    Saab 9-5 Project & More [update on p. 3 - July 02 2011!]

Over the past half a year I enrolled in the Automotive Design course at my faculty, and I figured I'd put some of the stuff I did up here. Last wednesday we had a poster presentation of the results -basically, we had to put up the posters and then leave the room so they could be judged - and my final mark was an 8 out of 10 so I'm pleased with the results.

Below is the final poster that explains most of the concept, and below that is a bunch of the process shots I saved while working.

The first part of the project consisted of a break-down of the current car and brand, and coming up with a vision for the future (globally as well as brand related). Although it might not seem like much, this was actually one of the hardest part of the project because there are tons of factors that influence the outcome, which is just a single metaphor. A metaphor that is only slightly off could lead to a whole different outcome of the whole project, so it's kind of crucial to get it right.

The next step in the process was to create a concept for the year 2024, based on the vision above.

The 2024 concept is deliberately a bit over-the-top, as it is used to inspire a much more toned down and near-future version for the year 2014. This way, instead of conservatively building upon what already exists this 2014 concept can be reversed-engineered from the future, which should give a much more original design.

Since the 2014 concept of the Saab 9-5 was the main goal of this project, we had more time in the schedule for it. Instead of just relying on sketches and renders, we were required to make a proper package drawing in a 3D CAD program too, so we could make sure the proper amount of people fitted in there along with the engine and other attributes without sticking out at weird spots. The package drawing was also used to base the final renders on.

Anyway, comments and critiques are always welcome. I might invest a little more time in it for portfolio purposes, especially the interior could use some more work I think.

superb work, fresh forms and slick design overall!
only one crit i have, that as i know the saab design is more towards to the airplanes, aircrafts... so maybe to add into the design some more hard lines, less curves... more agressive look.

you wrote "a concept car for year 2014", but you meant to write 2024.

Thanks for the comments all, much appreciated I enjoyed doing this project, so I might do something similar for myself one of these days. We'll see

teho: Saab used to build aircrafts indeed (that part of the company has split off though, and is now a seperate company under the same name), but this is taken on board in the deconstruction and vision forming at the beginning of the project (the left side of the poster). Saab's have never looked really agressive either, they seek it more in aerodynamics and powerful engines rather than agressive lines.

Pavel Sokov: Nope the final concept is one for 2014. We needed to create a 2024 version too, but that was only to inspire a more moderate version for the near future, which was the end goal of the project. Admittedly, the poster doesn't read too well if you're not known with the course in that way, so thanks for pointing it out

That perspective shot from the passenger side is something I've been looking at the past couple days. Everything you did for the project is great, but those two shots take the cake for me. As a draftsman, it's a nice surprise to see the words "CAD" mentioned in these forums, heh! Impressive work indeed!

very sleek. allot of glass but something as futuristic as this will most likely pass that far into the future... but its not like this car will actually be made... just saying i love glass. The interior design is defiantly the most awesome part of your design, due to the lack in defined shape of the exterior. To round needs more edge. Just my opinion... i love sharper cars ha ha. all over awesome though amazing job.

    Thumbs up

Nice Concepts, wicked Presentation Value, but the juicy part of them all is the thumbnails!

    Sony: Thanks

ScaryPotato: Yeh spend a little extra time on those shots since they had to be the eye-catchers for this project. About the CAD, I guess that's because of my ID background Used Solidworks for it since I'm most at home with that program.

Jeremy Swan: Thanks, yeh the interior could've used another pass, but i ran out of time. Might work a bit more on it for portfolio purposes.

    MrSmith, koro: Thanks!

Wow, first time I've seen car design in CA. I liked the concept and the design of the car, it's very smooth and clean.
