I have found a portrait of a good friend of mine, which I did some time ago ...
Just wanted to show you so here we go

It doesn't look like me at all ... so it should be failed ^^
but somehow I quite like it ... first try with toned paper

Yeah it's hard to get the likeness right with self-portraits, but it's more important that you get the general form and value right so don't consider it a failure just because it doesn't look like you ^^ Anyway, great studies dude. I love the first page and all the loomis studies and head studies. Try to stay in the habit of doing studies of that nature between your imaginative work. If you keep going back to those studies over time, you'll be able to extract more and more information to improve your drawings from imagination. Keep up the good work!

For the big selfportrait you made watch out for the construction of the skull..
Likeness will come in time,, just keep doing them and then BAM! .. its like looking into a mirror! And its also quite normal to stylize yourself a little when you are doing a selfportrait.. You mind tends to do that

Anyway! Keep up the good work!

Hey, good start. Loomis is a great place to learn but you shouldn't just copy his stuff but come up with own poses and so using his ideas. I think your efforts will pay off, keep on drawing

TedNindo Thanks for the tip. I recognised that I always copied ... but I felt more "secure" like this ... I'll try to do both, studies from loomis but also own poses from now. With heads I have tried some yet ... must do more

I am kinda happy: After that head the next ~10 will all be carravagio studies

Some stuff and I tried too draw a still life with a champagne bottle ... but it looks like a bottle full of iron ... so many reflections but no "transparency" ...

Totally love your progress, your studies are much more fluid and dynamic, loving that. I'm also loving how you're not drawing 'pretty' people that are perfectly shaped Drawing people you see is a good way to learn, so props for doing that. Keep up the great work!

some fun with earliest frankentsteins monster concept I started ^^

But the pencil always smears over .... and the lines vanish oder look bad -.- ......
Do you have a good tip what to do against that? In other sketchbooks that stuff looks sooooo great .... I don't know what I can do

Worked about 2 hours more on that family piece (men I am slow!).

Worked primarily on the women at the right and on the plate at the bottom.
Darkened the wall a bit (bottom) to draw the attention more to the center of the pic (the family) I hope. Must highlight the very center in the very end I guess.


Next time I'll flip the canvas and try to fix all that mistakes I spotted when I checked the flipped image today ... it didn't look good -.- The original side I work on looks much better aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh ^^

Argh ....

Now that I am looking at the family pic here on my laptop I realise that in some areas the colors look soooo ugly.... The dog looks black and blue "dotted". On my desktop pc where I paint it looked much better ....

Is there any possibility to get the "right" colors? Does anyone know what I mean and has a tip how to work against that problem?


Thanks for your help! Cause it really annoys me... in other threads everything looks great as well on the lappy as on the desktop ... but my work differs soooo much -.-

For getting the color right, try studying some master artists who used a similar color scheme, such as Rembrandt.

This family study is a master copy, but the problem isn't that I cannot get the colors right but that it looks different on my desktop and on my laptop...
On my desktop pc were I work I would say that the colors are "right" (perhaps not perfect but quite cool I think ... But on the laptop it looks completely different ....

And that's not good .... does anyone know where this effect comes from or what I could do?

Sorry, this post again without something to show (I am not at home atm)
But this problem here really bothers me ......

The only way to help is to calibrate your monitor. You can use this free tool to help you adjust your brightness and contrast (and I think there are other free tools and software out there that you can use; I haven't really looked), or you can buy a piece of hardware that will calibrate your monitor for you (like this one here). Here is an article that talks about different ways of calibrating your monitor.

dierat Thanks for the tip. But perhaps it isn't too bad to have so different monitors, because I might see problem zones, which I wouldnt have seen on my "painting monitor"
