Hey man!

Anyhow i've been following your sketchbook for awhile, i really like the creativity for these monster designs. From observation i can tell some of those monsters you drew inspiration from Real life animals, then made it your own =) what's your process?

And Out of curiosity, what are your tools of trade? i just started doing this stuff and i've only used mechanical pencils. They don't get the values i would like to see. Given i'm a scrub to begin with so i don't even know if i'd be utilize other mediums properly.

Hey guys, I'll reply to everyone soon! Right now I need your help. I finished these two pieces that I've been 'tring to finish' for like 6 months. Some of you might recognize them.

Anyhow.. Please give me your thoughts regarding them! crit me! I want to build a serious portfolio so please be honest

Personaly I know there are details I can work, but as I've been working them for half a year I'm dead tired of them! right now I feel they're good enough to put into a portfolio even though some small flaws like the foreground on the warbeast piece (kinda loose, no real detail)

Du kan försöka separera pingvinen lite mer från bakgrunden, och worka bakgrunden lite mer eftersom brushstrokesen som syns distraherar lite. På den nedre så skulle kanske några highlights i de flam-liknande sakerna se bra ut. Men det ser jätte schysst ut redan .

Hey man, those are looking pretty good.
With your arctic warbeast, my crits would be: the patterning looks a bit too overlayed, that is to say, it doesn't follow the form of the creature enough, with a little bit of erasing and warping that could be easily solved. The feet don't quite feel unified with the rest of the design, feeling a little bit to much like a humanoid's feet, which is especially jarring when they're in such close proximity to the creatures hands, which feature a seemly very different set of claws.
On the dragon, the only thing I can really say to help is that the perspective on the head looks a little off, which flattens it out.

/Hmm, i think the warbeast image is FAR stronger than the dragon. The dragon has some nice things about it, but i think it could use more work. the front of the body doesnt read so well in terms of spatial distance and perspective, especially around the head area. I can see that your focal point is the eye, but i think that the design of the dragon's head is weak.

Anyways, i hope the critique helps.

yay you finished em! i second what other people have said already. the war beast is solid as hell, its just a little unclear what the swirly stuff is at the top. if its suposed to be coming from the creature, make that clear; and if its supposed to be part of the background, separate it. and like other people have said for the dragon, the perspective is a bit wonky in the head and neck. i would extend the neck to make it longer as well as have it curving down a bit. right now, its got a kind of "boat head" feel to it, like one of those mermaids or whatever on the front of ships. picture in your mind how this thing would move and itll look much smoother. same with the rest of its body. there are a lot of sharp, straight angles in its curves which really upsets the flow of the whole thing. look at pictures of snakes and youll see what i mean.

I don't think the perspective is all that bad on the head, but more neck structure could help, pushing that head up so it has more overlap with the body behind it. the only thing I can think of for the warbeast, as I really love the design is trying to push a stronger silhouette. This could be done in various ways but the easiest would be to have his arms oustretched from his body in more of an open, welcoming angry gesture. Cheers!

as for crits goes, ill try my best, for the first one, i would say it could help to bring up the level of rendering around things like the feet, and around the fingernails. the stomach area looks a bit undefined, maybe some more clear cuts, or bulges could help to identify some clearer anatomy on him. but i love the highlighting so far, not over the top, but still crisp. maybe give him some more detail around his head too, on top its a bit blurry and suggestive at this point. the ground could also use some more tooth, like some texturing on the rocks or dirt, maybe some grass blades here and there.

as for the second piece, it still feels pretty loose all over. the background is very suggestive, and im not sure if your planning on putting one in later, or keeping it more like a frame for your creature design, but either way i would make it more clear , as a bg, or make it a bit flatter, if your keeping it as a feature to showcase your design. the creature itself is very cool, and im really digging how your lighting it, in the creatures sections, or segments, that looks cool! but i did feel like the head was pretty small, for being the most detailed part of the image, i thought that it took up very little realty on the page. maybe if you enlarged the head through perspective, having it moving more towards the camera, or something, that might give the overall image some more impact.

im obviously not on your level, as far as artistry goes, but i hope seeing someone elses opinion gives you something to work towards. and i guess even if youve made up your mind, it cant hurt to have another opinion. so i hope its of some help to you. good luck!

Thanks a ton for all your feedback! I'm not able to reply right now. Just wanted to let you know that I've taken all of it to heart and tried to adjus the images accordingly.

Warbeast: worked background and foreground more as well as some details on the creature

autumndragon: made the front part of the body bigger, head now overlaps parts to indicate depth. tried to avoid tangents.. the rendering seems a bit messed up after I added an unsharp mask..

also adding a third piece I finished... also an old piece from 2010. Replies to everyone tomorrow.

I wont be working these guys any more. Need to get back on track and produce some new work.. hope to return to this sketchbook soon!
