maria riaz thanks a lot i figure painting is the only i can ever get out of this forsaken country i live in so i'm trying my level best become as good at it as possibly can it's a shame i have to work 10 hours a day, so much wasted time

i've wanted to do something VERY sci-fi for quite a while now, so when i found the beyond the frontier contest i was like, "HELL YEAH". So the topic is unkown moons & 've been thinking about what i wanna do for it for the past two weeks or so and i finally decided to do an image of someone in a small space craft or "travel pod" these are one man space pods that people use to travel between moons, planets and ships over short distances in protected areas, they're lightweight and built for the speed so they have no weapons. The ship itself is a half circle "spine" with a shield around it, i can't find a better way to explain i think the initial draft sketch below should help i thought about designing a spacesuit & whatnot for the character but i figure if people actually lived on or between these moons/planets they wouldn't really need space suits cause the ships would already be protection enough. Then again it might be a little boring to have her dressed in civilian clothers, i thought about making her a space pirate but i'm still not decided yet.

i wanted a sort of reclining chair in the ship, like a barber chair but this one looks small & uncomfortable. Now i'm thinking of removing it & replacing it with a slightly big cushiony-roundish one, then getting rid of the controls at the top and putting them on the chair.

Usually i spend too cuch time plotting & desgning things when i'm doing model sheets, up to 10 days. i'm hoping to be done wth this by the weekend so any help & suggestions will be really welcome

Hi. Thanks for the visit to my sketchbook.

Some good stuff in here... the one thing I'm seeing that's kind of like fingernails on a chalkboard is the line quality.

I've just begun reading Mattesi's book on gesture... and he describes the back and forth style of line as indecisive. I think that's a good way to put it. If lines go every which way, they don't have a purpose and they lose their power.

Anywho... just a little crit. Keep working.

p sage thanks for coming through spot on about the indesisive lines, i don't exactly have a technique yet. i'll try to work on that

change of plans, yesterday i found out about the twisted fairytales contest so i'm putting the travel pod design on hold cause there's only eight days to the deadline for this one, i decided to do Anastasia. The plot: After killing resputin everything in the kingdom was hunky-dory, Anastasia & Dimitri got married & lived happily ever...........but not for long. What they didn't know was that when they broke the vile of evil spirits that gave resputin his pover, they realeased the onto the castle grounds & they never left. in time Anastasia & Dimitri grew tired of eachother, they would argue all the time over nothing and finally that love they once had turned into hate. Anastasia deecides she would rather strike first than risk getting killed by him. Still work in progress but i like it so far

i want it to look like she shot him once & he was trying to crawl away, she follows, pins him on the stairs & shoots him again. i realised last night that i spend too much time trying to refine things even in the early stages, i tried to look up some refernce pictures but the closest i could find to what i had in mind was this Arr_15 i then spent the one & a half hours trying to get the two of them in the right positions & i still haven't managed. i need to get a refence of the inside of a castle for the background beyond the stairs, if anyone's got some links i would really appreciate your help.

i decided to make a list of the advice i've been given & need to keep in mind as i work on this

    1. determine the light source early on & be aware that some body parts are further away from the light source & therefore will have a different shading
    2. work on the image as a whole, intead of parts (now thats gonna be hard, no layer masks for this one)
    3. avoid soft brushes (eeek)
    4. vary the amount of rendering (keep the details to the major focal points of the painting)
5 do not use white for highlights
    5. try using purple as a base for shadows & less pure black values
    6. do not make single strands of hair (waste oftime)

    alrighty then, here it is

Great progress Miycko. Would love to see you do some master work studies and post it.

Try adding more items/furniture to the scenes. It currently feels empty save for the bed.

    Hey Miycko
    That gun looks fairly sweet.
Just be a bit careful where the vanishing points are in the perspective.

The rendering in the latest one is coming along very well.

The perspective on the bed looks a little weird... like the front leg of the bed is broken off, or something.

