Icon IDW #109: Supersonic Pizza Scooter

    Topic: Supersonic Pizza Scooter

Background: Simple topic this time. I think a lot of people are familiar with the traditional pizza delivery guy on his scooter. This is similar, except the service is faster and the drivers are even more anti social in their navigating through traffic

    Brief:
    1. Topic: Supersonic Pizza Scooter!
    2. That's it... now draw!

    Deadline: Saturday, September 6

Was making thumbs, and they went in the general direction of just "sci-fi" then I kinda read that it was supposed to be.. supersonic. Guy needs a bit more protection from the elements than on a scooter then...

Was just wondering though, do we need to depict the guy/gal on the scooter using it, or is it ok with just the design of it?

It's not necessary to depict the guy/gal with the scooter, that's up to you. Might be handy to show the scale of things though (also, it doesn't say it has to be 'human'...)

...seems like I could've done a better job on picking the topic this time, it seems?

gah, alive - how did you know
Im basing mine on Dominos after I got a load of discount coupons from them- was out of a fresher week letter I got from my Uni the other day £350 of savings :|

a quick question though yoitisi - Does the scooter *have* to look like a scooter [such as a classic piaggio/vespa shape] or can it be a supersonic vehicle of a scooter size with the prime goal of pizza delivery?

    cheers

PheKt: The 'scooter' should roughly fall under what you would categorise as scooters today. The Vespa and Piaggio might be iconic and very recognizable, but try and figure out what makes a scooter a scooter and translate that to your own design is my advice.

yeah i think with this topic it would be easy to turn a scooter into some sort of speeder bike, however, the topic is scooter, not bike , so it has to stay within that size and general shape i think

First sketches. I think they are too similar to actual scooter. i need to make them more different/interesting.

Fear not! I have a plan!

Some more sketchies. The design problems I'm thinking about right now are aerodynamics, and the power, in that order. It's a bit hard to push the shape too far without if falling into non scooter-like shapes.

I agree with Pixie Trick. Aerodynamics comes first, especially when you're travelling over mach 1.

Thought I'd give this Industrial Design of the Week a go since it seems like a lot of fun and I can learn a lot from it! So far I've created this quick concept. I've never attempted a vehicle concept before so it was an interesting challenge. I added a pizza in the front because I thought it fit the shape well. Of course I pushed the design a bit too far and it doesn't really look like a scooter anymore. I'll make some sketches tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I think something is going to have to give somewhere in the design. Aerodynamics are important, but heat is an issue as well. Surfaces on planes travelling that fast can reach 600 degrees farenheit. So its either got to be enclosed, ridden by a non-human rider, or maybe a little less than supersonic? These issues could just be overlooked though....

    Thumbs up Interesting brief!

sup people, im liking the concepts!

I did a bit of research to find out characteristics of scooters in comparison to motorbikes:

"There are a number of differences that differentiate between a "scooter" and a motorcycle. First of all, ALL scooters have a floorboard where you can put your feet. Motorcycles usually just have foot pegs to put your feet on. Scooters usually do not have you shift gears, such as that on a motorcycle. Scooters usually have one "gear". Unless the throttle is beyond an idle state, scooters are usually in "neutral". Only motorcycles have the characteristic high gas tank, which is usually between your knees when riding it"

    http://home.att.net/~jnozum2/Motorcy...d_Scooters.htm

The main specification for me is the floorboard for the feet im not sticking too rigid to anything else

Yeah, you've made a great point here. As I was thumbnailing, a lot of my ideas seemed to be drifting more towards the shape of a jetski than a scooter. The main difference is you sit on a scooter as you would on a chair, rather than straddle it like a bike or jet ski. Also, you don't see pizza guys riding the fastest most aerodynamic bike they can get their hands on. The scooters have to be cheap (i guess) affordable to run, but also agile and nippy. Which is why a big beefy streamlined thing seems a bit silly to me. I wanted to go for that "cheaper" feel. Here's my main idea:

Well, this thing really would never occur in real life. A supersonic scooter would be nearly impossible to steer on a street, break windows just from passing the sound barrier, and be really, really expensive to run. In general this is a silly, impractical, unrealistic topic. Which is really, really fun. If we just ignore reason that says it's completely impractical, then we just make the coolest supersonic looking scooter that can carry a pizza delivery guy and is wares. Because anything that currently exists that goes supersonic is aerodynamic, that's what people are going to associate it with. If we just had to do a pizza scooter, we could have more freedom in the shape.

    More stuffs.

Hi all, I just wanted to chime in on the discussion about what a scooter looks like. As some have noted, scooters tend to have a more upright riding position, small engine, and are cheaper as compared to motorcycles. But, as I-Z said, the main technical difference is the lack of gearing. There are grey areas when it comes to pure looks. Check out the Honda Super Cub which was/is a 50cc (super small engine) motorcycle with gearing. It looks like a scooter though! My point being, I'm not sure a distinction really needs to be made between the look of a motorcycle and scooter (especially seeing as how this thing is supposed to be supersonic ). Rather, in my opinion a scooter design should focus on functional point A to B travel with no amenities or superfluous features. Given the supersonic stipulation, I guess it's no surprise that my first concept is basically a jet engine with a seat on top. I didnt think through how the pilot is supposed to get back on board though; right now he is just sort of hopping out... lol! oh well.

I definitely like WIPs that have been posted! I think I am going to have to refine my design to be more scooterish I can definitely tell it's a scooter when looking at other people's WIPs, not so much with my first effort. I'm looking forward to seeing people's finals!

thanks for the in depth analysis NoShot, Im probably going to have to revise my design by the sounds of it :p

really liking all the WIPs here,
I like the fact you've chosen to do a wheeled version instead Pixie Trick, but my only concern would be how it would brake?
