after feeling burnt out, trying to break back into things.
Gonna try to do a sargent study daily now.
so here is a study of his "gust of wind". I wasn't going for a total copy, more just observing his blocking methods and the way he uses edge in the initial stages of his work.
conclusions:
-my edge quality sucks. need to focus more on that.
-i had extreme ADD when it comes to blocking in, i need to slow down my hand and focus on the shapes.
and a shitty SP.20 min cuz i'm still burnt out, but I'm gonna do a ton of loomis studies, and start enviros this week!!!
this post feels anticlimactic.

hey hala, i don't think u should feel too down on urself about this latest sargent study, I think the mood and composition came out great! I really get a sense of what the piece was depicting in ur sketch. Sometimes it's tgood to step away from the canvas, take a break and absorb what you've done up to this point so no harm in it!
it also helps to work with a small thumbnail size of the canvas at times because u can see the whole composition so that may help in the block in of values when u do protraits, if it read from afar then will be pretty good for detailing up close
keep at it hala, your work is definitely coming along great especially anatomy construction!!

Nice stuff! Don't be too down on yourself, just use that as motivation! I think your main problem is just your strokes and following the form. In large areas like the side of the face don't be afraid to use a big brush and just lay a few giant strokes going along that surface. Most of the time a few nice big strokes end up looking nicer than a bunch of smaller strokes...plus there's less room for error since you're covering so much of a large area at once. Save the smaller strokes for details and blending![]()
I really like how it is going, and the onion is really smexy..
Maybe you use too many strokes, and that's what adds this line/stroke/edge nervousness.
I've red always that you have to use as less strokes as possible (kind of) and the biggest brush you can for the job.
Have you seen this tutorial? http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm

The Spaniard's Sketchbook... No holds barred
You're doing such great work here. I love the non-reffed image at the bottom right-hand corner here. The onion is fantastic, too...if you ever feel like revisiting it, there are a couple of things that are holding it back (slightly)...I think lightening the shadow (esp. on the edges) would help, and right now the light source is a bit confusing. It looks like the light is coming from in front of it, but the shadow indicates that the light is behind it. Then, if you want to be nit-picky, perhaps consider losing some of the edges and detailing on the white end of it (so the eye isn't drawn off the page--you could also use a subtle blur for this) and possibly tilt the whole thing so it's at a slight angle (to make the composition a bit less static and again help with the eye being led off the page). The detailing on the bulb is phenomenal! I really like the latest Sargent study...you did a great job with the colors.
Hey everyone, thank you so much for the comments and crits--they are really helpful and I am trying very hard to implement everything you say!!And thank you courtyard for the critique on the onion!
Thanks for the link quikenobi!
and thanks snootchy and jackpot for your guidance on livestream and CA!

a strawberry still life from live stream --

many things wrong with it--though i guess i accomplished some things i haven't in the past. i really need to work on leaves. they look so fake here.
and some OC with snootchy
lacking some motivation, so I think it's time to set some new goals to get the fire going again, and this time not burn out : )
Hurrah it's like a new year!!!!![]()

Mmmmm love the strawberriesI actually think it shows some improvement in your painting. I'd just watch the edges. Do you use the eraser to erase the edges? I don't know if you do, but if you do you should use the background color to paint over the edges instead. The eraser tends to make your edges look too hard and unnatural. Cool OC stuff
Keep it up!
Those strawberries look really juicywonderful
and your edges look much better here

You have seriously progressed. Lookin' good for sure! The second piece in #184 almost reminds me of a J.S. Sargent.

Hey guys, burnt out from my job today (FKN HELL. NOT worth the money. even my office jobs were better than this).
No time to respond to comments, but thank you all for you crits and help!! They mean a lot to me!!!!
Finally got out of my slump by doing things that I wanted to paint, without a care for technique or perfection.
most of it was too erotic for CA though so here is just a simple piece i made for my love. Something soft and intimate.
I work again tomorrow, but then I'm free to make some art!
and damn I really gotta pick up the pace again.

um this is just freakin awesome, and the brush strokes are a real treat to look at! I think you should definitely do more of these balanced with your studies so that you don't lose sight of the emotional side over doing technical studies!
Bummer but hey it's dollah dollah bills y'all! make the world go round or at least keep paint on the end of our brushes, hehe!!! Gluck with work tomorrow!

Currently working on my loomis studies
got past the art block
fk yea
haven't finished my studies yet. so i will post them tomorrow and FINALLY feel motivated again.
enjoy these gestures.
done with the intent to express what it feels like when a woman feels sexy. some symbolism thrown in there too. some obvious. some not. i think not only is the body beautiful, but the feeling of sexual confidence is as well.
this is playing more to the emotional side of things rather than eye candy.
back to work--sorry for the really lame updates lately. Finished my temp job so I can work harder on drawing again.

Love the care-free approach of the two lovers. It's a good foundation you've laid down. Keep that piece around, you might want to revisit it later on when your skills have improved even more.

Some nice gals up there, great flow and energy! Really nice job on the Master study as well, colours and form look pretty good!
And send me a PM or something whenever you go on livestream, I miss ya smexy voice
Take care Hala,
matt
this is just outright beautiful thing to look at, so many nice simple lines to indicate volume and analogous colors working well with one another to convey mood! I'm liking this expressive hala mucho lots mang!!
you may think that the self port looks shitty but to me that looks like a great block in or more opaque work that can be refined to get resemblance and forms right, I think you should really try and push that self port cuz i can see that one turning out really nice if you approached like your strawberry life study! I think it's personal pref but i really like the rough raw block-ins, there's something really fundamental and a stepping stone type of approach that has so much potential for growth, and this is what i see in that self port of yours!!
keep pushing, only a few more weeks or days till u go back to school and tell them to suuck on that suckah, keke!!!

hah wow , its good to see your trying so many Differnt things! just dont think photoshop textures a fast fix -- or better yet make your own XD not that i ever use the damn things ... probly should
wow, I see some fast expressive drawings here. They are really nice. sometime fast paintings transfer the feelings more efficiently than a finished complete artwork.
craig mullins is a pro in this field. U can receive some inspirations from his works![]()
Nice studies! I dunno if you know this site already but you should check it out for some references.
