Arc's Sketchbok: Time to get serious...

Hi everyone. I've recently come to the realization that I am a lazy turd and am no where even remotely close to the level I had hoped to be at by my age (19.) I plan on updating this daily with studies and maybe some WIPs. Please kick my ass.

    From the past few days:

Two speedpaints from photographs... I dunno if they count as speedpaints cause I spent about an hour on each, but speed is something I'm trying to work on as well as environments.

Another from my head... this one took me around 3 hours and I'm really embarrassed to say that.

If you're 19 and this is no where close to where you're "supposed" to be, then I must be stuck somewhere in middle school because we're the same age and this stuff is considerably better than mine. I'd recommend focusing less on how "old" you are (we both have a lot of time ahead of us) and just focus on the art. This stuff is good. For no reference, that elf chick is awesome. Keep going!

Thanks Derek. I guess I just have very high standards for myself. I'm a rising sophomore at MICA and some of my fellow illustration majors are freaking incredible. I really want to push myself. =)

I know how you feel. I took a figure drawing class for the first time last semester and felt very foolish the first few weeks. It's good that you want to push yourself. I'll be watching you.

So the daily update thing isn't really working out for me. I'm still drawing every day, just not scanning/uploading daily. Anyways here's some stuff.

Your figures seem to get smaller as the body gets lower. Try to keep the hips in proportiontion to the torso. For the dunes piece, remember that as objects get further away in space, they appear softer, lower in contrast, and lower in saturation (which is called atmospheric perspective). I think your portraits are your strength right now. Keep posting!

Thanks so much for the pointers! I was trying to figure out why the sand dunes piece looked so flat! I think I'll do some gesture studies tomorrow to work on the proportion thing you mentioned.
