Seeking Mentor - Environmental Concept Design Basics

    Greeetings,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask.... looks like it..... but I really need help.
I do have an understanding of color theory - took a class on it, watched the hell out of the Practical Light and Color DVD, and pretty much every tutorial I read/watch outside of figure drawing (sick of figure drawing really though I'm still doing it) only talks about how light works and rendering effectively with it.

What I don't get is the things I need to think about when designing an environmrent - ideas such as what makes a successful environment concept art, general rule when coming up with ideas, etc.

I can try going by instincts, but I just needed some rules or conventions to fall back on.

    Thanks^^

I'm not one to talk, but that tree isn't very unique. Also it's right smack in the middle. A good environment contains multiple points of interest. Also, generally you would only come up with concepts for things that you can't easily illustrate without one.

No offense in any way (if you might have taken offense)
Also sorry if I couldn't help, I'm learning too

There are a lot of great gnomon dvds on environment design. Feng Zhu's 'Fundamentals of Shot Design for Environments' sounds like exactly what you're after. Also Ryan church's DVDs are very good.

DVDs are fine…all great stuff. but when you boil it down, every Idea, however remotly that may appear, has its roots in "the real world"

in other words, for a start, look out of the window and draw!
