Samurai Painting

Hope this one works, I'll post it.
Done quickly in Painter 8. Various brushes used. Will elaborate on process if anyone's interested.
Still working on my Painter Skills. Caravaggio is what I want my digital paintings to look like.
I like (in no particular order) Don Seegmiller, Ron Lemen, Brian Haberlin, Laura Depuy, Justin Sweet, Jason Manley, Feng Zhu, Craig Mullins, Khang Le, Ryan Church, Doug Wheatley, Cary Nord, Kaare Andrews, Gerald Garcia, Jeff Watts, Jon Foster, Arnold Tsang, Andrew Jones, Doug Chiang, Stefan Martinere, the artists that post on the boards. big inspiration aswell, (Shawn, Sammy, forgive me for not mentioning more names, I love seeing everyone's work!!! Thanks to all for sharing (the list will be endless if I keep going) and various other artists and their approaches when it comes to painting digitally and of course, with the brush and pigments ( Ingres, Frazetta, Vallejo, Bell, Rembrandt, Renoir, Degas. the list is long)

Well its alright, but I think it would have looked better with the type of pants that are really baggy BUT fold in at the knee into a long sock (or wrapping around the foot). These pants just make him look like some sort of skater. If you were trying to draw the 'hakama'...



...you should have had 5 cleats in the front and two side slits (right and left). Also, samurai would never wear their katanas on their back, so maybe a more appropriate name for this would be 'Ninja Painting' Anyways other than that the painting is pretty good, oh, except for that right arm of his, it looks a bit flat. Try to imagine it as a 3d object and as circular as you can make it (thickness-wise)

well those pants are like kendo pants looks like.. but with smaller leg holes.. usually kendo pants are massive. of something of a freak would wear... or a kendo fighter dude

edit: eh nevermind hakama pants was what i was talkin about too but the ppicture of the blue pants look weird.. this is prolly the same thing

Hello,

Um, I'm not meaning to be pedantic. Especially with my first ever post on conceptart.org and all. But, theres actually six pleats on the front of Hakama and another one on the back, on each leg. They represent the seven 'parts' of bushido, Honour, Duty, etc. I just thought it would be helpfull for future artists.

The Hakama were actually invented as riding pants, much like leather chaps used by cowboys. However, the Japanese were at the time buddhist and so didn't have much leather, they used instead a lot of layers cotton. this eventually was formalised into the Hakama.

P.S. this is a great site that I've visited on and off for about a year now and I've always been very impressed by it. Unfortunately, I'm not possessed of any real artistic talent, unless a very good imagination counts. So I tend to just admire the artwork done by the people here. Great site, keep up the good work.

Nice work. The face and color scheme looks like Marc Sylvestri's character "RiPClAw", but other then that your painting skills are off to a great start.

Yeah, you could say I have a fairly heavy interest in all things Fuedal Japan. Plus martial arts and things of that kind.
