Machado's Sketchbook [+ Nudity] [+ Crit Me Please!]

    Hello people from CA!

My name is Bruno Oliveira Machado. I'm 24 years old and I'm a Brazillian. So sorry about the bad english.

I'm a webdesigner, working in about 5 years and I'm sick of it. Can't stand much of Html/CSS anymore, and I'm really considering in throwing all that background in a trash can, to really search my passions.

The only problem is that I can't just quit my job, because it pays my bills. So I'll have to organize my time, and get some decent artistic skills before doing that, and hopefully with some job guaranteed.

All I dream about is working on the entertainment industry. I love storytelling of any kind. So writing, drawing, painting and animating really get me excited. I'm kind of a gamer as well, so I'm a big fan a lot of concept arts from a lot of games, even tough I don't know the artists names.

That's when I met this comunity. I'm a huge fan of "Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines", and I always tought the art from the game was incredible. When I discovered Jason Manley took part in that work, even tough I don't know to what point, I had to come check it out. Those online classes are a delicious surprise for me, and just another reason to stick around. lol

Lately I'm really bored, without the motivation to do nothing but complain about my lack of skill and blah, blah, blah. I know that you guys are tired of reading this sort of thing. But just know that this comunity is a big inspiration to me, and I'll try to post my old work here. Maybe with the help of the amazing artists around, i'll be able to improve my skills and do my part in the industry. Ambicious I know, but worth trying.

So, thank you guys! (If you had the patience to read to this point, lol)

There goes some painting tryouts using Photoshop. Again, most were done copying from pictures over the web, others were done from imagination. Others were done from imagination, but using rock and trees brushes wich I have no pride about.

As you guys can see, I need a lot of help. Any tips of what I should be practicing would help me a lot.

    Thanks!

I'm new here too and it takes time to get feedback. Unfortunetely, since I'm still a beginner I'm not the best person to give crits right now all I can say is that your artwork looks good to me and keep at it.

I can however give you some advice on getting others to comment here... post comments wherever you have something valuable to add and visit and comment on others sketchbooks. Most people will return the favor. I put a couple of posts in the "Draw From What Everyone Looks Like" thread in the Lounge and that helped me get a few responses.

Also make sure you add a link to your sketchbook in your signature line or no one will know you have one. You can do that by clicking on "User CP" in the upper left. Hope this helps!!

Thank you very much! I'll do as you say, starting with your sketchbook.

EDIT: Here are some sketches, most of them were done copying from magazines and pictures over the web. But others were done from imagination. Any critiques are more than welcome!

Hey man! Welcome to CA and welcome to the team of sick-of-being-a-webdesigner. I am part of this too.

Nice start. I´m not an expert, but I think you are on the right direction. Just keep studying.

Hey, now you're getting some comments...

I really do like your drawings, especially the last two posts. I don't think your anatomy is all that bad but then I'm having trouble seeing whats wrong with mine . I'm working on it...

    Nice work!

More sketches. This time tryied my luck on gesture. But 30 seconds drawing from Pose Maniacs is really intimidating. All I can do is draw like a maniac, using just my reflexes, or time ends before I can do much.

Other problem is that I'm no sure What I'm supposed to be heading for. The overall shape? The "bone structure"? The bones and the muscles? All those doubts become a huge confusion inside my head, while I draw and the clocks keep ticking.

If anyone could enlight me on that matter, I would really appreciate it.

And some hands studies on the bottom. Hands are really tricky subject. But, I'll keep on trying to improve.

PS: Anyone knows how to put text between images? Thanks!

Have you seen any of Glenn Vilppu's books? I'm not sure if they have them in Portuguese, but the basic idea is that you're trying to capture the action when you're doing gesture drawings.

It seems you're doing okay with the ones you've done, but you're trying to do the contours of the bodies instead of finding single lines that show how the action flows from the head, through the body, and then to the limbs.

It's hard for me to explain, but Vilppu's books do a great job.

I really like the image you used for the thumbnail on this thread. She has a very nice blue breast!

I just started with the Villpu books and I couldn't agree more. Posemaniacs make a lot more sense even after just the first few chapters. Nice job on the ink!

When you do gesture exercises you need to capture the essence of the pose. Here is a >> link << that clarify the concept.

Glen Vilppu is sure a master. He has series of instructional books and DVDs. Look at this >> link <<.

I recommend you a great book too: Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators.

You are doing great. Keep it up, man.

P.S. Did you read my earlier post about the PSG Art Tutorial? Go find it. It has a list of subjects to study.

Her forehead IS a bit too big but I like her anyway. It may be the shadows but something is a little off proportionally with her eyes I think. I'm not sure. Critiquing isn't my strong point yet.

I REALLY like the patterns on her clothes and the wall she's leaning against. Working in ink is challenging. Keep it up!

E aí cara! Bom ver outros brasileiros por aqui. Eu to em uma situação bem parecida com a tua - to terminando ciências da computação e decidi que vou jogar tudo pro alto e estudar desenho. Minha idéia é montar um portfólio bom pra tentar alguma oportunidade lá fora.

Gostei muito dos teus desenhos. O do coringa tá genial.

Wow, not only did you start good, you've definitely gotten even better. I really loved the gestures, they felt much looser than allot of your other stuff which was definitely interesting and I think for the most part you had a good handle on motion with them. Keep it up and good luck with your goal.
I have nothing interesting to say but here's my sketchbook, perhaps you'll think I've drawn something interesting XD http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=167964

Heya! Thanks for dropping by the SB! You've got a good start here! Keep those life drawings coming! You have a decent idea of proportions but you're figures will loose their stiffness if you try and focus a bit more on gesture. Looking good, keep it up!