About your line quality again. How do you grip your pencil? I recently changed grips, and have found it much easier to swing my arm around and make sweeping moves. Easier to lock the wrist too. And no dragging of the heel of your hand (pinky-side) or knuckles on the paper... much smoother.

Jizu thanks so much for for the kind words i actually finished the samurai chick. the final image is the second one in post #51

The man with no name thanks a lot, spent quite a bit of time on the gun so i'm glad you like it

seagulls thank you glad you like the gun, to be honest i don't know the first thing about perspective i just draw things as i think they should look. so any advise you can give in that area will be truelly appreciated

areve thank you the smaurai chick is actually finished, it's the second image in post #51, but now that two people have said that i'm starting to wonder if there's something missing from it

p sage thanks, you're right about the bed, i'll need to have a look at it.

a bit of progress here & there, added blood splatter where i used a brush from annfrost stock i'm quite happy with it so far though it might need a little work. also trying out some layer effects to try & get a sort of heated tension feeling, i like the red but i might not keep it, let me know which ones better i'm quite slow when i'm detailing , so i'm probably gonna have to pull an all nighter finish this by saturday, better get back to work

Nice overall progress! Your last piece is coming along well too, although, if I might add, the blood seems a bit off, especially the drips on the floor, I think they should get smaller the further they are away from us. The rest is looking really good, digging the details too!

wakoee great to see you here i'll definately keep your suggestion in mind

    Grandmassa Mr. Spect thanks dude

p sage thank you i forgot to answer your question about the pencil yesterday. to be honest it's been months since used a pencil for several reasons, the first is that i don't have a scanner so it would be a bit of trouble to take pictures of sketches, plus anything on paper doesn't survive in my house, my brothers, sister & mom, they all have a bad habit of messing with my stuff so i've resorted to doing everything digitally. i usually hold the pen between my index, middle & ring fingers

kidult thank dude seems we are neighbours glad to finally find someone else from this part of the globe

Cranberry thank you i think you're right about the blood stains, i was thinking since the distance isn't all that much between the bed & where they are i would leave it that way but i think i should have a look at that

small update, didn't do much last night

While working on this in the morning i realised something, doing a character portrait takes me about 8 to 9 hours (sometimes with a background included) so i would think it should have taken less than thirty hours to do this image, right now i'm close to fourty. i wonder why i takes me so long when i'm doing stuff for contests?! oh well

i moved the characters around a little bit, Demitri looked like he was floating, as a result i have some fixing to do in the background but i think he's looking better now. Gonna add some sort of paintings in the frames on the wall & probably a chair or two. i want to post this tomorrow morning so if you notice anything that's off or have some advice please let me know

    Hi again miycko.
Ill go into the perspective a bit more and It's to help you out not to criticise you.
What I mean with the vanishing points, well for something structured like a room I usually notice straight away If something is off. So what I think is a bit off is where you have placed the vanishing points.
The problem is not where things get smaller as they go away, I know you understand that, but where the parrallel lines would meet for things like the walls.
So... say if you continued those lines for the wall further and further away from the viewer, they will meet at a point- eventually. And this point for things like rooms is pretty often the horizon.
Anyway so what I see wrong is that one of the two walls has the vanishing point not on the horizon, But depending on which you prefer this could be the left or right wall.
The left wall it seems the horizon is around about the eye level, for the right I think about her chin. If it were me I would probably correct the right wall to the other horizon.
There are other things but I think fixing this will help you see them.
    Hope this makes sense.
heres a little tutorial on perspective I think may help if my grammar is too confusing.
    http://www.technologystudent.com/designpro/perhous2.htm

But do Keep going . I know it will look good having seen your past works. I like the red version.

and i dont realy understand the lighting. why is the shade on the front of her legs and also why is it blue on the rest of the body, not just under the dress?

anyway blood on the guy looks great (:
