Newborn Contest Entry WIPs Thoughts, etc...eventually final submission i hope. haha

i read about this a few days ago.Spent some time thinking about it. What do i actually bring into this world with art? Simple answer: what i want. Egotistical, yes.Truthful, yes.
Aaaaanyway....
So for this contest i decided to go ahead and do what i want. i do sculpture. While this contest seems like it is for digital drawings and paintings, it is not stated anywhere i could see, that you cannot do sculpture.So dammit i am doing what i want to do.
My project will be this: The initial sketch of a sculpture and the sculpture.
The finished sculpt will be glancing up at the initial sketch. i want it to be like the sculpt is looking at the idea of itself, and realizing it came into creation, and exists now, because that simple idea/sketch was developed further. Basically that's what i do, i turn whats in my head into something i call My Art.

Got the wire outline for the creature done tonite. Will bulk it out with foil,paper, etc. tomorrow and make the wire outline for the egg.

i like to use foil to save on sculpey, and paper to save on foil. lol
here he is getting his paper stuffing. It helps me to get the shape i want and see if i need to change anything with the wires before i stick on the foil.

Added the foil, getting close to sculpey now. whoohoo!

Didn't work too much on it yet, just covered the foil really.

Yah, i'm the "lone rety with the 3D" so far i think. LOL

There will be a drawing with it, eventually...hopefully, else my idea is kind of lost.

i am doing that and working on writing up the purpose/meaning of the piece (Aside from my jokes of doing what i want,and all. lol) i'm not sure if they want some sort of formal statement but i figured it won't hurt any to look somewhat professional...ish.

Latest pics: last work done about 20 minutes ago.Ripped off the arms i had, start them over tomorrow. Took off the ears to reshape and fire before adding, they kept flopping down too much.

Thinking i am not going to be able to finish this how i wanted to in time. i'll submit it as a finished sculpture but i dont think i'll get to have the drawing with it that i wanted. i think he will stand alone fine with his newly broken out of egg, thus fitting into a "newborn" category but it kind of loses..all..of what i originally wanted. bleh. why do i always find out about things much too late? lol
i'm still going to do the drawing either way because that is how i want it to go.
Maybe i'll stick up a decent black and white sketch if i can swing it.

Yes, it is TRUE. i finished something in TIME. for the FIRST TIME ever on this site. mwahahahhahaah! That in itself is like a win for me.No, seriously, it is. LOL

The first pic is what i submitted, since it is how i want it to be viewed as a piece.The rest are just other angles of it,since its 3D.
i have a mpg video i did with my horrible old digital camera, of it rotating so you can see the entire piece, but i can't upload it since its like 15.5 MB, and i dont know how to make it smaller.
Poor guys hands got burninated!!

i know that pretty much everyone has done some form of 2D art for this contest, but i choose not to mainly because i do sculpture,
and because of the question "what do you bring into the world? what will you create" in the post by Jason Manley. i thought about that for a bit.
What do i bring into the world? What do i create? and always, if i am being truly honest, the answer is "Whatever i want".
i figured i would not have many partners in the 3D area for this, but it wasn't something that i let hold me back from giving it a try anyway.
It's *my* art,and what i want to do, after all.
My piece is made of sculpey, and is of a dragon who has just hatched out of his egg.
In front of him is a sketchbook, which contains the original sketch of the piece that i wanted to sculpt for the contest.
What i was trying to portray was the idea that this newly hatched dragon is looking up at the moment of his creation,
and perhaps realizes that the quick little sketch on a piece of paper is what is responsible for his existence.
The reason i chose to do that is because most artists,myself included, get all these little bursts of ideas, tons and tons of them.
And that is all they are, until we go and turn them into some else we call art.Each of those bursts are like newborn art waiting to grown up into themselves
and be brought into the world. Hopefully that makes sense to someone else.

I love him, really liking the posture and broken egg of this piece.

Don't worry about the burn anything short of melty black is actually good.
That rich dark orange is sculpy at its strongest.
