continuing repin study, i realize there's too many figures in it, so i'll just attempt to render 2 figures in it hehe... also some hand studies, and some random character i made up (i need to practice drawing feet lol)

I think this idea is spot on.
It works differently for everyone, but when I do a study from something I find interesting, I try and gather as much information about color, values, edges, proportions, and composition. Then I try and simplify what I see into economical brush marks. After I do the study--prob the next day--I try to create something similar. So if I drew a face with a certain value range/colors/etc. I try and do something similar from imagination the next day. I think that's a good way to retain what I learn from the study.
Btw your pencils are pretty good! They seem confidant and not messy. On this one, I think you could define how the shadowed areas meet the light i.e. how soft/sharp/abrupt the edge is. Maybe using the side of the pencil for that.
Keep up the good work!
@YihyoungLi: thanks Yihyoung. I find your way of studying a very good way to grasp things, I do that as well but I find myself trying different approaches to my studies. Let's keep improving!

Nice work in here man, your hands up near the top are awesome! Your paintings are a little lacking in comparison though, you might want to hit up doing some more color studies. Like on the goblin dude, you need to think of the difference in saturation between light and shade, as well as value. Right now the shadows are too desaturated, and too dark in places, like in between the pecs. Keep working though, you're doing good stuff!
Cheers
you really grow from first page..thats cool, congrats =)

nice dude... can clearly see the improvement... although it feels like ur better digitally...anyways nice work... cheers!
Nice updates teapo!! Love the hand studies in post#301. They show a very good understanding of proportion and the line quality is excellent. Looking forward to seeing the goblin finished, but just be careful with his mouth. Keep up the good work my friend.
@cdejong: thanks cdejong. really appreciate your feedback, it was very helpful and i'll be sure to keep it in mind for the future. :3
@Verehin: thanks Verehin. glad that the changes are noticeable.
@syk3: really syk3? haha well thank you, but I think my pencil drawings are looking better than my digitals at the moment. i'm making small progress though on digital :3
@Turbosnail: thank you Turbosnail! I'll get around to finishing the goblin :3 and we'll see about his mouth lulz

rough armor study
Does anyone know how to calibrate monitors? I tried looking it up, but it seems confusing lol. Just curious because I may have to calibrate mine, when I compare my drawing/painting in photoshop to google chrome browser, there's a big difference. The picture(s) always seem darker in photoshop and when I open it in the browser, it appears lighter than it actually is. xD

Armor study is looking good. You'll wanna think about pushing your contrast though, in values and in strong edges between values, thats how shiny stuff looks so shiny!
With regards to your moniter. There are website where you can calibrate your moniter. Its normally a series of tests where u adjust your moniters settings to their optimum. Ultimately though, there will still be a difference, because everyones moniter is different. The whole web-browser issue is something different i believe. I think its to do with how you save the file and the colour management/profile thats used, theres the whole 'save-for-web' options. Maybe u just need to find the right saving options.
Keep up the work, hope i helped a little![]()
man i the quality of work here is great. i really enjoy your comic styled sketches. your studies are excellent, it really looks like you have a great ability to comprehend what you are studying and you take advantage of that understanding. i don't know if that makes any sense, but often when im doing studies i have a hard time with approaching it rationally and often feel like im just trying to copy what's in front of me. i also really like the skeleton studies that you do. they look very helpful. i may try some of them myself. all in all your pencil work is really strong and your rendering in photoshop is also good though you seem to doubt your ability there. keep cracking away at the painting because that is improving by leaps and bounds as well. i wish i could offer some helpful critique but you are far advanced over me and i wouldn't even know how to help. thanks for visiting my sketchbook by the way and thanks for the help and advice!
I like your pencil works, they are very good, and, keep it!
@PHATandy: Thanks PHATandy. You're right about shiny things looking shiny with the strong edges between values. I'll have to keep that in mind and study more metallic objects from life :3 I'll also look into those websites *googles*
@PermaN00b: Thank you for the kind words PermaN00b! I try to study more and more to boost my study quota (slowly getting there). Regarding your study approach, you're right on track with copying what's in front of you, just try to understand why things the way they are as you copy and of course afterwards, draw from memory/implement the study to a drawing from imagination. I'll keep tackling the digitals as you say, it is one of my weak points atm xD.
@LAL: thank you LAL. Nice name btw :3
almost forgot about MMA studies that PHATandy has reminded me of when I took a look @ his sb (^-^d)

Where do you find photo reference to do your anatomy studies? I like the progress you're making. Some of your paintings look a little too blobby though. As if there are blobs of paint there and they aren't really defined shapes. I sometimes have that issue too. I think to get better line quality try drawing lightly first and then gradually get darker. I know it's hard sometimes because when you get frustrated, you make darker lines. At least that's what happens with me. With your last anatomy study of the girl on the staircase, there are some odd things going on with the face. I would do a finished line drawing before you start painting. I think that'll def help you because you won't have to think about the anatomy and proportions while you paint. Hope that helps.
