    JoshB's Sketchbook.

    Hello Everyone,

Alright so I'm one of those people who have been around the site for a while and decided it would probably be best to get some suggestions/feedback/critique from other people. Kind of not so hot at drawing yet. My goal right now is just to be able to draw from my imagination and I'm not entirely sure how to make that leap. So any comments/suggestions on what I should practice are very much appreciated. I draw everyday and I will post whatever I draw, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

So this is what I drew today.Stopped on this one cause the proportions are off and I got kind of annoyed with it. I'm gonna try again tomorrow or something similar maybe.

Nice to see some studies. Keep them coming but also try to work on personal stuff, so we see what kind of an artist you are and where you are going, also if they aren't perfect at the beginning.

    Cheers

Janos: Thanks for the input. Very much appreciated. When you say something more personal, do you mean to work from my imagination?

Alright so I didn't post yesterday cause I drew on an 18x24 piece of paper with pencil and I couldn't get the drawings to show up on my camera. I realize some of today's posts might just look like scribbles (gestures and such) but its what I drew soooo yeah.

These are pretty much me just trying to figure out a good way to start out drawing the figure.

Also I'm still trying to figure out how to make the scans not so faded. I guess I'll just have to make darker lines or something.

Nice start to your SB, if you load the image into photoshop you will be able to make the lines darker, just as simple as playing around with the levels ctrl+L I believe, hope this helps

The man with no name: Hey man thanks for the help it worked out great.

Today I tried to draw from my imagination (except for the two faces) more but it doesn't look too pretty but w/e I gotta start somewhere. Any suggestions/comments/critiques are very much appreciated. I'm always kind of at a loss of what I should draw.

The scribbles are gestures. Not sure if they are obvious what they are when you don't already know so I figured I should say. I've decided that everyday I need to draw from my imagination to get better at it. I know it's painful on the eyes for the time being but bear with me.

Trying to figure out the skull and all that. Can't quite figure out how to ensure the correct proportions on the head.

Alright so I'm trying to figure out how to use this ball and plane method of building the face but I am finding its kind of a pain. Every time I make a face with it the facial features don't really line up like they should. But I suppose more practice will fix that. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to mention them.

Once again more skulls and a portrait. Think I'm gonna move onto face muscles soon and then come back to skulls once I get a model.

The heads are looking pretty good, I like how you do the planes on the drawing out of your imagination.

On the drawings from the 13th, that guy with the round belly. It may be very big and round, but gravity still works on it, so it doesn't stick out like half a ballon, it sags a bit downwards instead.

The gestures look nice and loose, too.

Kjesta: Thanks for your input. Yeah I agree about the guy with the belly. Sometimes when I draw from my imagination I refuse to let myself look at reference and I didn't really know how to handle a sag so I drew it like that. Probably should have just looked at a picture of some overweight person to help me figure it out. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. Nice to know people are actually looking in at my SB, I was starting to wonder there for a while.

Today more the same. And I don't know why you can see through the paper so well today.

Yeah, drawing from imagination is good and I try not to use too much reference when I do it so I stay a bit loose, but if I know something's wrong and I don't know how to get it right, I just get myself some reference. No shame in that

And I totally know how you're feeling - my SB is still kinda quiet, too. But I'll just keep working on it until someday people will be like, "WOW! how did I miss all this amazing art all that time?" And even if I get only one comment a page, that's still input I wouldn't have gotten without the SB, so it's worth it. Let's just be positive!

The skull studies are looking real nice, especially the one on the right, I like the lines on that one very much. With the feet, try to remember that when the feet are flat on the ground, they're er flat on the bottom, so you don't see the curve of the palms as well. (I don't know what that's called, but it's like your palm, just on your feet... Oh dear... English sucks with me today.)

ImaGEEnation: Thanks for the positive feedback. I'll finish something entirely soon, it would probably be a good idea.

Kjesta: Once again thanks for the input. I'll keep that in mind when I'm drawing feet. It was the first time I had ever really tried to draw them from my mind. And yes, I agree, one day we will rule this website!

Today just more faces. The two with the brown markings on them were me trying to draw them from memory and the brown marks are corrections. And just in case it isn't obvious, those are the muscles of the face.
