Cow Im 15 and I am wondering if it is normal to see what I am about to draw before i draw

Im def. not an artist. Although i CAN draw better than most. But does anyone know why when i am drawing i can just lift the pen up and see shapes (Ears; Tires; Hats; Etc.) on the picture that i am drawing? Its pretty hard to explain. Also, when I plan on drawing, i can just look at a blank sheet of paper and see pictures on the paper and then I decide to draw them. any time i get bored i will see it and just start drawing, but the only problem with that is like number 1, I start drawing the picture and its just like i had just seen it, but then the shapes start changing and it SOMETIME comes out different than what i originally see but they usually always come out as a good picture. Im saying im not like psychic or anything just curious if this is normal or if it some kind of talent.

No, this is totally normal for most artists. Visualizing what you want to draw is a key step in fleshing out composition and getting yourself "excited" about the picture you're about to create.

It *is* a talent though. Just because you're not psychic (unfortunately), doesn't mean you don't have a talent for visualizing your pictures in more detail than most people.

If your eyes turn white and you go into a trance and start painting things from the future (Matt Parkman/ Heroes style), then you can start considering the possibility that you're psychic. ;P
'Cuz life is full of your regrets, and I should be one...

If you mean that you can project an image on paper, that is as clear or clearer than an after image, then it is not normal. The name for it is eidetic imagery. A normal artist can imagine pictures in their mind, but the mental image doesn't get mixed up with the real image of the paper.

No see, I can look at a blank sheet of paper and see a picture in somewhat good detail. So if i am bored I will draw what i see, i can also look at a picture and draw it (Not good at drawing human faces and stuff) and I do pretty good, and people think i trace it (which is aggervating) but sometimes i will see the picture and start drawing it then i see the picture change up some.

Yeah, I would like to see it too

There's something I have been working on that's similar to what you're doing. Basically, it's seeing what you want in your mind's eye, and then opening your eyes and being able to hold that image with you. It can go even deeper than that, where you can see actions and movement with your real eyes, that come directly from your mind.

I'm still not very good at it, but it's something I'm really interested in achieving. It sounds like to me that you already have a part of it.

To answer your question, yeah, I consider it a talent.

Shit, really? On Grief's behalf, I apologize for a misunderstanding like this.

Prove that you can use your mind's eye as a projector of sorts. If you 'have trouble with faces' or whatever you said, earlier, then I doubt you've got a talent like the one you mentioned.

It's not normal at all. You are a special and unique snowflake. Congratulations.

The line tool and paint bucket is not really drawing. Or even doodling. It is clicking.

Ahem i would guess Phil meant to say that art classes are no prerequisite to being awesome.

And no those arent the greatest in the world and no given that you're 15 they arent horrible at all but so what?
The question is are you willing to try your best to make better than "not horrible", no matter your age, your artistic education or lack of? If yes then stick around CA, read all the good infos provided here, seek those which arent and actually realise how clueless you were and still are about art. Then, hopefully, by your 16th b-day you'll be more aware of the higher benefit of painstaking work over reliance on alleged artsy superpowers.

    And dont get defensive

Seeing what you are drawing in your minds eye is not atypical. I believe it is called visualizing. There is a Youtube video (can't find it ATM to link) of two artist at a comic con or the like who doing a drawing one does Hawkman the other Spiderman. The guy who draws spiderman talks about it a bit stating that he can't visualize so he draws the construction lines first, the guy who draws Hawkman does not use any construction lines.

Point being it is a nice thing to be able to do not necessary. What is necessary is study nad practice. If you want to be good add hour of practice and a lot of study to refine those images in your head.

Yes, indeed, we should ALL study nad practice.

But seriously, what he said is truth. I know people are going beyond the question you originally asked, but it's for good reason.

I dunno if you want to make a career out of art, or just for personal reasons, but if you want to really improve, study from real life and practice your ass off.

Or, if you just want to explore your "psychic" skill, that's good too.

    Just have fun

I was reading this thread....and suddenly I got lost.

    What is it all about?

Somewhere, while I was reading I think saw some colourful....things.

    Well...I don't know.....I don't know.

    P.S.

From time to time I get the impression that access to psychiatric care in some places is seriously limited.

Mwahaha. I bumped the thread of the... MS paint challenged person.

I actually would like to have that ability. To project hallucinations on paper then trace over them. When I'm very tired, I sometimes start dreaming before I fall asleep, I see dark faint images running like a film, but I have to have my eyes closed to see the images.
