Fascinating creature designs! I love all those little details. These all look so great. All your characters have such personality.
If you have the time, please stop by my sketchbook, Chock Full o'Nuts.
I would appreciate any advice or critiques.

Dude, your creatures are awesome! So detailed and full of life!

Are these all from your head or do you use some reference? Also, how exactly do you go about generating these ideas?

    Good work!

You can always tell something is good or it's art you like when it makes you want to draw really bad.

    This does that.
    Thanks for sharing.

How big are some of these done originally?

    Haha Hello my friend!

You are a very prolific pencil drawer. I've been watching these long time ago in BLOGSPOT. Your shading is very good and I won't mention the skills that imagination gives you... they are just a draw of clean air. Keep it up ! - g

    WOW...

Now I don't feel like I am working hard enough...hanging head while walking slowly back to the lab... Anyways great material and you have the vibe going!
Have to check out any other stuff you have here. I just now checked out your blog. Saw some creature concepts there and they were damn cool! Later and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Will_S. - yes these are all out of my twisted mind without reference. Now, I love collecting reference to study (internet, books, nature DVDs... whatever) and try to absorb as much as my puny brain will allow. Typically I don't have the reference handy when I sketch... it slows down the creative process for me. Just as long as I retain the memory of certain aspects of real world reference - this helps give some believable details to very unbelievable creations. How do I generate ideas? Mostly I begin drawing thumbnails or random shapes, not knowing what I'm going to create... I let the random pencil marks suggest forms to me and I 'discover' the drawing by gradually detailing and teasing the shapes into more solid forms. I'm often very suprised by what I come up with, LOL. I have a more structured system for generating ideas for concepts at work, but it involves the same basic principle of 'finding' interesting shapes that suggest forms to me - like finding shapes in the clouds.

Blitz - thanks for the kind comments. Most of these sketches are done on standard 8.5 x 11 inch 'letter' size paper (acid free, of course)... because that's what I have handy laying around my apartment, LOL. A few of these sketches are only 2 or 3 inches tall - others fill the dimensions of the entire page. I used to work bigger (back in art college) but since I scan my drawings, the paper size has to fit into the thing. If I paint the image in Photoshop, then size is less relevent I find.

    Incredible stuff!
The third one down reminds me of a centipede. I f#$%*ing hate centipedes. That said, #'s 3 and 7 are my favorites. I love the perspective on the last couple. Very, very well done.

Thx szaionz... yeah, I HATE centipedes and shit like that also which is probably what inspired me to draw that. I like it when some of my drawings disturb me - evokes some kind of reaction... then it's closer to art, I think. OR it's just gross, LOL.

Thanks for the kind words Treefrog... the more detailed monster drawings usually take a couple hours (some even 3 or 4). Most of my sketches I do in one sitting which is anywhere from 5 minutes to a hour depending on size and detail. Honestly, I usually loose track of time when I'm sketching. I get caught up in the 'zen' of art and everything else kinda just fades away.

did this for a buddy at work - he wanted an alien type of creature to model for his personal portfolio... so I was only too happy to draw more creatures, LOL.
