My favorite is the hadrosaur in #13. That looks like a relative of Corythosaurus.

trexmaster: I used various hadrosaurs as a reference so it could well have been .

ParanoiaArtist: I'm 19 myself and I've always enjoyed pokémon. It's what got me started on drawing and I will never forget about them little guys! Granted they got a little overboard with the amount of them and the series have got rather boring and repetitive, but the first series of pokémon still make me feel happy inside haha.

Hmm had a bit of a slow day today. I've done only two 'sketches', both took me longer than they should have (the first about two hours, the second to and a half). I couldn't seem to focus very well.

Again, neither of these two designs are mine. The first is a wind spirit from the game called Aion, I used a screen shot as a reference. The second is a 'fey' dragon designed by a writer who wanted me to try and depict it. The wing structure is supposed to be a mixture of bat and butterfly.

I also discovered that a simple gradient could make the sketch look just a little more interesting.

It's not much but, I've done something at least.

There are western (European) and eastern (Asian) dragons, which led me to wondering what an American dragon would look like. And so, McDragon was born.

(actually I just wanted to draw a random fat dragon and found the idea of it being American fairly amusing)

It's been a long time since my last update here. A bit too long, even, I'm afraid I've been distracted by some personal projects, some of which are posted below.

    WIP:

"The Guide", a quick concept (indeed the same critter as seen above) which will probably change a lot still.

Another chaos pic I'm working on (the first I did can be seen in my first post):

Some studies of a hovercraft-animal, for last week's COW. Didn't get to making a finished piece, but the sketches and studies were still fun to do.

And some dragon portraits of a project which I started ages ago (none of the characters are my own). These pictures are a bit older already but still worth showing.

And just to tick off a few avatar fans.

It's not much, but I thought I'd share. Some single-layer colour practise and another concept for that game I'm trying to design.

Eiki: Thank you . I'll definitely keep it up.

A bit of art therapy for today. I've been trying to capture Bryan Adams' "Sound the Bugle" through my art a few times before but never really managed to do so. Up until now I guess . I'm aware that the paw underneath her head looks wonky, I attempted to fix it a bit.

Oh, the two dragon heads are bird-based . The fire one being a cardinal bird, the ice one being a crane bird.

Cool! found you at DA aswell. Heck Pokemon are awesome the anime is lame nowadays but I miss the good old gameboy days. I had dreams of becoming a Pokemon master....

Your lines are really strong, nice and clean. Would be cool to see some more colours from you, I think that's your weak point. Also more people. It's good to see some studies there aswell

Everything is coming along nicely. Keep at it! It's probably already been said but you should make sure to do continuing studies from real animals. That will give you the necessary mental library of form and function to create whatever you want from imagination and have it be convincing.

The other thing I can suggest is to really work on creating instantly readable silhouettes. It looks like your doing a pretty good job but give them a little more thought, especially in the initial sketch or pose phase and I think it will really help.

Quick CHEATER TRICK: duplicate your finished image, blur it and then erase this blurred layer where you want the focus to be. Ideally you should think of this bluriness of edges while you paint and do them the right way by blending shapes one into the other, but try to experiment like this for now.
Grab the composition video. It's the single most valuable thing guys at Massive Black did to this point

You have some really awesome animal drawings! I enjoyed the pokemon ones, I think it would be neat to see them in a realistic manner, live action movie anyone? You also have a really nice sense of structure, form, and animal anatomy so your work is very believable.

Do you mind if I ask how you did the scales on the Dragon in post #45? I've been trying to find better ways to render elements like that and am interested in how you went around doing it.

One thing I'd really like to see is some of your creatures rendered really realistically, I think they would look sick.

Anyways good work again and I hope to see more in the future!

Holy cow, I could just stare at your linework all day long...

Also, since you appear to be a "dino-enthusiast", I was curious if you heard about this...it turns out Triceratops and Torosaurus may actually be the same animal...

Are Torosaurus and Triceratops one and the same?

A rare horned dinosaur known as Torosaurus may not be a distinct species, after all, according to a presentation given Friday at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Bristol, England.

Researchers have long recognized similarities between Torosaurus and Triceratops, the main distinctions being that Torosaurus is larger and has an expanded frill at the rear of the skull. But John Scannella, a doctoral student at Montana University, and his advisor, John R. Horner, have found that specimens attributed to the two species actually form a developmental continuum rather than falling into discrete groups.

A Triceratops skeleton on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, for example, exhibits a number of skull traits reminiscent of Torosaurus, including thin parietal bones and elongated squamosal bones. In addition, microscope examinations of thin slices of bone from Triceratops and Torosaurus specimens reveal that individuals attributed to Torosaurus are more mature than any of the ones assigned to Triceratops.

Scannella and Horner therefore believe that the fossils that have been categorized as Torosaurus are just Triceratops individuals that reached mature adulthood before they died.

    Rest of story...
On the whole, human beings want to be good, but not too good, and not quite all the time.

fantastic creature designs! I found myself trying to figure out how those animals moved and you put some good thought into their anatomy. Although, some of them are loosely based off of current existing creatures, it does provide a good template to work with when creating a new creature from imagination. I haven't done this sort of thing in a while, but I think i'll look into to it.

btw, that dragon painting is nuts, every blade of grass illustrated, damn...

    keep it up!
