Can I learn to Draw?

Greetings,

I was wondering if someone who is terrible at drawing can learn to draw by taking classes or is this a talent that you are just born with kind of like singing? I'm sure this is a pretty silly question to some but it has been holding me back for sometime. I've been reluctant to pursue my major in graphic design because of doubts in my ability to draw and the huge loans required in art school.

Art is a skill, not a gift. Put the hours in and you can do it, too. Just for the record, singing well is a skill that goes past a pretty speaking voice, as well.

In any case, just do it, there is a wealth of learning materials and classes out there at arm's length for a reason, and it's not because you can't learn.

If you learned how to spell, which you obviously did, you can learn how to draw. There's no magic, no tricks, no mystery, just hard work.

i feel i need to chime in, cuz u remind me of myself when I was in kindergarden.. i would say talent has alot to do with it because everyone said i was great at drawing from a young age and was obviously more skilled then the rest of the class..

but beyond the talent, i started reading and learning how things work and found out i can still get better .. so just start with the basics and draw cartoon characters, thats what i did starting out

p.s i have natural singing ability too

That's exactly like me! For years, I avoided anything that has to do with pictures (graphic design and the likes) cos' I can't draw. But I realized that I actually can draw (though the quality is very bad)! Look at my sketchbook in my signature link for once.

It just takes hard work and time.

As for those people with talent, just accept that they're better. I mean, there's no end to comparison, right?

Being good at art is just like for example being a strong weightlifter, you won't inherit big muscles from your dad who in this scenario is a strong weightlifter. You have to start working out and gain those muscles from training for hours and hours.

Talent is simply being good at discovering things by yourself.
But you're allowed to learn from the discoveries of others.

Sure, loads of people have (and I'm learning to draw myself), it's just looooong, and hard, and sometimes depressing.

while some will be better at it naturally drawing is a learned skill with structure,rules ect.

The trick is finding the information so you don't have to waste away trying to figure it out all by yourself.

Musicians have notes,scales, keys,ect learning those things usually produces a better musician so learning about perspective, volume, gambits, arabesques, the golden section, anatomy,color, ect will help improve the artist.

And BTW... you don't need to be able to draw well to pursue graphic design. Sometimes it helps, but really drawing and design are separate skills.

Yes, you can learn to draw. If you want to do it, you can. Roboko stated that sometimes it can be depressing, and it can. But you overcome this by keeping your sights set on where you want to be. You used to draw as a child? Of course you did, and you can still further develop that skill. Like many of us in thread, we are all striving for that. Come on, join us

I've heard countless artists say: You can teach a monkey to render (draw).

You can learn it, the other problem is: What to draw when you can do it.

You can learn to sing, too, same thing here.
