Metal Fingers - Thanks Alex. It's good to be back

Oren90 - yeah . I'm trying to do that too it's mostly a loose mess right now.

Shambok - Glad you like it!

    NickyBeats - Thanks!

Started painting an old sketch from 2009 yesterday. It was just after Diablo3 was announced and I felt the urge to draw some diablo-inspired monsters.

I'm recording the process too.. it's kinda fun. Gonna make myself a speedpaint movie with this one
Needed something else to work on in-between the COW.

I realized I paint way too fast.. in a bad way. I just lay down strokes without thinking of what I'm doing.. I think it's because I'm afraid of getting into detailing too early.. I have this mental barrier I need to overcome. I'm always thinking "dont start detailing yet dont start detailing yet" because people on the boards used to tell me it's bad to start rendering early. Now it's the opposite. Now I don't dare to start rendering even though I have a solid foundation and know I won't have to change anything in the design.

Anyone else that has this problem? any ideas of how to get rid of it?

Uh, i'm a total noob when it comes to this area but I always thought that the process
doesn't really matter. I tend to go into details pretty quickly with some things and stay loose on other areas pretty much til' the end.

I mean, as long as you can keep everything readable during the process, detailing too soon
or not doesn't matter. This is just my opinion though, I could be terribly wrong.

just take it slow, deep breaths and be methodical about it. I'd put the feet of that bastard in asap though, I love the design, its fancy and beautiful and just, yes, my kind of thing.

Ludic - thanks, I think you're right. In the end I'll have to find what I'm comfortable with and what works for me.

Theodora_romania - just you wait til it's finished!

    Baconstrap - rawr!

Metal Fingers - I'll try! haha I thought you'd like it. I did a quick sketch of the feet and some details. Not sure if I like it.. will sleep on it. What say you? .. think Diablo3

Couldn't sleep. Uploading some arts instead.

sketch for illustration of the week, more work on the monster and a quick enviro study.
I need something bringing the viewer into the depth of the illustration.. right now the eye follows the characters but doesn't really look into the landscape. Need something from left that goes into the piece. hrm..

Lancer_idenoure - hehe yeah! tryin to atleast paint more actively sounds good. Will do.
    cheers!

Here's a small story I came up with for the piece

"Gromwick's crossing was just a week's journey ahead. We'd been travelling for days at a steady pace when the cold weather was starting to take its toll. Struck by numbing fatigue my body felt like rock. Strange.. the wind feels unusually sharp. If only my boots weren't so heav..

    - "'s the matter lad? Find anything of interest in the mud?"

Daeryn's torch aiming at me, lightening up his face and a rugged grin.

    - "Leave the boy alone. The mud's the least of our problems in these parts. We're in the marshlands now."

Jovian's outstretched hand helped me up and I nodded a thanks.

    - "..Won't be stepping where there's no soil again.. that's for sure." I muttered.

He was right though. I've heard strange things about these lands. They say there's something in the wind playing with people's minds. The old folks at home used to tell about ancient evils slumbering.. Not that I care about bedtime stories to scare children with. Though it wasn't really reassuring to think of them as such either.
And the men, they say the marshes are cursed. The sooner we reach the crossing, the better.

A strange noise cut through the night.

    - "Better stick together! Don't wander off, not even for a piss! We've been notified by the Screechers. By god I swear they're the only good thing in these parts, even for being birds of carrion."

"We're entering 'its' territory now. A moist and newly pissed body is a real treat I tell ya and I won't have another death my shoulders today."

By captains orders we stuck together and moved forward. There was something with that wind though.. Something wrong. One word came to mind, and it brought shivers down my spine. Death."

In this story there's emphasis on the wind blowing, there's something strange about it. I added a wind in this wip having it blow from left into the piece, guiding the eyes. I am thinking of painting subtle bony hands in the wind to show 'death'. Rob Powell mentioned having something in the far distant.
The piece is during nighttime and you wouldn't really be able to see whats happening far away though. Thinking of changing time of the day to mid-day and play around with atmosphere a lot instead.

I'm open for crits and feedback! anything that helps!

hey ho.. just wanted to say I'm not ready to get back into art again. Still lots of anxiety hitting me in my head when I paint. Dunno when I'll be consistent and update again.. It's no good! but it will go well. I know it will

keep on doing what you love everyone! enjoy life!

(here's a kittycat I worked on a few months ago - until next time!)

*edit .. I'm not quitting art. I try to draw every day. I just need to get away from the pressure of maintaining a sketchbook. Once I land in myself I think I'll be back on track and be able to update this sketchbook without feeling a lot of pressure. Just need to slow down a bit, that's all

I think you gotta just press forward and do it dude. There will always be a reason not to. but you gotta find a reason "to do" you know what i mean?

Instead of what makes you not want to draw and paint, think of why you did it in the first place. not saying that you need to get into "production mode" but you should remember atleast that art is a powerful tool for bringing emotional healing and meditation.

Even if you dont post, you should consider making art a personal thing that helps you cope with the stuff youve been going through and cherish it as a reprieve from the world, instead of a declaration to the world.

i think if you see things that way you will start to regain your steam in no time.

on the creature, try defining a bit more stark light/dark patterns to define the form, the shape heirarchies of the values don't quite read right at this point in time. Maybe cut in a few hard edges here and there to really emphasize those plane changes. Also I'd pay attention to the background, the shapes you have right now are a bit distracting. I'd keep it all one mid tone that is far enough away from the lights and darks that it doesn't compete with whats inside the silhouette.

Don't give up when you're plateauing... those are generally the spots right before you get better.

RE: Painting too fast... just make sure to get the big shapes... it's not about speed, it's about getting a good start (if that means slow down, slow down)... but don't take too long. I've found that works best. Slow down for maybe a half a minute to get at least one shape established, then speed up, comparing every new shape to that shape... in a fast way.

    Make sense?

If you get your lighting and values and shapes sorted out, the rest is a piece of cake... it gets harder to screw things up at that point

    Cheers and stay with it

Been a while since I've commented. It might not be of too much help with the anxiety problem but one thing that always works for me is removing all distractions for an hour ahead, sitting down and chugging a big mug of coffee and draw something totally in your comfort zone... in a couple of minutes you're thinking "why haven't I been drawing all this time?"

About the problem with wanting to detail too early, and all that... have you seen Craig Mullin's Gnomon video? He talks about how there is no one process for painting, and how professionals should take time from their work to try something absolutely unexpected, in order to discover new techniques. He then creates a painting by starting with details first, small brushes first, leaving big patches of canvas untouched and makes an absolutely wonderful picture. What I mean to say is, don't get caught up in any "rules" - if it works for you, s'all good homie
