Haha I know how you feel about taking a hiatus and then trying to learn to sketch or use photoshop or whatever and getting back into some type of routine. This one in particular is very appealing to me, because of the minimal strokes used to convey the portrait, very nice job!!! I'm intrigued to hear more about the german shepard or animal kick you got going on now?

As far as animal studies go, I'm not 100 percent positive. There are probably books on drawing animals and whatnot...going to the zoo to do animal sketches like we did on a trip is also a good idea.

ok ok i'll do a small update. I have paper studies but I don't feel like scanning them. I hope everyone that is celebrating a holiday had a good one!!

any help with the nose and mouth/head structure would be awesome please.
and paint sketch for later piece i hope to do eventually.... but i keep f* up the structure. all i want is a down turned face, at 3/4 angle
not hard right? but i keep mucking that crap up.

and been doing nose mouth and perspective studies on paper but like i said.
im too lazy to scan them. they are practice for myself anyway.

and i know
there is no brush economy.

haha awesome, dig the first portrait, she either trying hard to seduce a man or she stoned off the bomb diggity! I think brush economy just comes instinctly more so than actually trying to do it, i think you'd have a nightmare if you seen how many strokes i lay down before coming to an idea =O, that is a tough profile to capture, i'd say to just throw out what u know or trying to reason things out with forms and just played around with positioning with very rough shapes, no render whatsoever, and if you look at a picture with the angle you're looking for and compare it to what you've drawn you'll see where your conceptions of where anatomy is located on the face and where it actually lies in real life

As for nose, i'm stumped on that one too, it's soooo very subtle and really an art form in itself to master i think, as well as the lips. Let me know if any revelations!

very nice improvement hala since i last visited. For learning skin tones i suggest you try doing studies from other artists even people on CA. I personally find it allot more helpful then working from photos since not only can you figure out what colors work but you can also find out how to effectively apply them. Anyway, glad too see your still at it and im looking forward to seeing your progress

i agree with kato, but i think it's good approach you're taking right now even in that last post, where it's monochromatic; nothing is easier on the eye than to work monochromatically and even though it's a bit stylized i think it reads well and as they say if it works in greyscale or mono then it reads! keep at it, you're eye is definitely coming into it's own!!

some ref studies from this morning

finally made some connections in my head. so i'm pretty happy. i just wanted to understand shapes better and the way that I want to draw them.
i also went back to some of my first influences for inspiration and technique.
felt natural, felt good. and i didn't get frustrated.
