Wait, did you create work and he did not pay you? Because it makes it sound like he just would not tell you if he had a company name, before you had a chance to do anything.

Was this a job offer found on this site? If so, from which thread? If not, and this is just a general warning, well the world is full of too many bad job offers to just start making threads on the internet about it.

There's no need to make more than one thread about this either. I deleted the one in the small freelance forum.

Thanks PsiBug, I deleted one of those, and merged the other into this thread. there really only needs to be one thread. If there needs to be one at all, I'm still not sure this was a job that originated on CA.

That's funny. The UAE is notorious for scamming workers into slavery. Imagine a game studio fueled by slave labor. There would be cheat codes like "please call the embassy". Maybe it's a conspiracy to have talented artist turn tricks for Haliburton in the UAE.

Can you provide a bit more info on what happened, especially if he posted the job on CA? Might be helpful should the offender changes email or uses a fake name; people can compare M.O.s

Thanks, because in these days and time people need retribution for their hard work and abilities. We do not need discouraging and demeaning leads to nowhere.

I have actually had a couple job offers dissolve after I mention payment for hi res files.

They were both on craigslist and wanted illustrations for "indie films" and when they describe the projects, it's more like the description of a pyramid schemes.

Wow I have to say this is really awesome to see artists speak out against this type of thing. So many artists are afraid to talk about bad employers because they think people won't listen or care.

Duke I almost worked with a few people from Craigslist, when I mention contracts and half the payment upfront. They disappeared which to me is a good thing.

Bad job offers are apart of this industry like it or not. There will always be pricks out to scam you for free art. After a while you will be able to tell if a job offer is legit or not. First step is to ask about payment. Most of the time they wont respond if its a scam. If they ask for samples give them a link to an online gallery. NEVER do art for someone who says they will pay you later. If they want art ask for 50% up front or at the most do a simple sketch with your copyright over it.
I have only recently returned to illustration after a few years off and already I have had an offer from someone claiming to be from a publishing house that has branches all over the world. I asked about payment and never heard back from them. Also I have been offered work for an E-zine promissing exposure for my work as payment. Thats not acceptable. For starters who really reads these things? Plus it was for the first issue so they had no idea if anyone would subscribe. Exposure on the web is easy for artists. There are thousands of sites such as this one that you can show case your work. More people will browse online galleries than will subscribe to e-zines. Most legit publishers will ask for a link to a gallery rather than emailed samples. Its easier for them to judge an artists work and their inboxes dont get full of crap.

So rant over. My point is that you should always ask about payment first and be careful. Theres a lot of bastards out there.

PS. This is the first post I have made here for about three years and I believe my last post was on the same subject. Some things never change
