Thanks Ghosd um well for these I used a 0.7 mechanical pencil, maybe an F? I this its just using the sharp side for any details and the flat side for shading

Decent sketches, your shading is coming, perhaps try shading with more of a circular motion, and maybe try a full body sketch.

I like the shading going on, on the neck and the sides of the nose. Maybe try erasing the outline around the cheek shading, and then blend it a touch to see if you like it.

Mmm, I'm not so sure about your fingers. Perhaps spend some time on the anatomy of the hands. Maybe focus on the outline of the thumb and then the fingers should follow in an arc from index to pinky.

Cheers Sirkenneth that means a lot!
    Thanks sansan
Cheers for the crit Kungfoowiz I keep meaning to do some Hogarth studies, his hands are really good albeit exaggerated should help to fix what you described
    Thanks andres333

Just compiled a load of stuff from my life drawing pad, most of these are quick 10min sketches we work on gesture stuff a lot because we're looking at movement for animation. Sorry about the quality, way to big to go in a scanner and didnt have a better camera than my phone Also a robot design im thinking of doing for my character design project. I dont really like it I'll probably start over. Character design is way harder than I first thought

Sweet stuff, man. I agree with kungfoowiz about the cheek outline thing, other than that you're doing very solid stuff. Try out some softer pencils, I'd say, for more of a statement in your lines. Personally I never go below 2B and I often lay my pencil down flat for thicker softer lines when posing out stuff.

Nice to see a fellow animator also!! I Got my Bachelor of Arts in Animation almost 2 years ago now Good luck with Anim-school.

Had to comment when I saw the thread title. I've just started my animation course too. Exciting times! I'm sure you can relate.

Anyway, I really like those hand studies, they have a nice sense of movement and believable 'weight'. I love your pencil marks too; it seems you're really making the tone work with the sharp marks. And I just know you're being told as much as I am to observe life and draw draw draw! Moleskines are win as well . Have you found Hogarth studies to benefit your understanding of forms and your life work?

Keep up the cool studies dude. I'm looking forward to seeing my course result in some awesome projects and a real improvement in my work, and I hope the same for you!
