Wow, great topic. I don't think I can make it this time, got a lot of stuff in the pipeline that will pay me a new computer, so those things first. I'll try anyway, got some ideas.

So the book/books being a part of environment means literally - physical?

It's a good idea, although the current colour scheme and lack of other trees or scenery makes it seem like a book landfill with a single, dead tree. The wasteland of the written word. Maybe more green covers?

Matt_B Nice image. I'm not sure it's an image I would want as a promotion if I ran the library, but I love it none the less. It's like the books are returning to whence they came.... since we don't need them anymore. It's quite sad really.

Don´t let your monstermanuals lie around flipped open! Things could come out.

I thought I´d give it a try - as you can see perspective is not my best friend. And that allthough I drew a grid - I have no idea what I am doing wrong all the time...
I probably only need to practise it more >___<.
For me this is feels finished already - I am not sure though ...

I like the idea of a world out of books
but it looks very lonely to me and the books abandoned. Like the world had stopped reading and gathered all the books in one place to be forgotten.

tonic..in answer to your question... yes

a book or books must be a part of the environment.

ideas include scale, surreal. fantasy transformation....

I think it might be cool if you added a pop up book to your environent. Since it looks like he is hiking, maybe some mountains or wildlife could be used.

joshDartist :this looks epic ! good start - there is a lot of atmosphere in this sketch !

trudy : it´s an striking image ! you could take even more advantage of this first impact by pushinhg the book really in the foreground - it just looks too big in relation to the rest of the books around. two hands could hold it or it could be on a table - to see it just on the floor seems odd to me....but in fact it´s striking already like this--- hope this helps somehow....

Great subject. I've had a few ideas for it flash though my brain. I'll try and get them down but I've got my eye on the Unearthly Challenge. It beckons me with its sparkling treasures (which I dont stand a chance of getting close to)

anyhoo. I will try and get something down for this.

I plan to have more books, like butterflies.
And the clouds will be slightly more monster looking.

thescala since your image smells of paintover I googled "library" and this came out:

There's the same image in your portfolio with a phantom knight coming out of the book (and I suppose it was going to be in your next post here).

I am quite sure that old works and paintovers are not allowed in EoW, anyway it's not up to me to decide if your is a valid entry or not.

What I want to point out is that IMHO messing with others' photos is not a very good way to become a better artist.
Your library is a simple one point perspective with repetitive elements like columns, arches and...well... books, you could spend some time and try to draw it from scratch. If you are lazy you can draw the first vault with its arches and columns, then copy and scale it, paying attention to foreshortening.

P.S. I didn't want to be harsh. I simply can't understand why people are so afraid of learning perspective.

well it's a fine line. Matte painting is allowed.... but it better be good.. Old work most definately is not. Chances ar eI won't catch it if youdo this... I don't pay that much attention to people's work. but I do expect an honourable level of play here. beside what good does it do to post old work? Or for that matter revamp old Ideas it s not goiing to teach you anything. and isn't that what this is all about? winning is pretty worthless. hopefully better someday whenI get the time to give out winners icons. but still .... Play fair!

Obilex== I ve heard that is a pertinent movie to this topic,, adn whats up withyour thanked posts anywya? how did you do that?

thescala- pplease take it down or explain that you just put it up because it seemed pertinent to the topic, but it is NOT your entry to this weeks topic. Which you will then post sketches for which are entirely different from this in concept and composition. thanks. otherwise I will just delete it. It is actually a pretty nice pic...I went to the one in your portfolio.

ok then, i knew that this was going to be brought up. i really wasnt trying to get by, by using something that was already created. however, in all fairness, the only part of the original that i did use was the books and parts of the painting. i worked on this for over 8hours nonstop last night to get it done before school today. but if it wont count, then i guess i have a good portfolio piece.

thescala I didn't want to be nagging, I just thought it does you no good to paint over a photo...
If you're not comfortable with perspective (or you have no time to build it) trace over the picture and use it as a base to make your own environment. It sounds a bit like cheating but in the end is like using 3D as a base for painting over.

P.S. I don't even know if I can submit something for this round, so it's better if I shut up and stop haunting this thread...

Just a quick one. It started fine, but then it turned into a big pile of everything, including silly colors. Good thing it's just a sketch.
