Hello everyone,

This is my second introduction in this section, because I am starting my second sketchbook at CA.org, which means the previous one failed totally.

It is always nice to tell some words about yourself at first, so... My name is Matthew Ozminski and I am architecture student, starting fourth year of my master's degree education. One part of me loves to be accurate, calculate equations and solve logical problems, second is prolific, artitstic freak. I must admit it is not easy to live like that I maintain health mind

As everyone else here my main and only purpose of this sketchbook is to improve, so please share your thoughts with me. We are all learning here!

Thank you GemGem. I'm trying to still find my own style. I love these grungy concepts, but when I look at Marko's work done with the simpliest brushes, i understand that texture and effects are not the most important and you can achieve awesome results with them too

Resurrecting my sketchbook. The fact I wasn't updating it didn't mean I wasn't sketching on all flat surfaces. During this time I was trying to find some answers regarding art and technique...

This is not an usual update, but a reason to make my personal statement:
I recently got a feeling it is time for my to create my personal point of view and develop a visual language called style. I am very motivated to develop my creative thinking, improve originality of ideas and aesthethic of my paintings. But first I need your critiques guys! Do you think: my work is unintentionally influenced by someone else? is it strong? what should I avoid?... shoot at me with your thoughts!

P.S. Sketches below are from different periods (since october).

Great book here! Awesome paints. And I guess if you want feedback on your style here goes:

Your landscapes and brushworks remind me of Mullins and Brachna, but you've given it your own spin which is good . Don't think about it too much. I don't think it's a case of what to influences to avoid. Jon Foster's style is a blend of Rick Barry, Phil Hale, James Jean but it's his own. Mike Mignola's style is a hybrid of Jack Kirby and pre Nazi German art.

In the end, it's up to you. Hopefully, your style is something that you would enjoy as a viewer and stays true to yourself. By the way, I like the first piece with the lady and umbrella in the industrial environment. I like the contrast.

snootchy: thanks man that really encourages me to work more, I like looseness too, but to 'sell' such work require much more effort...

Eddieee: thanks, you've got great point there - don't think too much. It stands in opposition to my recent exploration though- I'm seeing art as more thinking process than just expression of myself. Thanks for reminding me of great artists, I had a great time watching their artwork.

Recently I ended my trip around Italy and I am getting back to painting. Travelling is really great to refresh inspirational influences.

Oh man, it was so difficult to choose works for portfolio for TAD application. I already learned quite a lot being forced to think about my own works more critically than usually. I discovered that when you want to make something the best as you can, nothing seems to be good enough... It is hard not to put a lot of emotions into such enterprises.

Genius_Malignus - brush confidence is something that comes in time and you're definetely able to achieve it! I am still learning this, but I think it is a matter of knowing what to paint upfront.

Awesome Sketchbook, it shows you have a really great imagination and sense of colour in your renderings, particularly in the two most recent ones, such as the one with that Bird/Camel/Slug Creature. That piece is my personal favorite as the sharper and bolder use of colour really helps make it stand out and capture the tropical landscape and creature.

Clockwork Bunny: thank you! I am not master yet, but will start working on it very soon. Right now I am 'just' studying and it is sometimes quite difficult to be technical in archiecture designs and loose and creative for art.

Fiddzy: thank you very much for your wide comment! I guess I am leaving quick digital speedpainting technique for more thought-out style. It is worth to sit and work a little more on a picture and resign from being 'speed painter'. Thanks again!

Nice work man. I like the loosness of the patterns... rhythmic and relaxing to tell you the truth- even the blood and gore one if you ignore the subject matter.

If I were to crit one thing, it would be the lack of planned composition. Some study of that would just bring out the rest of your skills to their full advantage.

Quick question though; how on earth do you find the time to produce work of this calibre!? I'm in second year studying architecture (therefore hoping to match your work in two years time! ), and I regularly find it difficult to get time to do even the quickest study...

Pixie Trick Thank you for pointing out what you see. I have not really thought of line energy and rhytm as for subject matter. Now I would experiment with more nervous linestyle. And composition is indeed very demanding task for me. You probably meant master studies, right? It will a task for tomorrow. Thanks again for critique! It really motivates me!

MacTire Thank you!!! All for you! Especially that you know what it means to study architecture. Finding time is an issue indeed... You may have harder programme than I do, but I guess it is a matter of choice at some point for everybody. I will also face my final question one day: architecture or drawing... I would like to give ultimate advice how to connect those two things but I have no idea. Can we be 'top-skilled' in two disciplines? Some people are drawing all day, how can I catch them if I draw more rarely? How can I be 'damn good' in architecture if I do not spend most of my free time on reading etc... You see the point. My ambitions met real life one - time limit. I'd love to share my experience with you. Send me a PM!
