your shading looks really sketchy but it really works, how do you get your lines so crisps?
ghosd
Thanks Ghosdum well for these I used a 0.7 mechanical pencil, maybe an F? I this its just using the sharp side for any details and the flat side for shading

Decent sketches, your shading is coming, perhaps try shading with more of a circular motion, and maybe try a full body sketch.
cheers man ill take that on board
Playing around with newsprint charcoal and nupastelsnupastels didnt scan too well

I like the shading going on, on the neck and the sides of the nose. Maybe try erasing the outline around the cheek shading, and then blend it a touch to see if you like it.
Sweet, is it a self portrait?
Thanks Kungfoowiz ill maybe do some of that next week iv been pretty busy so havent had much time for drawing
Thanks Konstruktion, nah I drew it from reference
Life stuff and some referenced![]()

Great lines dude, i especially like your sketchy shading techniques where you block out the shadows
cheers man
Just a quick colour study of the awesome Kevin Wueste (http://kevinwuesteart.blogspot.com) just trying out painter really as well as looking at faces and colour as I suck at both!

thanks for checking out my SB, your lines are looking nice and confident and i'm loving your charcoal/conte work![]()
Sweet, like the line quality. Wish I had that confidence! Keep posting.

great start!
Mmm, I'm not so sure about your fingers. Perhaps spend some time on the anatomy of the hands. Maybe focus on the outline of the thumb and then the fingers should follow in an arc from index to pinky.
You're truly drawing like an artist with the right side of the brain, that's it
Thanks Troubadour!
Cheers Sirkenneth that means a lot!
Thanks sansan
Cheers for the crit Kungfoowiz I keep meaning to do some Hogarth studies, his hands are really good albeit exaggerated should help to fix what you described
Thanks andres333
Just compiled a load of stuff from my life drawing pad, most of these are quick 10min sketches we work on gesture stuff a lot because we're looking at movement for animation. Sorry about the quality, way to big to go in a scanner and didnt have a better camera than my phoneAlso a robot design im thinking of doing for my character design project. I dont really like it I'll probably start over. Character design is way harder than I first thought

Sweet stuff, man. I agree with kungfoowiz about the cheek outline thing, other than that you're doing very solid stuff. Try out some softer pencils, I'd say, for more of a statement in your lines. Personally I never go below 2B and I often lay my pencil down flat for thicker softer lines when posing out stuff.
Nice to see a fellow animator also!!I Got my Bachelor of Arts in Animation almost 2 years ago now
Good luck with Anim-school.

Loving your hand studies yo. You got a good eye, can't wait to see some of your animations.
Thanks Softskin, cheers manyeah I need to fix that at some point. Yeah I will start using softer pencils. I really need to get a moleskine the my current pad is almost too toothy for soft ones
ah thats cool man where did you study? I checked out your blog your stuff is so good
Cheers Dr poPcoRN!
Thanks LuckyDevil, I'll try and upload them at some point, theres nothing special atm im just getting started bouncing balls ect

Cool, your lines are more confident in that one. Keep on keeping bro.
Edward
;-) good work
Had to comment when I saw the thread title. I've just started my animation course too. Exciting times! I'm sure you can relate.
Anyway, I really like those hand studies, they have a nice sense of movement and believable 'weight'. I love your pencil marks too; it seems you're really making the tone work with the sharp marks. And I just know you're being told as much as I am to observe life and draw draw draw! Moleskines are win as well. Have you found Hogarth studies to benefit your understanding of forms and your life work?
Keep up the cool studies dude. I'm looking forward to seeing my course result in some awesome projects and a real improvement in my work, and I hope the same for you!
wow loving the studies!
keep it up, this is great stuff!
You have alot of talent i esspecially like the way you draw your hands
Looking forward to seeing more -Jamie

Thanks Francisckthats cool where you studying? Thanks man, yeah same for me I couldnt tell you how many times I've been told the importance of life drawing
I'm doing it once a week atm but I wanna do more! yeah I've actually found that they work quite well. I would just be careful about the extreme exaggeration he uses in his studies
Cheers Mark I will try
Thanks OmertA
