    sala's sketchbook

These are a few images from my sketchbook from this year. I'm studying design at polytech, so I just draw in my sketchbook when ever I have spare time. Most of these are from my imagination and I probably used some photos for reference. Tell me what you think?

Last years attempts at digital painting. June 09

I haven't posted anything up here in a while so I thought I'd put something up. I want to aim at posting something up at least every week to show my work in progress and I thought it be best to start from the beginning. Here are my digital sketches ( or failed attempts ) on PS. Most of them will be grouped in months and most of them are unfinished!! So tell me what you think

Last years attempts at digital painting. July 09

Here is the bunch that I did in July, these were drawn using a 4x6" bamboo fun tablet. Small and annoying, didn't give me much space to work with and I kept getting aches in my wrist, I seriously needed to upgrade to an intuos and bigger too.

Hmm.. Well it looks like I haven't done much drawing and the stuff that I was producing don't seem that great. I think I was struggling a lot with colour and also proportion in the anatomy, drawing on a tablet compared to drawing straight on paper is a lot harder. And I feel way more comfortable with a pencil in my hand. But I want to better my skills with the tablet (hopefully get better)

Welcome and nice start to your SB. I see some very expressive lines in your sketches. Try to do some focused anatomy studies (from life, and photos) and you'll create a good foundation for fleshing out your characters and ideas.

Take a look at this thread regarding your wrist trouble:

Hey thanks for that helpful advice, I do a lot of gestural lines in my sketches but I think I need to nail down on the anatomy, yes I do think studying from life would help thanks

Thanks for the thread link, very useful

OmertA- Thanks man lovin your sb, great progress.

Well here is the october issue of last years digital sketches. A couple of them I used photo reference eg the girl posin. Most of these aren't finished which is a shame. Alot of them are just line work that i quickly sketched up.

    Digital Sketchbook March '10

Wow yes I haven't done any sketches in photoshop until March this year! Well I was able to save up and upgrade to a wacom intuos 3 6x8" kinda behind still, with the new Intuos 4 already out, but ohwell. This tablet was a great imporvement, much bigger and better. Still not familiar with drawing on a tablet still!! but yeah here are my March '10 sketches.

Haven't posted anythin up in a while, was hoping to put something up at least weekly!! well this is something i've been working on. Thought I;d try and do a couple of artist studies. This one here is of one of my favourite concept artists Daryl Mandryk, the next one isn't an artist study I tried painting it in under an hour this is how far i've got lol

    WIP Character Design

I recently downloaded some videos from MB website, one of them was Jason Chan's Character Design Volume 1 video, I thought it would be helpful with putting down an idea in my head. Here's one of the sketches that I created trying to follow Jason Chans technique.

Some really cool stuff !!! I wonder - do you ever get to draw from life ( like figure drawing) ? there is a lot of energy in your drawings and that - while some of it is influenced by other artists' work, I would love to see that in what/how you record what you see in front of you ( but I am biased a bit, about drawing from life!).. Keep it up - and thanks for stopping by my SB! - Kevin

The biggest critique I can make is that your faces need work and your line work could be cleaner. So just keep it up and your making good progress.

Btw how much of the poses that you draw are referenced? A lot of the posses in here look quite natural.
My observational skills may be great but i said nothing about my drawing skills
