    Carbon Sketchbook - *Nudity*

    New stuff further down

Hey, I'm 18, starting art college in about a months time and my goal is to greatly improve portraits and figure drawing

I signed up for a mentoring thread, which gave me a proper kick in the ass so I'll start with the stuff we did.

    These are all from photos.

Great work on the photo reference pieces, they all look great but the one with the mouth looks rather odd but supposing it should look that way forget it. Keep up the good work.

Icedearth15876 - thank you Tbh I kinda got sick of doing the mouth as it wasn't coming together the way I wanted it to. Learned a lesson the hard way lol

Will try and update this daily.

Couple of portraits done for the mentoring thread. From imagination using a couple of refs. It's a start at least but I've got a loong way to go yet.

    Cheers.

Bear with me, my brain completely died today and not a lot of things were making sense.

Quick sketch of Alice Cooper. Learned a lot from this, never realised how much character can be conveyed just by simple little expressions.

    hey there

the first skull looks really cool the last one, imho, is a lilttle too busy from a value point of view. the gray values are scattered all over the place. i noticed this because i m also struggling to keep these things organized.

i found a great read on this issue, andrew loomis - creative illustration. i found out many useful things about organizing values in here. The theory i understand, the practice is a killer

Ahh thoughts so Lily Cheers Hayden. Yeah went a little bit overboard with the values, way too many with way to small a brush

Did some torso studies, things are starting to click with balance.

PS - watched Pan's Labyrinth again. It is soo beautiful. Just thought I'd mention that

Funny how ideas pop into your head at the oddest moments.

Tried working with a colour scheme.

Choose to do a Triadic one. Think I understood it - going by a colour wheel in Painter X, red, green and blue are spaced equally around the wheel so that would be one scheme right? So yellow, light blue and pink would be another. Or am I totally in the wrong direction?

Pan's Labyrinth is really a great movie, I watched it like 4 time: one for myself and the other 3 were with friends i wanted to to show it to them.

The left (from the viewer) torso is really pretty. Have you worked from a photo? Can you please explain me how you worked with the brushes and texture?

Hayden - Thank you for the link. Will read it when I have more time to absorb it, too much stuff swimming about me head right now.

Lily - Haha, yeah my friends watched it too, they love it. I used conte brushes in Painter X, on a fairley low opacity, 80% or so? Can't quite remember. They have awesome textures on their own. Yes it was from a photo, the model was beautiful. The one on the left that you mentioned was focusing on light, the next one was focusing on shadow and the last was a very quick overall form. Thats about it really.

Kcekelkai - wow thats a hard name to spell Thank you! I have been doing many pencil sketches but unfortunatly I have no scanner and my camera isnt very good quality as Tipa can tell you. Been trying to emulate the sketchy style with Painter but it feels very strange.

More skulls, some skeletons and a stab at enviroments.

Started Art College yay! Figure drawing lecturer is cool but scary - you don't want to make him angry lol.

Anyways, been missing France so gonna do a series of paintings of Paris

Thanks Hayden. If you ever get a chance to visit Paris then go for it. Seeing the Sacre Couer, Notre Dame and the Jardin des Tuileries in person is 100 times better than any photograph.

I got a new scanner so here are some Loomis studies. Done with a fineliner. Feeling a little more confident with it now.

    Thank you Kyurai and Rodriguez

Another small batch of drawings. The portrait was once again from ref (looks better in real life) and the dodgy Sacre Couer sketch was inspired by IdiotApathy's sketches. Lost some values on the portrait as I haven't figured out the scanner settings yet.

Arite my fellow Scotsman. haha. Thanks for the comment on my sketchbook.
The second skull in one of your previous posts looks great. Whatever you did there seemed to work. You should try it again.
A big thing which can be improved with your sketches is the lines you decide to put down. Some things can be described by shapes which are nothing like what you would imagine, this is especially true with lips and eyes (in my opinion). Right now you seem to be drawing the outline, but have a look at some people you look up to, and I can almost guarantee that they draw things which seem weird, but it works. It is all about what you need to put down to describe what you are drawing.
Keep up with the updates and drawing though. I am looking forward to them.
