes.. around 40, i think, two 20 minute ones, first rough and vage lines and then defining details

but can't figure out the legs and arms in this deep foreshortning..

got a bad headache today.. just 3 small color studies (40mins again), searching for images is also very time consuming.. was doing posemaniacs stuff after, very short and longer.. but can't concentrate.. think i'll get a nap, maybe it gets better..

doing stuff from life would be good too, i guess.. humm..

Ahhh
I should have started with posemaniacs as well. For 60 secs these are very good. The proportions are great already.
I also really like the last enviro study you did. A nice simplified version of the foto. You picked the right forms and shapes to describe the picture's objects. And you know what? I'm sure that the times when you have to step out of your comfort zone help you improve a lot fater. So keep it up.

kay i'm back up again, made a schedule for next week, so that i study more organized and varied. hope that works out..

janos: yeah, the posemaniacs would be a nice little addition to the life drawing session your about to start..
