My advice is to try and find a good reference of a bird's skull before you take this much farther. The skull can really make or break this piece. It's really looking good at this early stage, though.

Soupandbutter, a very original Phoenix interpretation and a solid painting. Maybe you could cut the canvas on the left and right side a bit. The rectangular shape is desturbing the composition..
    good luck

Man, that phoenix hatchling is awesome. I love how he's not reborn instantly in all his glory, and I love the skull/egg. The turquoise b/g isn't working for me yet, and I think the lighting on the skull needs some refinement to its organization (you're probably working on both those things anyway, but just in case you aren't, thought I'd throw my two cents in in case it's useful.)

master.mind - Thanks, i Think cutting the canvas worked out well. (More?)

Jason C-M - Thanks for the help. how is it now?

R a n d i s - Thanks, I keep an eye on some bird references, but I'm trying not follow them too strictly. It is a mythical creature after all.

kimliatach - Cool, Great minds think alike as they say :b

    ninjacat11 - Thanks.

The bottom right is a bit of a mess right now and the mothers talon will either go in the front or back, but not both.

    Keep the feedback coming

the color is working better for me, but I'm sorry to say I find the stars too stylized and children's book-ish.

love the concept and the fire effects on the feathers etc this is definitely one of my favorites in the competition.

Just a thought, what about if the night sky were blackened with hints of grey/brown (like when you look up after a bonfire) diffusing the clear night sky?

    Best of luck.
