Wow this is a really cool assignment, I think i may give it a go.

You're captured the structure and the lighting really well with the sketch, but to take it the little bit further, next time you may want to add some tones to the bg to make the subject pop a little more.

great start to a sketchbook. I looked through the first page and thought it was interesting but that you could benefit from doing some studies, then straight away turned over and BAM a lovely study of some geraniums in pencil and this portrait.

Both are looking good. My recommendation for getting accuracy with a portrait for that is to include loooads of very light (so you can erase or draw over) construction verticals and horizontals. Angles can be done too for things like eyebrows and mouth orientation.

No crits, just keep on going and stack up some CA pages!

lots of ambitious ideas here. looking thru page 1 I was going to say using reference more would make your life a lot easier, but here on p2 you do just that and it really helps. good work.

Thomas, thanks very much! Your pencils look great!
I don't have one way of sketching or drawing/painting, that's good advice, and I might add some helpful lines in future sketches.

Velocity, thanks very much! Compliments will get you everywhere!
For many years, for family and friends, I've used plenty of reference and I think it's great!,...very useful!,...and I love the challenge of using memory, and imagination.

Gotta add more art to me SB!!!

Well that mermaid piece is actually good. However you should pay more time to anatomy and spend more time analyzing real life in order to improve your rendering skills. Wish you luck on your path.

    Thanks very much Sycra!

Here, you can see the progress of my latest acrylics on canvas.
The Captain and his bride, about 530mm X 650mm

    Up to 50 hours work!

Being mostly self taught, and kind of scared of acrylics, this was a huge challenge for me,...so glad I did it!

The most challenging part of this painting was the skin colours, early on I went too dark,...I tell you now I was fully stressed for a couple of weeks.

Busy with other jobs, coming home and seeing this painting of problems in my studio was probably a good thing.

    Anyway, I got over it!

    Completed!
