I haven't read the books but i like this pic. good movement. i like that the dark silhouettes are up top to give it some weight up there but it needs something down below to balance out the composition, maybe a pool of that black blood.
I like how you have used different textures to separate the different elements, thats very strong. You need to work on your forms and form shadows more. Once you get your form shadows working well and complimenting the textures fully your work will be awesome.
I think it looks great! I love action shots, and this is nicely posed. The critique on the form shadows however, is probably valid.
Thanks everyoneYeah I see what you mean about the form shadows....especially on the back ants, I did spend less time on them than the rest...i'll def keep at it
Not only the ants, but also his right arm.. it looks very flat. Try looking up some good examples on foreshortening. But yes your texturing is very nice, and when you get form down its gonna be awesome.
This isn't the best example, but I couldn't find the one I was looking for:

But you can see his shoulder overlapping his upper arm overlapping his lower arm overlapping his hand.
yeah somethin about that arm does bug me...feels a little stiff I'll admit...couldnt quite get it the way I wanted it. Hell it used to be even longer until i was like..."wait that's not right" haha
thanks for the crits
I agree with the crits the rest are crew are saying, Including the positive point as well. I did want to repeat them entirely, or quote them all.

the helmet is about the only part i still like!
great sense of motion man, very good![]()
Dude, the first thing that I thought when I saw your piece was "Felix in the Scout armor smashing the crap out some Ants!".
Mr. Natural high freakin five man it's definitely like my favorite book.
It's a great book, everyone should read it - read it now.
I agree with the comments about the right arm, the foreshortening is lacking. I also have an issue with the right leg being cut off - I think it is detrimental to the movement of the figure. The area around the groin is very dark, it makes the upper leg look flat and the torso look truncated. I like the way the ants in the back look, but the fact that the three are so different in color from the one he is fighting makes them look like they are painted on a wall, instead of being separated from the viewer by atmosphere and dust. I think his left leg and foot might be a little small.
I love the cover art for the first edition, I think it was by James Gurney. I will not read any edition that doesn't have this on the cover:
The ants are far too cute in your picture man, it makes me sad! Don't hurt the ants!![]()
